New Vegas represented Obsidian's attempt to argue that, in the modern age of gaming, they still know what Fallout is, or what's best for it. It's a statement that the West Coast of Fallout still matters, that there's still interesting threats to be had after Super Mutants and the Enclave are gone.

Unfortunately, it was made after a company that had just brought back from the pit of unacceptability/obscurity by a mainstream developer. And it worked. They made a Fallout better than its original developers could hope to do. The only reason Obsidian was allowed to make NV was because Bethesda did the heavy lifting of creating an acceptable Fallout 3. Obsidian tried that (iirc) and the result was Van Buren.

New Vegas, not 3 or 4, is a rejection of the soul of Fallout.

dog

It has all those things so I am set

I like like three of those things a TON, like they're practically my favorite things, but I also like to talk to people and make friends and it has wooden shithead garbage hell dialogue and I like to make decisions and I like to not have who my character supposedly is shoved down my throat

No, seriously, how can anyone objectively say that Fallout 3 is a better game and story than New Vegas.

Simple: Bethesda took a series abandoned/forgotten that I dug, and used their talents to make a better game out of it than the original ones. When the folks whose talents were responsible for the abandonment/forgetting made a game in the series after that, it was a step back.

Can't fathom it? The NV thread is dotted with posters shocked that their friend/brother/mom/boyfriend/etc told them they like 3 over New Vegas.

It was better than this game though.

Look at the Perk Poster. PER 04: Locksmith. You need Rank 3 to open Master locks. Requires level 18.

With how ridiculous adhesive costs are I'm starting to think all weapon/armor mods are just strapping something to the weapon/armor and then wrapping an entire roll of duct tape around it. And then another one to be safe. Maybe keep a spare roll inside the gun as a backup.

It is neither the first nor the last thing Fallout reused. There's arguments to be made for the laziness of recycling a popular thing (and I do agree with some of them) but it's also not really remotely exclusive to Bethesda.

New Vegas has references both subtle and straight to the other games including multiple characters appearing in New Vegas whose characters are half "hey, remember us from Fallout 2?"

I know you're fully committed to raging against Obsidian for being the failed owners of Van Buren and I respect the strong will it takes to dive deeply into that kind of ignorance.

Having said that, Van Buren was made by Black Isle. Obsidian had people who worked on earlier Fallouts but they never made their own FO project until NV.

I guess I am? What is your problem with it beyond "they reused a thing they did already" and "I don't like Liberty Prime."

You really seem to want me to go "yes, it's terrible, how dare they" but I guess I don't see the issue? They reused a popular thing. It's kind of lazy and a cheap set of fanservice but I loved similar cheap fanservice in New Vegas so I'd feel pretty hypocritical complaining about someone else getting what they want.

Apologies if this question has been answered already (I'm over 2,000 posts behind in this thread).

I'm having an issue on PC with using a controller and navigating any menus within the Pip Boy, pause menu, or main menu.

The issue is that when scrolling up or down in these menus I end up almost always skipping down or up two items and skipping over any items in between. This prevents me from selecting specific weapons or items since they keep getting skipped over. This happens regardless if I use the dpad or the analog stick to scroll through the list.

Is there any solution to this other than use a mouse and keyboard instead?

Yeah, that's why I specifically used the phrase 'iirc' on that because I wasn't precisely sure about who specifically made Van Buren (I get Black Isle/Troika/etc mixed up given their shared fates).

The point was that it took a comparitively outside company, Bethesda, to do Fallout properly in the modern era. Not surprisingly, an atavistic throwback wasn't as good to me. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear.
