Unicorn riot posted:

After they were confronted and asked to leave, some of the men shouted racial slurs. A few of the community members walked behind the men ushering them to their car towards 14th Ave. and Morgan Ave., one block north of the 4th Precinct. The men opened fire as they reached their vehicle, shooting around 8 bullets that struck a total of five people; it’s reported that all victims have non-life-threatening injuries, one took a bullet in the stomach, a few in the leg, and one in the arm.

After the protesters were wounded by the attackers, protesters called 911 and asked for help from the police that were stationed around the precinct and the precinct itself to no avail. Protesters also stated that the police were “laughing” and “ignoring” them when they were asking for help, and that one officer actually stated “you asked for this”. After 15 minutes the first ambulance arrived. The police at the 4th Precinct declined to aid people, standing passively. The police then moved in with crowd control gear to control the crime scene and maced the crowd that was assisting the wounded and standing asking for help, and filming, as well violently grabbing and pushing a woman contributor to Unicorn Riot.

NO DON'T MAKE UP EUPHEMISMS FOR IT HE'S LYING HE'S TELLING LIES

What, then, is truth? A mobile army of metaphors, metonyms, and anthropomorphisms—in short, a sum of human relations which have been enhanced, transposed, and embellished poetically and rhetorically, and which after long use seem firm, canonical, and obligatory to a people: truths are illusions about which one has forgotten that this is what they are; metaphors which are worn out and without sensuous power; coins which have lost their pictures and now matter only as metal, no longer as coins.

We still do not know where the urge for truth comes from; for as yet we have heard only of the obligation imposed by society that it should exist: to be truthful means using the customary metaphors—in moral terms: the obligation to lie according to a fixed convention, to lie herd-like in a style obligatory for all.

...

Only by forgetting this primitive world of metaphor can one live with any repose, security, and consistency: only by means of the petrification and coagulation of a mass of images which originally streamed from the primal faculty of human imagination like a fiery liquid, only in the invincible faith that this sun, this window, this table is a truth in itself, in short, only by forgetting that he himself is an artistically creating subject, does man live with any repose, security, and consistency. If but for an instant he could escape from the prison walls of this faith, his "self consciousness" would be immediately destroyed.

Oh, and while the rebels couldn't shoot down the planes, they can and did open fire on the ejected and parachuting pilots, killing at least one, committing a war crime, and recorded it on video that they then uploaded to the Internet bragging about it.

I'm getting the impression that there is a lack of thinking things through over there

According to one of the original articles in the Ottawa Sun, it sounds like the Student Federation wanted to close it as they considered it appropriation, likely due to the focus on the physical and mindful aspects of it and not the historical or spiritual aspects. The teacher tried pitching renaming the class to "mindful stretching" but the French translation wasn't a good fit...? So they put it on hiatus while they debate further.

Basically if you don't delve into all aspects and cultural connotations and context, it's appropriation. This is why we can't have nice things.

Also, some white people believe racism against white people is a more serious problem, which makes them pretty wrong and also obstacles to progress in this regard.

Many liberals mistake politicians' political abilities for stupidity.

It's not stupidity if you're pandering to an angry base with strong voting turnout.

It's monolithic if <80% of white people agree with black people.

You can check my (many, many) posts in the Middle East thread for more info than you ever wanted to know about how ISIL is losing ground against the Kurds/YPG/SDF.

For the last part, here you go:

ISIL originally said to the US "bring your planes". After ISIL lost in Kobani and other places thanks to airstrikes, the commander of Ahrar al Sham (large Syrian Salafist rebel group backed by Turkey/Qatar/Saudi Arabia) mocked ISIL for complaining after the US did indeed "bring our planes".

Throw this one onto the pile: Trump is pro-torture, above and beyond waterboarding, whether it's effective or not.

quote:

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said Monday he not only would bring back waterboarding, the controversial interrogation technique discontinued by the Obama administration, but also would "approve more than that," even if such tactics prove ineffective.

"Would I approve waterboarding? You bet your rear end I would — in a heartbeat," Trump said to loud cheers during a rally at a convention center here Monday night that attracted thousands. "And I would approve more than that. Don't kid yourself, folks. It works, okay? It works. Only a stupid person would say it doesn't work."

Trump said such techniques are needed to confront terrorists who "chop off our young people's heads" and "build these iron cages, and they'll put 20 people in them and they drop them in the ocean for 15 minutes and pull them up 15 minutes later."

"It works," Trump said over and over again. "Believe me, it works. And you know what? If it doesn't work, they deserve it anyway, for what they're doing. It works."

He's really "saying what they're thinking," and the fact that they're getting more emboldened every day scares the poo poo out of me.

By the way, gently caress you Washington Post. Waterboarding is torture, not a "controversial interrogation technique".

I do but it is at home. You'll want to look at recent victories like the liberation of Sinjar (happened on the 13th) and Russia breaking the siege of the air base. Then you'll want to go over to The Intercept and particularly their reporter's Twitter accounts where they were passing around an analysis of ISIS announcements and the strategy, look through that with the keywords "eliminate the gray zone" to find the pieces you are looking for.

Basically ISIS has lost so much territory (the ME thread will have maps) and manpower (10-60% depending on if you believe them if the CIA) they officially announced they are pivoting from being a protostate to network operations to get numbers back up by radicalizing Muslims in the West so they have the strength to capture territory again.
