I suspect that a lot of it for some depends on what you mean about PC. If PC mean, 'man what that guy said is f'd up and I'm going to judge him personally', then that's fine more or less. However if it becomes, 'man what that guy said is f'd up and now I'm going to throw him in jail', then I think there's nothing non progressive about being against that.

I'm not sure if there's anyone who actually thinks people should be jailed for saying un-PC things. There's a lot who think those ultra PC people exist, though, and that's where the liberals who are very anti-PC usually are. They're mostly white guys who like Bernie Sanders and hate the right and religion, but get real upset if anyone tells them that women still face oppression or that their abortion jokes are in bad taste.

Except people do get jailed all over the world even in western democracies. So given that along with the U.S.'s particular veneration of free speech it doesn't surprise me that some people see social pressure and think that it will somehow lead the government action if you don't vigorously defend the right to speech.

Ultra PC people do exist, though. They're not in as high a number as White Supremacists would have you believe, but I know of at least two incidents where people had their lives ruined because they said/did something unquestionably stupid and got pilloried beyond what could be considered a proportional response. There was the woman who made that dumbass Africa tweet just before she boarded a plane; some guy at Gawker dedicated his life to ruining hers and succeeded, right up to the moment where HE made a lovely tweet of his own and got his poo poo pushed in. Then there was that fan-artist who ended up trying to kill herself because cyberbullies wouldn't leave her alone; she was constantly drawing a fat character from Steven Universe as thin, which apparently makes you an irredeemable piece of poo poo. There was key staff on the show trying to step in and say "Hey, this is really terrible," and even THEY got loving roasted for it.

To be clear, none of this is to say that PC is an inherently bad thing. We should all strive to be more considerate of others and stand up for people who are marginalized. But like anything, it's possible to take it too far or get into it for the wrong reasons altogether. Anybody who genuinely wants to contribute to a safer, more inclusive world should always have that possibility in the back of their minds.

This tangent on liberal comedians' friction with the so-called PC police has drifted a lot. Sorry for kind of starting it.

My issue is with traditionally liberal comedians who clearly have a big itch to scratch to the point it affects their material; when there's clearly grating preemptive defensive posturing within their work. That's the point where I get annoyed.

Stephen Colbert and Trevor Noah were able to handle criticism well. But other people got mad at the PC police for them because they had a gripe with some person on twitter or whatever who wronged them and didn't know when to blink when it came to other people who didn't disagree with them.

Exactly, this. It's not PC run amok, it's people on the internet being stupid assholes about whatever they can possibly be stupid assholes about. The only difference here is that because of twitter/facebook/etc the anonymity is now removed and there may or may not be real life consequences to someone being a stupid rear end in a top hat on the internet, but as we all know, that lack of anonymity doesn't seem to be any deterrent whatsoever to being a stupid rear end in a top hat on the internet and tweeting racist/sexist/whatever poo poo.

People are dumb stupid assholes and twitter et al are pulling back the veil, that's all.

Canada recently started phasing out the penny. If you pay cash, it gets rounded to the nearest five cents. If you pay electronically, it's the exact amount.

Of course, almost everything in Canada is through debit cards, these days.

I was kind of blown away when I learned that, in the states, email money transfers don't really exist. I mean, they might if two people are using the same bank, but Canada has that poo poo sorted out, and it's extremely convenient. Then I learned the reason is because there are tons and tons of banks in the states, as opposed to the 8-9 we have up here, who have all signed on to use the Interac process for e-transfers.

We might pay more for poo poo, but dammit, there's never been a problem of getting the money where it needs to go. Weird hole-in-the-wall credit unions are still difficult to work with, however.

Then you learn that Canada is about a decade behind Europe, in terms of how banks work. I still have no idea why 'cheques take a week to clear' is still a thing, in Canada, or why bank holidays or weekends are still a thing; the computers really shouldn't care when I talk to an ATM or not.

I'm totally OK with getting rid of 1¢ coins, but I'll at least point out that some countries use hyperinflated currency where 1¢US is worth like 10000 of their funbux, so our little cent at least has the appearance of being worth a whole lot by comparison! :shobon:

:pwn: :pwn: :pwn: :pwn: :pwn:
This is the first topic Oliver's covered where him and I are in disagreement. Stark disagreement, at that. The arguments he made were facile.

The main point, "it costs more to make a penny than the penny's worth!," is true. The flipside of that coin is that dimes and quarters costs far less to make than the coin's face value - in 2014, about 4 and 9 cents, respectively. That year, the US Mint made $289 million worth of coinage after the costs of production, including the loss from pennies and nickels.

The secondary point, which boils down to "people don't bother picking up a penny," well, in those big cities, that appears to be true. I've never lived in NYC or San Francisco, but in smaller cities I've lived in, pennies are appreciated. However, I realize the rest of the country which resides outside of the big cities wherein these shows tape doesn't exist/matter, so I'll concede that point.

Finally, the notion of getting rid of the ha'penny in 1867, when we were all primates I guess, so what's stopping us now?? A half-penny, by definition, is a fraction of a denomination, not a denomination in itself. It was a necessity of the time, when a penny had more value. Simply put, if a dollar is 100 units, you have to be able to break it into 100 units.
