Generally police are trained that once you leave a scene, your ability to collect evidence is finished. You can't put up tape and lock the door and still think your chain of custody is intact when you come back the next day. Once you leave, you're done. That said, not a lawyer and while my crime scene experience includes plenty of murders, nothing with this level of visibility.
