One of the interesting aspects of this film is watching people trying to discuss it and interpret what happened in it but having to rely on their memory and not being able to watch scenes on youtube or look up the script or wookieepedia pages to settle arguments. Lots of people struggling to make sense of things in the non-spoilered thread.

I'm kind of happy there was no good explanation for why a certain stormtrooper felt the need to carry his anti lightsaber weapon into battle that particular day. Silly poo poo is OK in my sci fi.

Luke could abuse animals from his t-16 which was good enough to let him fly an xwing, and also should have alerted CPS on Tatooine.

Anakin was a slave (with a cushy two-floor house and, oddly enough, time off work) and he could race pods that are usually handled by aliens or machines. Jedi are natural pilots. They're naturals everything except romance.

People don't have to think about them because they can parrot what they heard someone funny say as an authority. Is that cynical of me? I dunno. If you run a forums search (or an archive search!) for given phrases from the RLM reviews, for example, 'steps in the pooopy', you get multiple verbatim results.

Silly poo poo is OK in my sci fi. Just because something can withstand a lightsaber, does not make it specifically an anti-lightsaber weapon. To me, it felt like some sort of advanced batton useable for various tasks. It just so happens that they made it strong enough to also withstand lightsabers. Kinda like how you could call any steel stick an anti-sword weapon.

In the intro scene we see a star destroyer silhouetted against a white planet. Troop pods are dropped, stormtroopers do their thing, Poe sends BB8 off and gets captured, etc., but that poo poo all happens on this new desert planet, Jakku. And if there's anything we know about the planets in Star Wars it's that the local geography of the few scenes we get to see close-up of any planet will be represented as covering the entire planet (Hoth, snow = all white; Tattooine, desert = all yellow; Coruscant, city = one big city; that one planet they go to that has Maz's bar = lake country planet; Bespin, cloud city = gas giant; Kamino, oceans n poo poo = water world, Dagobah, marshes = moldy green planet, etc.) There is so little diversity on all of these planets, but I digress. My point is, in that intro scene, was that star destroyer actually silhouetted against a perfectly aligned backside shot of the Starkiller base and we were all totally oblivious to that fact until the big exposition shot? Or am I just retarded for not realizing that in the first place? Or am I totally off and that's not at all what the first scene was let alone the same movie?

Luke Skywalker got jumped and owned by drunks, loving Jawas, and was hand held by Solo/Ben/Leia for the first two films. He was a great pilot and decent mechanic, which was established early on when the first thing we hear Luke talk about to his uncle is him being asked to join the Rebellion by former friends because he was such a natural talent. He was one member of a much larger group, whom they needed and he needed. Rey is never in peril or in distress, and the scenes that revolve around her seem to build no tension. Hell her purposefully vague backstory and introduction leave a lot to be desired. Which is weird because Finn is probaly the best Star Wars character outside of Vader and had a lot of interesting parallels with Ren (one is suffering the burden of a big legacy and family name to live up to, the other is suffering from having nothing like that and being considered a worthless tool), and seemed to resonate with the actual themes of the story. Also the romance was weirdly kiddy G rated in comparison to epic romances in serials. "Get on the ship, THEN KISS HER" would be a better moment than the weird "can we show a black man kissing a white woman?" vibe i got

The Darth Plagueis novel is really the Emperor's origin story, and then basically Palpetine's behind the music of how he ended up leading the senate. I thought it was interesting enough for that reason, and it was written by James Luceno who in my opinion is one of the better EU writers There was so little to Plagueis that I was left wondering why they wouldn't let people write about him for so long, because if that's the story, while not bad, it doesn't seem like someone you can base something that's going to attract a lot of even Star Wars fans to it as a bigger media project (his portions are basically sci fi corporate intrigue). It does seem like a pretty natural thing to cover/redo at some point. E: it's also interesting in the sense that it is probably the last thing Lucas had some direct contribution to (as it was written as he was in the process of selling the company, and Luceno had "top level access" via Howard Roffman as opposed to the usual layers of editorship in the EU), so while he didn't write it if you to speculate ever "well how did Lucas see all the prequels coming together" it would probably be something at least slightly related to this.
