The plots break down to either A) A coming out story B) A romantic comedy or C) something about a noble, suffering AIDS victim. Usually it's some amalgamation of the three.

Even if its much the same plot, it doesn't doom a movie. But the problem is "gay audience" isn't a demographic that makes for blockbusters, so the budgets are usually minuscule, and the filming/scripts/acting usually reflect that, so they end up looking just this side of a film student's project.

And I realize there are exceptions, and I know that the majority of movies are dreck, regardless of genre. But if you take the worst mainstream romantic comedies/coming of age movies and compare them to their gay equivalents, it's like an Orson Welles/Uwe Bolle faceoff.

I think the AIDs-centric films are necessary as the entire crisis among the gay community in the 80's and 90's seems to have simultaneously been ignored by the general public and completely left out of the history books. Of course you're right that it's unfortunate that those are the only kinds of films that are recognized and funded in gay cinema. Blue is the Warmest Color is currently on Netflix and while its sex scenes are pretty gratuitous and unnecessary, it's a pretty beautiful film about a relationship between two women.

Just watched the thriller Kristy and while it was a pretty run-of-the-mill, it definitely won me over with how well-shot and well-acted it was despite its budget. Also, speaking as someone who played a sport in college and had to stay on campus through almost every holiday for 4 years, it perfectly recreates that stark contrast of a college bustling with thousands of kids one day and emptied out and desolate the next. The buzzing of fluorescent lights in a basement laundry room. The way wind whistles differently through a parking lot when it doesn't have cars in it. The echo of a closing door hanging just a little bit longer than usual. The loneliness that creeps in when you're hit with the knowledge that you're the only soul in a building designed to accommodate hundreds. This was a hauntingly nostalgic film for me.

You find them in the back corners of Netflix along with talking cat movies.

Never mind. We might be thinking of two different things.

This is late but Ray Donovan is excellent.

In case you guys were wondering, the new Anjelah Johnson comedy special can safely be filed under 'catchphrase comedian.' I thought I'd give a comedienne I've never heard of a chance. She makes this weird 'ooh ooh' sound to punctuate every sentence for the first 10 minutes (where I turned it off), and I can also confirm she makes the same sound/punctuation in various podcast interviews in to support the release of this special in the past few weeks.

Anyone else check out Aziz Ansari's show Master of None? I just watched the first episode, it was ok, but I dunno if it was just early episode jitters but something about the acting is really off, like it's stuck between being too rehearsed and trying to seem naturalistic.

Finished it earlier. The acting gets better, and it finds a better balance in general, but overwritten bits pop up until the end. Enjoyed it, though

Yeah I ended up watching the rest of it, the first episode is kinda weak but it improves a lot. They actually do some interesting visual storytelling which a lot of comedy doesn't do these days, and it's consistently pretty funny. It's good, I recommend it.

I like boarding school and prison movies and Netflix has had a ton of them (NEDS is one of my favorite movies) on that I tend to rate with a lot of stars. So it started suggesting gay & lesbian drama as a favorite category, to me. It took months of going to netflix.com and clicking "not interested" on gay movies until it stopped throwing it up on the suggested list for my xbox. :\

Gay Cinema reminds me of Christian cinema in that it usually seems like artless crap manufactured as hastily as possible, to sell to a specific crowd that will buy it regardless of quality. If it's good enough it doesn't really need the tag "gay cinema" since straight people will watch it too.

To be fair, Tango & Cash features a scene where Kurt Russell sneaks out of a club by dressing as a woman, so the statement isn't totally unfounded. Tango & Cash rules.

Angel Heart has De Niro as the devil and it's fantastic.

That might be considered a spoiler but like in Devil's Advocate it's extremely obvious from the moment you see him that he is the actual literal devil.
