I'm pretty sure I only have 2MPLs on mine and I'm not on my gaming computer so I can't pull it up to tell you off hand. My guess is that I threw an extra few heat sinks or more ammo in there.

This is the build my DWF-Prime uses and it is largely very impressive and fun to play. Of course, half the time you'll get your back cored out while trying to catch up to the rest of your team but if that doesn't happen magic occurs..

Started to play this again, first time since beta. Due to what ever loving reason it means I have a rank of low 5, which has major upsides but it also makes me question humanity.

E.g. Just was in a match with a King Crab equipped with 6 MG's, a Streak SRM, Med Pulse Laser LRG Pulse Laser and a LRM 20 - who after our team died seemed to think the best way to play was shoot MG's at people from 500m's.

Just bear in mind the Steam launch brought a lot of new people in and while the tutorial just about teaches players how to walk in a straight line and fire their guns, there's gently caress all that teaches you how to build a mech or much about weapon ranges and poo poo. These people may suck, but they suck because you have to google this poo poo to learn it.

Yeah I picked up the Hunchback-4J to elite that line, and it's pretty fun how quickly that thing can barf out tons of Artemis LRMs. On the other hand, it barfs out literal tons of missiles very fast, and then I run out of ammo and have an awkward rest of the round playing half a 4P.

This is the build I've been using, I think I'm going to cut heatsinks for more ammo, trying to find the balance between being cool enough to be effective when I lose the missiles vs. having enough ammo I hopefully never get to that point. Also whenever I lose the hunch side, running around with a single ML is :flaccid: as gently caress.

I don't own any good mechs with viable ballistic builds, is the 4G with AC/20 the better bet to finish off the hunchbacks?
E: Something like this 4G? Please tell me if/why this is garbage, thanks.

Bought myself a HBK-4SP the other night, ran it stock and actually had tons of fun with it. I definitely want to keep the 2x SRM6 on it, I've seen a few builds that substitute in 2x LLas for 2 of the MLas. I think just about every build I've seen bumps up the engine to a std250. Any recommendations?

I'd try 5ml and 2 asrm4 then just go round executing people, it's a nasty pinpoint alpha.

I'd make a Youtube tutorial but I'm sure there are already good ones out there, plus all I'd tell people to do is just throw some LPLs and SRMs on it then buy a Shadow Cat.

That 4G looks a little slow. It might be better to switch to MLas instead of MPLs. Then all your weapons hit at the same range, and you can maybe spring for a slightly bigger engine?

I found this old 4G build floating around on mechspecs

That's pretty much been the standard 4g build since forever. Only variation is some people replace the medium in the head with a 4th ton of AC/20 ammo.

Yeah I just left the default engine to be cheap in case I hate the thing and want to sell it off soon as I get all the basic skills. Actually though, I still don't really know which engines are common enough to warrant buying, so maybe a 250 is a good buy anyhow?

Also is 3 tons of ammo really enough?

That's what I was thinking when I was looking at it. 21 shots doesn't seem like enough AC/20 ammo for me.

Reztes posted:

Maybe for some people. I'm pretty bad at robots though, so I'd probably bring an extra ton.

Vorenus
Jul 14, 2013
The 4G should run at least 3.5 if not 4 tons of ammo once you're used to playing it. The AC20 is incredibly rapid fire with the quirk, but if you're still on basic skills for it you might go lighter on ammo since you'll die a lot.*

*Assuming you're playing with some level of aggression, as most goons do. In a goon drop you can count on heavier mechs to get most of the enemy attention and effectively shield you, in pub drops you should count yourself lucky if your assaults don't strip your rear CT while using you as cover. The appropriate response to this is of course to hard-check said assault for an XL engine by coring his side torsos.

Am I the only one who thinks that having a JJ on the DWF makes a huge difference? The average travel speed seems to improve a lot since one can take shortcuts instead of walking around every pebble. Even one JJ lifts up that fat rear end quite nicely.

If I could put a single jump jet on every single mech I own I would. It's useful on all maps and the only thing that makes playing on the really cluttered and poorly-built maps (looking at you Viridian Bog) bearable. On clan mechs is it worth the tonnage, since I'm pretty sure you get locked into more than just one? Your call.

I need to do something with this MAD-5M for mastery purposes, so how's this for a 5M build: http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=347&l=9e4e8408f540395a6a117845ea5330fbc5a9d089

Quirks are honestly pretty terrible on this (-10% laser duration, -5% energy heat generation), so I figured I'd just do a repeat of my 5M but swap the ASRM-6s for a single AC/20 since it's a nice bit of heat-free burst to go with the MPLs and means I can still do something when both my arms blow up.

e; alternatively, this means I have a dead side and some decent alpha at range, plus something to do when I run out of AC/20 ammo: http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=347&l=729ad62c40c804376c46fccc899163fea88b9c86 It's only about 10% less "sustained DPS" on smurfy (however that's calculated) and makes me better at peaking, too. I'm honestly leaning more towards this than the first build, it seems better on paper.

those are nice quirks... shorter burn means faster damage since it does its damage in a shorter time. and the -5% heat is handy.

Yeah, it's just not a whole lot of a bonus and it's only to lasers, instead of there being ballistic quirks. More mediocre than terrible, though, sure.

Move the 1/2 ton from the leg to the CT. Less chance for it getting you superdead...

Or drop the 1/2, all together and give that left arm a little more sheild armor. From those shots from underneath.

Ere to fix yer gubbinz
I've been mucking about with my Pulse Drill XL MAD-5M for something a little more Tanky. Left mouse, left side lasers, right mouse, right side lasers, decent mobility, works for poking but can pick up momentum and take some real punishment in a push. I've even found me a MAD-3R I'm happy to drive. Basically I've pulled all the XL engines off my Marauders now, my one complaint is that the 3R has no jumpjets which I really like for mobility.

Of course all of my robot builds are pretty homogeneous, built around AC20s, SRMs and Lasers - When they inevitably gently caress SRMs again I'll end up taking another extended hiatus.

Ere to fix yer gubbinz
The CTF-0XP is new since I last played and has ECM and all, but it's still a Cataphract and suffers from having the Cataphract's hitbox. It's probably the only one that interests me, except I've got better Heavy brawlers in my stable.

It's a 25 ton mech that gives up 4 tons to equipment that you mostly cannot benefit from.

It's a light mech that is too slow to evade weapons fire from larger mechs.

It's a light mech with too few weapon slots to boat multiple light weapons.

It doesn't have enough available tonnage to mount large weapons to offset its lack of weapon slots.

It's a light mech with all of its guns in its arms.

Its geometry doesn't give it any ability to significantly roll damage or hide vulnerable locations.

It can take ECM, but in order to do so you have to completely give up the ability to take any weapons in that location.

It has no quirks of any significance to offset its massive drawbacks.
