Commodity prices used to be tied in some way to reality when there was a physical seller and buyer, now that wall street managed to lobby its way in to being able to speculate on commodities without ever interacting with the actual good the prices are meaningless.

True enough. Its still a commodity though and will forever be trapped in a boom/bust cycle. I just dont see oil reaching the same highs, or lows, as weve recently seen due to recent global demand for alternative energy.

Wouldn't that tend to drive both the highs and the lows downwards rather than reducing the magnitude of the oscillations?

Boils my blood how they keep referring to these people as "owners" or "homeowners". They don't own the land. They might own the building on the land.

This issue is why you don't lease land on a reserve. You want to rent from a semi-sovereign micro-nation that likely has little to no history of the rule of law, while not being a citizen of said nation? Then cry when said nation imposes new terms?

For people in parts of the
Sydney area.

Issued at 10:41 am Wednesday, 16 December 2015.

THIS INCLUDES A TORNADO WARNING.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 10:40 am, very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Sydney Airport and Maroubra. These thunderstorms are moving towards the north. Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect Sydney City, Sydney Olympic Park, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and waters off Bondi Beach by 11:10 am and Hornsby, Ryde and Terrey Hills by 11:40 am.

Tornadoes, very destructive winds, large hailstones and very heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding are likely.

Radar suggests possible tornado near Kurnell, and moving to north. Bureau confirming wind gust greater than 200 km/h reported at Kurnell 1030am

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don’t walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 11:40 am.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Metropolitan, Illawarra and parts of the Hunter districts.

Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau’s website at https://www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 218. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

Australia has an extremely similar economy to ours in a lot of ways:
  • Exposure to highly volatile resource-extraction (in their case, minerals) which are currently on a downward swing, but
  • the boom from said resource extraction has produced distorting effects in the market including a large portion of uneducated/untrained drug addicts roaming the blasted desert in search of guzzoline and arm-mounted crossbows, except for those who have jobs in
  • the FIRE industry, which is stoking the flames ever higher in the hope of continuing to inflate the property bubble, which is helped by
  • poorly overseen foreign investment in homes
  • and declining living standards as well as greatly increased personal debt which means the property bubble has to be
  • bolstered by a failing neoconservative government that destroyed lives rather than risk embarrassment or reasonably consider any opposition to their ideology
  • "but at least we're not America hur hur beer commercials"
Surprisingly, however, they aren't hosed over by ridiculous import duties by UPS, and their cellphone costs are reasonable. Dunno about internet.

On the Australia subject, I'm surprised Clarke and Dawe haven't done a video making fun of property values. Though they did do a joke at some point about servicing debt being the new normal, instead of actually ever paying something off.
