torque pro is fantastic, worth every cent.

I bought a cheap $13 dollar dongle off amazon, torque says some cheap knockoffs send corrupt protocols blah blah blah, but pretty much everybody says that's bullshit. There's some kind of test it runs that shuts the 7.3 off, but guys say even the official adapter does that.

I bought this one, but i don't suggest you do. http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00DYOVXZ0/ref=pe_386430_30332290_TE_3p_dp_1

it's kinda chinsy and uses wifi instead of bluetooth, which i got so i could use my laptop for that sick hacker tuner vibe. wifi only on the phone though means you can't simultaneously check error codes and google them. Also there are more expensive programs that get more in depth than the phone stuff. This one was so chinese, it came with a disk full of pirated software with keygens and everything. pcmscan, scanmaster, and scantool. i've never touched them because i can only assume they're loaded with viruses. it also had pirated versions of torque pro and dash command, but i bought torque pro because i want it to get better. also, probably viruses.

You really shouldn't own an ODB compliant car without one. it can live monitor a whole pile of stuff, you can set up your own gauges and all that. most cheap handheld readers don't do live monitoring, so you only get freezeframe data once something has completely hosed up. this one you can see everything like coolant temp and cat temps and even MAF voltage readings on most cars, so you can get an idea of something wrong before a code is even set.

edit: anybody have any ideas for some red mudflap material? Canadian tire has those cheap plastic sleds, but they only have green or blue.

I've got red rubber gasket material, probably 3/16 and 1/4" thick which would probably be fine for mudflaps. I'll see if I can figure out how to post a photo from my phone when I get back to the office this afternoon.

The multi-pack Ikea flexible cutting boards are where you want to go. I think they come in a red and green pack.

Those look too small. I'm getting spray basically starting from about mid fender. from there to 6 inches below the body line, i'll neeed a little over 2 foot.

Yeah, the Ikea cutting boards are good on like a 93-01 Impreza, which is all I've used them on. I'm not sure how they'd work for truck flaps.

I know for truck flaps I've seen guys use big-rig mud flaps from a truck stop and just cut them in half to make two flaps, but you'd know better than I would about whether or not that works and is cheap.

I think Napa might have some generic flap material too, if memory serves. It's one of the various "you can build stuff with this but you're on your own fucko" things that you can ask for but they don't keep out front.

Thats what I did for the Scirocco. Just got a box cutter and went to town making them. I also rivotted them to the body because of the rust so YMMV if you want a professional appearance.

Yeah, i can get legit red polymer flaps for about $30 a piece, and get by with 2, but that's $60 when the raw material should really only be about $5.

So Edmonton police figure out that some trucking companies tell their guys to drive trucks as much as 17.9 tonnes overweight, hand out fines, but then don't publicly release the name of the trucking company because they're "still in business."

Luckily Alberta Justice aren't pushovers:

That $3 mil is just the start. you're only allowed so many points on your carrier profile before they really start loving with you. Level 1 inspections on everything. portable scale and thermal imaging unit parked outside your gate. points on points on points. Doesn't take much until you're uninsurable, both company and driver. 1900 convictions would pretty much mean they can't insure the trucks. as a company they're done. I would bet their insurance company dropped them yesterday.

Trucks that don't regularly run over the scales can get ghetto as all gently caress. It's quite normal to see some of the carpet vans around here driving around on the bumpstops with no tail lights.

The last time EPS did a safety blitz, out of 251 vehicles checked, 132 were declared out of service.

In all my years driving, i've never been pulled into the scale or pulled over. I was always paranoid about my logs being in order, and in the end nobody else has ever seen them. I've run over the scale 780kg over, but they usually give you 1k, especially with fluid because you're expected to be loaded to the legal limit, and it's not easy to get it exactly right.

Does Alberta not do the mandatory truck inspection station thing like Ontario does? We have inspection stations along the major highways that randomly light up signs 1-2km out telling trucks to pull in. If they try to skip the inspection a weird MOT police pickup truck chases after them.

Yeah, but the only major ones are south of edmonton on highway 2 for southbound traffic, north of calgary on highway 2 for northbound traffic, west of edmonton on highway 16, and on highway 43. the rest are rarely open, or just small pullouts with a scale that are manned a couple days a month.

That company was loaded in the city and unloaded in the city, so never had to run over a scale.

The one down near Coutts on Hwy 4 is huge and pretty much always open for all the border traffic.

I've seen some really sketchy trucks driving around cities though that never get pulled over. The landscaping dump truck that brought topsoil to my house a few years ago had a frame that was tweaked so bad the wheels weren't even close to being in line with each other and following it I could see the entire side of the truck even though I was directly behind it.

Talking to a friend with tervita, apparently that AB gill thing has been looming for about a week now. They are now required to read the registered weight off of any truck that runs over their scales and turn them away if it's not a legal load. So, coming soon to a ditch near you tervita, a whole bunch of contaminated soil.

It was a waste management site that they got busted at, not tervita, so i would imagine the city of edmonton is probably going around asking for everybody's scale records ready to gently caress anybody who's numbers look the least bit suspicious. I would think half of the gravel truck companies in alberta "went out of business" yesterday, and on monday there will be a couple hundred new gravel truck companies with the same management and phone number.

Uber is the obvious model for future shitbird short-haul transportation companies.

You got a bunch of creosote contaminated soil lying around your stadium construction site? Pull out your iPhone and tell some guy you'll never see again to take care of it somehow!

The RCMP pulled over some guy driving a Dodge Ram dump truck conversion dumping three tonnes of creosote contaminated soil into the Athabasca? That was an independent contractor, sounds like we need to do better screening haha lol.

That's actually been a thing long before uber. https://www.uship.com/ca/

And that's good.

If the guy shows up with a rusty minivan to haul your 3 ton load, you can give him 1 star.

Right now you need a contract with a company to pull their carrier profile. If it's all there in 1-5 star rating in public view, like uber, the quality of transport should go up.

Probably would be the same one as the SVX. I think they resolved/mitigated the overheating issue by that point but it would still be something to look for. Slapping in a trans oil cooler goes a long way for the 4EAT.
