Yeah, it's really staggering. The characters have at most one defining characteristic but you don't end up giving a drat about any of them. They clearly didn't understand anything about how the movies they are aping ramped up the tension. Stuff just sort of happens. They should have gone in a camp direction because maybe they would have accidentally created something entertaining that way.

The worst part is that it's supposed to be a special effects showcase but most effects look really, really drat bad. The entire movie has sub-90s-tv-show lighting that makes everything look obscenely cheap. The creature designs are fairly uninspired. There was one that maybe was supposed to be a showcase, but it gets killed off in like 15 seconds so who cares. Some shots you can't even tell what the hell is going on; you're just left with a vague impression of tentacles and flashing blue lights.

The Visitor is one of my favorite movies ever since I got to see the Drafthouse re-release. It's as if the film makers got together and said "Look, it's 1979 and the 70s are almost over. We've got all this italian mafia money to launder so let's make the most 70s movie we can possibly make and give this whole decade the proper send-off it deserves." What came out of that exercise was Franco Nero space jesus, John Huston walking down stairs to pimp music, teenage kids getting thrown out of an ice skating rink and through some windows for no reason, and Sam Peckinpah as a creepy abortionist.

If this trailer doesn't sell anyone on why they should watch "The Visitor" then I don't know what will:

https://youtu.be/c0vBRdplSps

The Visitor & The Apple are two of my favorite sendoffs to the inane new religion\cult Christianity nonsense of 70s pop occultism.

The Visitor (and the more contemporary Southland Tales) did what I consider the best possible job of aping the sweaty manic style and obsessions of Philip K. Dick, whether they meant to or not. A lot of actual adaptations try to accentuate the neat scifi ideas over the small human stories which occur in these maelstroms of chaos and doubt, or clean up his sometimes cloddish language and silly characters and story beats he uses to communicate his ideas, which is why the majority of them, like Lovecraft adaptations, are just... there. The Visitor feels very much like it was strained through the mind of a regular person of that era (who maybe needs to lay off the 7&7s and pills) attempting to cope with the sudden inbreaking of unreality.

Odoyle posted:

The Visitor's (Jerzey's) theme music stands out so much, is so wildly inappropriate, and yet it seems to be the best thing about the film. Or maybe the Sam Peckinpah cameo.

Is that the theme that sort of sounds like it would be in a Shaw Brothers movie? The big, booming triumphant thing that plays- among other times- while Jersey Colsowicz, the elderly cosmic bounty hunter, walks around bald psychic children on the rooftop of a building in downtown Atlanta, laughing his rear end off for seemingly no reason?

God, that was a good movie. I need to see it again, possibly own a copy.

As far as Franco Micalizzi's music in the Visitor goes, the "Sadness" theme is my favorite:

Watched Bound By Vengeance last night and was really bothered by the the plot. Everything that happened in the premise seemed really implausible Why isn't she going to the police?, and from there it was almost impossible to connect with the rest of the film. Throw in these messy flashback scenes that I guess are supposed to help build a sense of mystery but sort of go nowhere and it all adds up to a confusing, irritating mess. The final scene was actually sort of decent, but it was too little too late.

Also, re: The Visitor, I remember the first time this came up I thought I must have somehow missed all the sci-fi subtext in the Richard Jenkins film.

The version I watched had really bad sound. I couldn't hear what anyone was saying in any given song, which seems inimical to the purpose of the whole... being a musical thing. Still a buttload of fun regardless and I recommend it a lot. First time I watched it it was with Ladies And Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains and Purple Rain and its daft charm really helped it hold its own.

I actually think you clued me to The Apple in this thread and I never thanked you, so thanks!

Yeah Amazon Prime to me is by far the worst. I'm seriously thinking of dropping it, especially since they made it such a pain to play HD streaming through a PC due to some anti-piracy crap. Also, since they actually sell movies and digital rentals, the search and lookup interface is really junk and half the time doesn't seem to show you the movies you actually get with your subscription.

I already have prime through shipping but I have this problem as well where just simply hooking a pc up to your t.v. via hdmi despite being dhcp compliant still won't give you access to HD content. gently caress that. Fix your broken poo poo, Bezos.

No offense to you, but criticism of comedy related things always seems to be countered by people who use this weird tone like they're in the biz or something. Since when did we start giving a poo poo if they were trying their best? Does everybody expect to make it big with their own screenplay and have to own up to their comments one day?

Tbh I watched the first episode and thought it was pretty rough. I want to like it because I really like Odenkirk and I loved Mr. Show back when I was in high school, but the comedy felt pretty awkward and dated. I'll probably give it another shot though.

I think that was in response to someone saying earlier that it seemed like Bob Odenkirk was sleeping through it.

Isn't that part of Odenkirk's persona, though? In contrast to Cross who's always very confrontational. I thought there were about 2 really, really good sketches in every w/ Bob and David episode, which is about what there were in Mr. Show.

It's kind of odd that Cross has the persona of the more confrontational one because apparently in the production of the original series but was FAR more likely to be the guy yelling at you behind the scenes.

After using Chromecast 1 & 2, and a fire stick its a close call for all. Thanks to the buttholes that decided chromecast cant do prime anymore that makes the decision easier for prime people. But after Chromecast 2 came out I would give the edge to that. Its faster but the interface is a bit easier to use. But the remote for the stick is nice in the dark. Also Google seems to actively improve the chromecast while firesticks mira casting is utter bullshit after 1 year.
