I think part of the phobia people have is the creepy painted on smile, that sometimes you can't really tell who it is, and it just triggers some reptilian response when you see/hear about someone that's supposed to be happy and fun and joyful doing terrible things. I'm cool with clowns, they don't bug me...mostly because every summer I see an old-timey 20s Ford truck driving around town, tooting it's old horn, with a shitload of clowns hanging off and waving at people when the little local carnivals are open.

The issue is that clowns do look weird up close, but that's because traditional clown facepaint was designed to be seen from the bleachers in a circus, not up close. It's mean to exaggerate and make visible facial expressions from a distance, and does look odd up close. That and the classic "Creepy Clown" was originally designed to BE creepy and off, and people just start thinking that's what clowns look like so now when people design clowns they make them look creepy even if they don't mean to. This is what modern Circus Clowns look like:

I remember hearing somewhere that the biggest clown colleges are actually incredibly competitive and in one or two cases, harder to get into than an Ivy League school. (I am also scared of clowns, but the only clown I was ever exposed to growing up was Ronald McDonald and let's be serious, he's loving terrifying.)

Clowns and amusement park mascots terrified me as a child, and still bother me slightly as an adult. It has nothing to do with a scary movie or story. More than anything it's a stranger with no face or familiarity that wants to interact with you regardless. Strangers can be unnerving to kids, but at least 99% of them will leave you alone like you don't exist. Chucky the giant dirty mouse with no real face and dead eyes? He's actively looking for you. Hide.

This happened a week ago so I prolly missed it being discussed, but what happens when you try and support outdated film formats? It doesn't work and everything is out of focus, and they have to project it digitally for the second half so you can actually see the movie.

I've told my family and friends for the longest time I'm afraid of clowns, but thats not true It's just this one specific loving clown toy my grandma had with green polka dot pants gently caress that toy forever; I walked in to her room as a teenager once to look for a book she wanted, saw it on the shelf after 10 years of not seeing it and almost poo poo my pants
