Barack Obama is awarding Shirley Chisholm the Presidential Medal of Freedom right now. Chisholm was the first black Congresswoman and ran against Richard Nixon in 1972.

Incidentally Something Awful has the same effect, except in the other direction. Someone who registers here to follow an LP and then browses to D&D might pick up on some poo poo that causes them to become more liberal than they would have been otherwise. It's sort of the nature of multi-topic forums.

They're also about to release the dashcam footage of the shooting. Granted, they're only releasing it after a relatively lengthy legal process and an order from a judge ordering its release.

In many states-- not all, I think, but many-- a charge of first-degree murder also includes inherent in it the lower charges. It may not necessarily include manslaughter, and I don't know how Illinois law works. Criminal law is my weakest area, though, so what do I know?

It may not necessarily include manslaughter, and I don't know how Illinois law works. Well, you're gonna get a kick out this -- the prosecutor involved in this has already been accused of going to bat for cops before...she was accused of intentionally undercharging a cop who fired multiple shots into a crowd (killing one person) who's case was eventually dismissed because the judge thought that he should have been charged for first degree murder and not manslaughter, the original charge he was given. So who the gently caress knows what's going to happen here...well, we all know what's going to happen, which is nothing. But hey, a cop got charged with first degree murder, so baby steps I suppose.

Only because a Judge forced the release of a video that would make it so it would be career suicide to do anything but charge first degree.
