Thoughts from when I watched this at 5 am:

That disco version of Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) made me grin like an idiot both times it showed up.

"You're sending in the Undertaker? That guy's like 15 years old, he's not even Mean Mark Callous yet!"

"Just don't be offended next time if I don't say hello before I shoot" is the most Fargo line possible.

We're family Uncle Bear. Look in your heart!

Okay, here's some screengrabs of the stuff all over Ted Danson's walls

check out the note in the last one: "I like the look of very angular symbols but they shouldn't be that harsh"? Also the book next to the note is about Khmer art & architecture in Thailand.

What the poo poo. That really came out of nowhere.

That whole thing may have been my favorite episode of the season, taking Ed & Peggy out of the story for an episode really allowed everyone else to stretch out. Betsy, Floyd, Simone, Bear, and Mike all killed their scenes. :v:

I found the time jump at the start of the episode disorienting at first, but really enjoyed how they filled in the missing gaps via the plotting. Cool storytelling device.

Maybe the storyline for this episode attempts to recreate the 'missing time' phenomenon many UFO contactees experience?

So that was the KC Mob in the opening scene with the window washers?

That's the most corporate mob I've ever seen.

Also, did the Phd. of Literature KC Mob Guy (Milligan?) have one of those 'pop out of your sleeve guns, or just walk out with a pistol when he killed the Undertaker?

nah it was "Get it under control OR we send the undertaker." It was an implicit threat, not helpfully sending re-enforcements.

He said that at first but then there was another phone call where he just said "we're sending the undertaker." Doesn't make sense to do that if he's being sent to kill Mike. Plus when he arrived, he went straight to Mike's room, and was let in by Mike's henchman not expecting a conflict. Then Mike talked about blaming his death on the Gerhardts, meaning the higher ups in KC expected the undertaker to be fighting them and wouldn't be surprised by Mike being alive. The undertaker being sent wasn't a helpful reinforcement, it was basically the higher ups saying "you've failed, we're sending in a professional, we don't have confidence that you can do the job anymore."

A+ television every week, goddamn! Maybe Hanzee is holding Ed and forcing him to draw Milligan out from his hole or Ed is a legit under the radar contractor.

I think one of the following is more likely than Ed legitimately being a contractor:

- The first thing you said, with either Hanzee or Dodd himself
- Dodd let the Kanas City thing slip, or maybe the dude who got hit with the sink was still alive and mentioned it
- Hanzee is actually working to screw over the Gerhardts as well (he didn't seem at all receptive to Bear trying to stop the war)
- Since Milligan and his crew were snooping around town, maybe Ed was able to piece things together

Although actually, I guess they could be doing a full History of Violence thing with Ed, and the reason he was so dead set on owning the butcher shop was because he wanted to cling to the new life he had escaped into. I prefer he and Peggy as bumblers though.

Looking back, Ed:
  • Froze the corpse of a man he killed.
  • Dismembered and stuffed each part into a meat grinder.
  • Did god knows what with the processed "meat".
  • Methodically cleaned blood from his garage.
  • When a gun was pointed at him, he immediately got to cover. When the second gunman came in, he threw a pan and moved swiftly to tackle him.
  • Seemingly had no PTSD from doing any of this.

You could claim self defense for putting a cleaver in a man's skull, and stabbing a man to death with a spade. And maybe he was so focused on their future that he wasn't phased by killing two people.

But especially considering how he handled himself when the butcher shop burned down, I'd imagine there's more to Ed that just a cow. He's got hidden horns.

Your final point is right -the Undertaker was taking over his role in the fight against the Gerhardts, but I still think that Mike being taken out might have been part of the plan. My guess is that he was expected to go quietly because that's how the mob works? It certainly felt like it was being built up like Mike had given up, only to have the very sudden twist of him busting out and taking out the Undertaker.

At least, I have no other idea why Mike would be taking out the Undertaker other to save his own hide. Unless he's a sleeper for someone else? :v:

Yea, I looked past all of this at first. Maybe the PTSD will come later. Maybe he just treated the body like any other carcass, he is a butcher.

