Statistically, this is true - gun owners are more likely to be white, more likely to be male, and more likely to be conservative than the population as a whole. If you replace "tribe" with "market or demographic segment", you're not wrong.

So yeah, they're a social group that people notice and judge differently based on inclusion or exclusion to that group.

I think I read recently (maybe in this thread) that Cruz's Iowa numbers are so high because that's the only place he's spent any money. It's a strategy to artificially extend his loss, rather than a strategy to secure a win.

Well, yeah, but losing Iowa would be a major blow for Trump and it's also obviously a story for Trump not winning.

Let's play the "how much of this is bullshit" game!

Requiring a specific, credible threat before alarming the public is too much work! We need something to remind us that there are non-specific, non-credible threats all around us.

quote:

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson says he will soon announce a new national alert system aimed at better informing the public given the "new phase" of the global terrorist threat the U.S. is facing.

The department used to have a color-coded terror alert system that was put into place after Sept. 11, but that was replaced by the National Threat Advisory System (NTAS) in 2011.

Johnson said NTAS has never been used because it sets too high a bar, namely that it depends on there being a specific, credible threat to the homeland.

But, now, the U.S. is facing the prospect that people inspired by global terrorist groups may remain "below our radar and could act on a moment's notice."

That reality, he said, requires a new system that has an "intermediate level" to it and he expects to announce what the new system is in the coming days.

The goal of the system would be to inform the public at large – rather than allowing the public to get information piecemeal through news leaks — tell them what the government is doing about it, and what the government is asking the public to do.

Conceptually it sounds like "Here's the things we're aware of and investigating, not just the things we're certain about," which sounds to me like an excellent way to warn anyone actually planning anything to pack up shop, so surely it can't be that.

No. Before scrapping it a recommendation was to drop green and blue and make yellow the new green.

France's has been at maximum since January.

according to wiki, no

"The threat level was never lowered to Low (Green) or Guarded (Blue) (page 12)."

e: lol the final page has examples of what each level could look like and doesn't even include blue or green. there were literally no criteria to meet.
