I'm not trying to say that the poll means that Trump WILL behave like Romney. But rather that Trump performing as well as Romney belies the claim that Trump cannot compete against Hillary. If Romney can come from a meaningless 44% to take 47% in a general, it is entirely possible for Trump to do likewise.

Now there are plenty of other reasons to believe he couldn't (big money might stay home, because they may not like what Trump means for their chances to control public discourse and public policy) but all things considered the same, there is absolutely a path for Trump to be competitive if Republicans behave the way they have in the past (i.e. getting behind their candidate despite his credentials). But then again, we've never seen the non-establishment wing win a nomination since Goldwater.

Being down 4% in the general is not so much "competing" as it is "getting annihilated." Obviously if there's some major event or if the economy shits itself things change. It's not like Trump has no chance if he wins the nomination. Anyone with an R or D next to their name has a chance. It doesn't make him winning particularly likely, though.

They were laughing and joking around during the last presser. It was pretty jarring. It is almost like they don't know the cameras are on them, and it is a horrible optic. The officer for public relations was laughing her rear end off as was the ATF agent, then when the presser started they all lined up and looked solemn. I'm wondering if they are going to be called out on this behavior over the next few days.

In a way that leaves me felling kinda sad and gross it's almost comforting to know these kinds of events don't even make people bat a loving eye anymore and significant hay won't be made from this come election time because nobody cares.

Shooter did work for the county, had been at the party and had left angry. Female shooter was either engaged to or married to the male shooter. Still unknown whether 3rd suspect in custody was involved. They believe at this point it may have just been the 2 shooters. Still no motive.

Moralists don't really *have* beliefs. Sometimes they stumble on one, like on a child's toy left on the carpet. The toy must be put away immediately. And the child reprimanded.

I work in a DA's office. You see the worst of humanity day in and day out. So yeah, it gets easy to joke around with your coworkers with tragedy staring you in the face. You finish entering the case details of the two year old who got his head crushed by his drunk angry father and then you ask your coworker what they're bringin to the Christmas party next week.

It's similar to what you see with nurses or morticians or anyone else in a depressing line of work.

So far Democrats and Republicans together do not like that tourists are in the US without telling anybody they're here. So they want those rules changed. Dems will cave on expanded military action though, and Obama will feel pressure that he's being soft, and not bombing hard enough. Basically:

What I'm trying to convey is not that Trump is particularly likely to win as opposed to any other Republican candidate, but rather that he has a clear path to victory that will very likely be influenced far more by the presence or absence of factors like the economy or possibly major terrorist incidents immediately before the election, followed by fundamentals of the electoral map than by whether or not Trump himself is likable. And by that criteria, Trump, if nominated, has almost as good a chance as any other Republican granted the nomination.

The particular focus on Trump, then, is primarily due to the fact that he remains well-positioned to be said nominee.

In other words, I'm primarily trying to imply that claims that "psht, there's no way Trump would win" made on the basis of Trump being... well... somehow uniquely unpalatable to the American voter are probably wrong.