But something else seems to be going on. Very good writing to disguise this the way they did. The "ok then" and everything - he just wanted to blend in.

I don't think he has some weird obscure past. He grew up in a tiny town where everyone knows his name, has literally never left his parents house, and stayed stateside when everyone else left for war.

He's just an effective butcher and a lucky bumbler.

Maybe they would have killed him later, but I think Mike's main concern was that he wouldn't get another chance to prove himself. Even if they do let him live he's just gonna be a regular hired mook for the rest of his probably short career. Killing the Undertaker lets him stay in charge so he can be the one who wins the war.

Well, the story of Miller's Crossing is that John Tutorro pleads for Gabriel Byrne not to shoot him, he doesn't, but then Tutorro, genius he is, comes back to try and blackmail Byrne. So if they're taking that part of Miller's Crossing, it's a little late in the game (but certainly not impossible).

Yeah I think the scene was deliberately set up to be like that. The only thing that could have pushed the fake foreshadowing any further would be if Karl had offered to escort her there and she dismissed him.

I think at the very least it was up in the air. Your murderous gangster bosses aren't pleased with your performance and are sending a dude called the Undertaker to clean up/evaluate the mess you've made (right after basically calling you a worthless "darky"). Even if he isn't going to murder you immediately, your prospects for survival have dipped significantly depending on how much he/your bosses decide you've costed them. Even if they decide to make temporary use of you, you might get a bullet in the back at some point rather than the face, and you've probably been downgraded to a front-line thug. Murdering him and blaming the Gerhardts means that you're not getting shot by this dude now (or after he's decided you're of no use to him), and shows the bosses that the Gerhardts are better than even they expected, while buying you more time to rectify the situation.

My dumb ideas:

Before we hear from Ed in episode 7, the last time we saw him was at the end of episode 6. At that point he is riding off in a cop car with Hank and Lou, presumably(?) going home, and we see that Hanzee has been tracking them since they left the police station.* My guess is that he arrives home to find that Peggy has hidden Dodd somewhere in the house. They decide to leave town, along the way (using Peggy's cash?) to buy a new car so they can escape any APBs for Ed's truck. And aw shucks, Sioux Falls is right on the way to California, so let's stop there for the conference and use this Dodd guy as some kind of leverage. All the while, Hanzee has been trailing them, using his ace skills to gather information, waiting for a chance to pounce.

The one thing I'm a little unclear on is how Ed got Mike Milligan's phone number. It is possible that Hanzee has already struck, perhaps using Peggy as a hostage to get Ed to make that phone call. Or the Blumquists could have made a deal with Dodd (and Hanzee?) that the Gerhardts will leave them alone if they help them draw out the KC crew.

As for Mike, I'm not sold on the idea that he was going to be whacked by the Undertaker. Mike isn't a dumb guy: if he suspected that he had become shoot-on-sight to the KC bosses, I don't think he would stick around, and both Mike's phone call with KC and the meeting in the hotel room seem to support this. While the KC boss says "you're done" in the second phone call, I don't see how this implies violence, especially when considered in the context of their earlier "bad performance review" conversation: all I am seeing is that Mike is an ambitious dude trying to play office politics and work his way up in the organization (side note: I liked how Mike seemingly copied the Undertaker's "two dudes of 'exotic' ethnicity" henchmen). The meeting in the hotel room also seems to support the idea that Mike was just getting demoted, due to the Undertaker crew's surprise at the gun, and Mike's comment afterward. The surprise is pretty noticeable on all three of their faces, and the henchmen take a moment to realize they're in a trap and start fighting back. Mike's comment to Kitchen is similarly supportive, as "we'll tell the boss the Gerhardts got 'em" seems to imply that neither of them are exiled or anything.

* The Magical Indian aspect of Hanzee's character is one of the most eye-rolly parts in the season for me. Ah, he's the Indian guy: he's good at tracking and hunting, and he was an orphan who was adopted into a white family who "treated him like their own", and now he's a loyal minor-tier character in his adopters' "culture" :jerkbag:
