I wonder if they thought having people sit in it would make it heavier, when in reality it just gave it a higher center of gravity.

There's been a good amount of talk about wood chipper deaths in this thread and it reminded me of something that happened in my area when I was growing up. My mom worked at a rose nursery for several years and the walkie talkies that they used would pick up the radio signals from a nearby factory that made paper ( I think). So anyway, she goes into work one day and they're hearing on their walkie talkies that a guy that worked at the factory had committed suicide by putting himself through one of the industrial shredders. Feet first. He'd found out his wife was cheating on him and didn't want to live anymore.

re. acetone chat -- it's surprisingly non-toxic. It's a common organic compound that's found in a lot of food products in small quantities, especially fermented things, and is even produced in your own body in trace amounts. Your liver knows how to handle it. I wouldn't drink it, but if you did, it's not likely that you'd die.

Bad enough to do it at all, but feet first? drat, the only way that even makes the slightest but of sense is if you're trying to kill yourself and trying to punish yourself as much as possible at the same time. That goes way beyond cheating, that seems like manslaughter levels of guilt required

Who knows what the whole story was but the whole premise is just insane. It reminds me of this Unsolved Mysteries episode I saw when I was a kid where a guy supposedly lowered himself into molten liquid. The Dave Bocks case. It freaked me out and I'm convinced to this day that he was probably murdered for trying to blow the whistle on unsafe work conditions. http://unsolved.com/archives/dave-bocks

I heard his remains are still sealed in a drum, it was a furnace for working on some kind of uranium substance. They weren't sure if he was alive/conscious when he entered the furnace. At like 1:00 AM there was a tiny dip in the chart on the furnace temperature that they suspect was caused by him going into the furnace.

I had a tree limb fall on some power lines in my front yard a while back, pretty much everything that had a DC circut in it, that was not connected to an surge protector was fried. Lots of stuff was just toast, but damnit I needed that microwave. So, I opened it up and wired it up to a 120v covered toggle switch and it works like a charm. Timers be damned. I am the OSHA

Lurking Haro posted:Yeah, you should have used a keyswitch instead. Nah use one of those massive pistol-grip switches like the ones on switchgear. (We have those for "86 lockout" circuits, where if the breaker trips offline, an operator has to walk to the breaker cubicle and reset that switch manually to permit the breaker to close again.) Should be rated for 120VAC/120VDC.

I like the idea, phooey to useless clocks and constantly-running power vampires. I'd probably go with one of those spa/light timer switches like http://www.electricsuppliesonline.com/intermatic-fd5m-spring-wound-countdown-timer.html rather than just a normal toggle SPST, that way you don't have to be as worried about leaving it on when less than sober. Does the door auto-cutoff still work, or was that wired as low voltage to the computer?

I used it to melt a bunch of glass a while back and the toggle switch was more than handy due to the durations involved.

I guess i could have if i wired to to be constantly on when it it was plugged in but that would have been a bad idea, so the toggle switch. Speaking of bad ideas, somewhere around here I have a motion activated birdhouse/food processor combination (Never used, I am not a monster and I like birds.).
