So the "affluenza" guy is all over the news again and people don't seem to understand that a minor can't be tried as an adult for a DUI and they're all just turning into a giant pitchfork mob about it.

As far as I know, no one in the jury actually bought into that affluenza garage and they still found him guilty.

Whenever I saw people bitching about that I bring up when I tried it as a kid after prodding from parents. 95% of the houses I went to just plain said no. One house said yes and gave me $2. Two other houses said yes but then refused to pay after I was done.

Lottery of Babylon posted:

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles roll
ed into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full.. The students responded with a unanimous ‘yes.’

The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed..

‘Now,’ said the professor as the laughter subsided, ‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things—-your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions—-and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.. The sand is everything else—-the small stuff.

‘If you put the sand into the jar first,’ he continued, ‘there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and mow the lawn.

Take care of the golf balls first—-the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented. The professor smiled and said, ‘I’m glad you asked.’ The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.

No joke I had a prof who gave us this exact spiel, pulled out a jar of golf balls and everything, only the golf balls were class assignments and the sand was spending time with family and friends.

I'm not defending the guy, but as far as I know he couldn't be given serious time for what he did even if they wanted to. I've never really heard of teenagers getting serious time over manslaughter unless there was some other kind of felony involved. He was not tried as an adult, because teenagers generally aren't tried as adults over manslaughter.

At most, he would have spent some time in juvenile detention and his record would have been expunged.

Now that he's violated his parole he can be tried as an adult and could potentially do more time than he would have in the first place.

Yeah I remember as a kid a few people offering me what amounted to $2 an hour to do their yard work in the 90's. I just looked at them like they were insane and refused. Most of the time when I see things like that I hear "I want to pay somebody absolute beans to do something I'm too lazy to do." It isn't about teaching kids responsibility and how to do jobs it's about fleecing children who might not know any better. Yeah you can probably get a soda, a candy bar, and a comic book out of it but is it really worth it? You could probably scrape change off of parking lots and make the money faster.

It totally teaches kids something valuable. It teaches them that people will try and screw them over and pay them a pittance for their time, then call them lazy when they refuse to do it. It's great training for being an adult in the modern world.

Oh. Yeah, I figured we had a different idea about IQ tests.... Of course an IQ test is only useful if you are able to understand the questions and know exactly what is expected of you. I only took some tests while applying for jobs, this was used by some companies to get from 500 applicants down to 3, so there was an even playing field (people with 10 years of school education). Of course it's useless to compare middle-class-education-havers with 3rd-world-dirt-collectors.

Yeah, if you want kids to work don't offer then insulting amounts and then act like they are the ungrateful ones.

Here where I work (a small family business) one of our employee's kids asked if he could clean the office for a little money. He moped the floor, wiped down the doors, just did a good job making things look nice. Probably took him an hour or two and the boss gave him $20 for his efforts. This was a 10 year old.

Turns out kids are plenty willing to work if you are actually gonna give them a fair deal. But if you're just going to try and blatantly exploit them then it shouldn't be surprising when they gently caress off to play video games instead.
