the correct move is clearly to sit on your hands for the rest of the game as soon as the group consensus rules you out of contention and let the big boys play with their toys.

Using Yinsh as the base for the resource collection in the mine makes for interesting choices both in short and long term planning and only getting 1 action per phase of your turn means you're almost always having to pass on things that would be great to do/use.

No, you must consider the meta-game of your friends attitudes. To fully optimize life you must treat every board game as a single instance of an iterated prisoner's dilemma. When a oppratunity to king make presents itself you must take it, and use the situation to punish players that betray your trust or work against you. In this way, over multiple games, you can encourage your friends to treat you more favorably, for fear of retribution.

Aye. Forge War's resource gathering phase is basically a round of that on a board whose spaces mark what resources you're getting.

fozzy fosbourne posted:Wait, do you mean like Yinsh the chill-as-hell abstract? Or some other Yinsh? Yes, that Yinsh. The mine is hex-based and changes with player count, each player gets 3 Overseers (rings from Yinsh) and leaves behind Workers (markers) every move. Hexes give out a resource when a Worker is placed, and moving over Workers to flip them works the same as Yinsh except that the person with the least Workers gets the new one (and a resource) in the case of flipping your own Worker. If a cluster of 5 Workers of the same color are ever together at once, they strike and get pulled off the board. The board is cleared every 6 rounds (18 total rounds, so cleared twice) and new resource hexes are laid down. You can also get an immediate Overseer move or the ability to relocate a Worker from some of the market cards. The other large wrinkle is that the first player to move their Overseer in a turn gets the option to take a 2nd move after everyone else. Makes them last in the player order for the upcoming turn though.

Can people weigh in on Shadowrun:Crossfire? I remember back when it first came out there were all kinds of complaints about the game being awful but I think a lot of those turned out to be people who were just playing incorrectly. Then apparently Rahdo thinks it's the 'best game of 2014' which makes me think it might be worthwhile, and I enjoy the idea of a co-operative deckbuilder.

Is it still kingmaking if you're not losing, but can help another player win (within the rules of the game) to end it quicker? If for example, you don't like the game or it's dragging etc. Also is that a dick move or a problem with the game's design?

Yeah, that's being a dick, unless everyone is waiting for the game to end. But you shouldn't even have begun playing Munchkin then.

bobvonunheil posted:Can people weigh in on Shadowrun:Crossfire? It's a tricky one, and has a lot of upsides and downsides. My cop-out response is going to be 'try and see if you like it'. As for something a bit more substantive, it's a deckbuilding game that has very few cycles through your deck and a market row, with all that entails. However since it is a co-op game and you aren't competing against each other, I found this didn't come up so much. I personally liked it for a few reasons. Firstly, I liked the team-building aspect that comes with it, as you build your squad out of the 4 possible character classes and pair them with a race (each with their own mechanical benefits and disadvantages). Its also very, very hard which is personally something I like, as it felt like you really have to pull out all the stops to get a win, though you level up your characters permanently after a win so the game does get easier kinda. However due to the low number of reshuffles and market row combined with the other swingy mechanics in the game it can often feel like you are getting screwed by the game. I dunno, I like it but I can definitely see why some people would think it's bad. The good stuff is mostly in the very tactical decisions you have to make turn to turn and the tight interaction between the team members you need to pull out a win.

bobvonunheil posted:Can people weigh in on Shadowrun:Crossfire? I would watch some gameplay videos and see if it's for you. My group was expecting something RPGy, despite me telling them it was nothing like that. The theme is pasted on and the actual game is very, very "puzzly." In a way it reminds me of the card playing part of Mage Knight; you have a relatively small deck and you absolutely have to maximize your plays each turn or the game will punish you. The game's also quite hard if you don't have a plan and pay attention to what you're doing. I'm a big fan personally, but not many people I've played with have liked it. Also it's a game you basically have to sleeve imo, the card quality is terrible.

The Theme is pretty thick, as with all of Gale Force Nine's games, but I found Homeland to be really solid. It was part of my GenCon haul this year after playing a game of it. It's traitor mechanic is awesome, as in addition to a possible Terrorist Mole who is trying to sink the game without being caught, there are Political Opportunists who want to let a few Terrorist plots succeed as a means to collect political clout, which plays well into the "who is a terrorist, is there a terrorist" metagame really well. The rest of the mechanics are fairly solid, as you'll always be stretched a bit thin to stop every attack, there is a bit of random information mixed into the cards players are playing to make it a bit harder to pick out the terrorist, and it fairly consistently plays in about an hour. I didn't have high expectations, but liked it a lot, and am glad it's in my collection.

To counter foxxtrot's point, my group played it and hated it. Maybe it was just the card distribution (which is a problem in and of itself), but it was way too easy to tank things as a traitor. I think the "negative" cards have a much higher range (4-9?) than the positive cards (1-5?), so...yeah. Add that to the fact that the game is "semi" co-op and it gets real easy to win as the traitor, even despite the fact that there's no good way to hide as the traitor. It's a bad game. Get them BSG or Resistance instead if you want to give a traitor game to your friend.

Add that to the fact that the game is "semi" co-op and it gets real easy to win as the traitor, even despite the fact that there's no good way to hide as the traitor. The distribution of cards in the deck skews slightly positive, and there is only a single 9 negative in the entire deck. I'm not saying that it can't be easy to make threats fail, it's not a very easy game to win, but the deck is not so unbalanced as you think. That said, it's not always immediately clear to new players how threats can shake out, making it hard to land in a good strategy in initial games. And I've played games where the Terrorist has remained hidden really well, even people who generally don't like being a traitor. Especially since the Terrorist has a decent out of playing as an opportunist, and the cost of falsely identifying the traitor in the end game is high. Totally fair not to like the game. GF9 tends to build games that are more dependent on theme than mechanics, Homeland happens to be one where the theme doesn't trump the mechanics as they sometimes do in, say, Firefly.

I was a lot less excited after hearing their impressions. For some reason I came away from the FFG preview thinking it would be more like Twilight Struggle, spreading your influence across the galaxy, except with a fine layer of military interaction. But it sounds more like a swingy-er War of the Ring, with an extremely decisive hide and seek game at its core?

You have to learn SUSD-speak and read between the lines when they get excited so you can start to spot what kind of mechanic is really underneath the cool fluff and whether you'll personally enjoy it. I loving loved Rebellion for the PC, but it had some issues. Will wait and see on this one. (Star Wars: Twilight Struggle would have been amazing)
