On one level, I can't see that happening, considering they still have Advent Children set afterwards. But give me a post-game story mode where I get to play as Biggs, Wedge, Aerith and Jessie beating up Jenova in the lifestream, I'd be fine with that Square. They did something like that for one of their other remakes, as I remember it.

e: Thinking back to FF7, that game was violent and lewd as poo poo. I'm just thinking of Sephiroth's massacre of Shinra headquarters which leaves dozens of bloody bodies everywhere. They'll have to carefully go around that to not get a mature rating.

I bet Remake won't include Cloud beating the poo poo out of Aeris while she's lying helplessly on the ground after the Temple of the Ancients goes pop. It's a weird game in that it's simultaneously both darker and goofier than most people seem to remember it being.

Of course ultimately there is only one scene that truly matters and will absolutely need to be included in it, which is Cloud being stripped by and taking a group bath with Mukki and his buddies.

Didn't they also do something similar for the FFIV remake, where you suddenly could get all those suckers who had died for the story back at the end?

They all come back to life before the ending anyway, the remake just made it so you could play as them instead of having them praying for you. Also it was neat because it added new bits to the ending depending on which characters were in your party and who was back praying for you.

Cloud straight up beats up Aerith on screen while being mind controlled at one point. I can't see any way of keeping that scene and not getting a mature rating.

I'll actually probably play Ni no Kuni 2 happily. I know NnK1 gets panned these days but there was something charming about the game that kept me with it. I think it was probably the OST and just still beating a game over its head despite it trying to sabotage your enjoyment all along the way.

This isn't Movies where ratings can mean the difference between a flop and success. Ratings largely don't matter if you're not aiming for the small children market. The difference between T and M is not remotely the same as PG-13 and R.

It feels like the majority of games that get released in here the UK get a 16 or 18 PEGI rating. It's hard to compare though, the effects of getting different ratings are very different in different countries. I get the sense that the high CERO ratings in Japan have far more of an effect than the ones over here, for example.

I'd argue it matters more for a Japanese company where they do have a particular stance on violence and FF7 gets away with a fair bit due to its crude graphics. Given the cartoony Dragon Ball action of Advent Children I can see them toning down some of the darker moments where Sephiroth is stacking civilian bodies on his sword.

They just have to make the combat not poo poo and fix your partner AI. Or let you set the AI options.

Like straight up "punched in the face repeatedly in modern graphics"? That's not particularly common.

I disagree with CottonWolf though, I don't see how that scene would affect the game's rating as there are far bloodier parts in that game and there is zero reason why the gender of the person getting beaten would make any kind of difference when it comes to that. They might tone it down a bit to make it seem less brutal but it won't be because of ratings.

Tellah's is the one that actually sticks, yeah. Not that you would ever want him back since he never gains MP and actually loses stats more than he gains them. Given the option to use Palom or Rydia you'd be dumb to use him even if you could.

I think it's the whole context of the thing rather than the gender actually. A mentally ill/mind controlled character beating down their sympathetic ally while they don't fight back. It's just really dark.

I haven't played Type 0 so I can't make a comparison but dismemberment is a big no-no and you have a guy with a 20ft long sword carving people up.

All I'm saying is that if FF7 were made today with everything intact, weird sex jokes and impaled giant snakes and all, it would definitely be an M game which I don't think Square Enix necessarily wants to arguably the biggest title in their franchise that has historically kept a specific tone and look for its sequels. Even Final Fantasy 15 is fanciful action with giant plastic swords.

Some people are real mad that everyone isn't using british and a story that no one finished because the people that complain about rpg stories certainly would've mentioned the clusterfuck that was the last quarter of it.

The one thing I'll say it that the game has a very MGSV pacing of dripping story scenes.

It is, but while it might be more uncomfortable to watch it's unlikely that it'd affect the actual rating more than all the other violent and messed up stuff that happens in the game.

But like I said it's most likely going to be toned down a bit as it's hard to make it work the same way when you're trying to be realistic, although I hope they'll find at least some way to show the hosed up state Cloud is in.

Basically, as far as I am, my writeup of Xenoblade X is this:

Story: The story is barely-there. The cutscenes are dull but they are mostly a handful of minor scenes in-between long periods of exploring and having fun fights and so-on. The opening is too long and wordy for its own good which is the biggest problem.
Graphics: Literally everything that isn't the character faces is a huge step up and it's honestly an awesome game to just run around and explore in. The character faces are really freaking bad.
Combat: Way better in every area except the fact that there's less cohesion to character design because there is more customization. This generally works out for the better but you don't have the firm defined character playstyles that Xenoblade had which is disappointing. On the other hand healing isn't a tremendous pile of poo poo, you can do sidequests without ending up hilariously overleveled, and there is more thought to a lot of abilities than 'use ability on cooldown' thanks to the expanded cooldown mechanic.
Exploration: Basically the most fun I've had exploring in a JRPG ever and honestly more fun than exploring in a lot of WRPGs because movement feels great and jumping is an actual thing you can do instead of a slight hop off the ground.
Music: The music is largely pretty good but goddamn exhausting. It is constantly 'on' which is good during pitched battles against deadly foes but really tiresome during cutscenes or town scenarios. They really should have gone for some more ambient music and kicked into higher gear for action instead of being in high gear almost 24/7.

Apparently Cloud is actually reasonably popular among teenagers still. Like not"FFVII is popular among teenagers." Cloud is. I think it's just entirely a case of something being popular because people told other people it was popular. I suspect it also contributes to why a lot of people who are fans of the characters are fans of the weird internet fanfiction version of the character because it's the only one they know.
