Chef is really solid. Definitely didn't do anything to quell the nagging desire I've had for years to open a food truck.

On a side note, are there any other good movies about chefs or cooking, on streaming or otherwise? I'm talking fictional, so not like Jiro Dreams of Sushi or anything like that. The only other good one I can think of is The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover, but that's about food in the same way, say, 2001 is about space travel.
Check out Like Water For Chocolate. It's a Spanish movie that blew my mind about food and 1900's Mexico, and romance, and giant huge bushes.

Oh man, I watched this anime a while ago and it made me pretty sad. Perhaps I was projecting a bit but the person watching it with me felt the same way.

It's lovely that the main character is able to glean contentment through a bit of hedonism but the enormity of what she's so stalwartly repressing hangs heavy over the whole thing.

She's miserable about her work, and has no one in the world to talk to other than herself. It's stated outright that she's a "christmas cake," and it seems like she's given up any hope of making meaningful social contact.

Each vignette seems like a suicide note about a delicious dish.
Was this just me?

:(

Yeah. Like a lot of people she's obsessive to compensate for or cover her anxieties. She's just chosen to be obsessive about food.

I certainly don't think it's as dark as you do though. I'd label it a comedy before anything else, though it's a little darker than it initially seems.

i'm enjoying the show, but not without reservations. the narration's pretty drat bad, and the cop character they introduce a couple episodes in is just the worst.

David Tennant's killing it, though.

The cop character is an annoying butt.

I really love how tennants killing though. The Purple Man is a serious mofo and is not to be trifled with, and david's clearly letting this come across.

I really love it so far, and am going to watch the rest today.

Jessica Jones is a lot like Dexter or House of Cards in that I'd like it a lot more without the narration. I don't know anything about the source material, but the performances are all good and the fight coreagraphy is brutal. The music is great too, especially that horrific stringed loop that plays during some Purple Man bits.

it does seem like they stop using the narration entirely about halfway through the season, which is as clear a sign as any that it was a mistake.

i like the ultra cheesy Steve Vai guitar solo that kicks in near the end of the main theme.

Two equally important things.

One, Carrie-Anne moss says she didn't work much the last few years because she wanted to take time off to raise her kids, and she's got mad Matrix money.

Two, you guys weren't kidding. The Guest totally shits the bed for act 3. Taut, exaggerated thriller with horror movie tropes is much more interesting than on-the-nose slasher and action movie send-up.

Oh well. But at least I have new workout inspiration from Matthew Crawley's lean-jacked look. #fitnessgoals

I finished it and it's super uneven. I feel like if they had taken out the padding they could have had an amazing 8-episode series but as it is it's really bloated with side characters that contribute nothing to the overall plot and keeps making people act really conveniently stupid in the name of keeping the conflict going.

That and for how amazing the fights were in Daredevil the action in JJ is really bad. Like, I get that it's not supposed to be some slick styling kung-fu show but at the very least they could have made her super jump not look on par with something from a 70s sentai TV show.

The weirdo twins hurt to watch. I think that this with out padding and her without super powers and fight scenes would have been a better horror series rather than a super hero "whatevs".
