GrandpaPants posted:Can anyone recommend any good albums that strongly evoke the sea or have a maritime or nautical feel to them? I realize that that's fairly vague and I can't even articulate why anything would give off that feeling besides maybe some subconscious suggestion from the album or band name. I've been listening to The End of the Ocean's Pacific/Atlantic a lot and I kinda want more of that. Of Sinking Ships gets sorta close at times, but doesn't quite hit it just right. Bit late but Ortega, Post Metal band from Holland have a maritime aesthetic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDffjsI8Y6s. In a similar vein, the Mastodon album Leviathan does the hunting the whale thing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vs2ZsxPMdL4 Both feature vocals to varying degrees of melody

I go back and forth as to whether I like the first or second more. But they're one of my favorite active post metal groups so unless they release a Christian rock album they really can't do wrong in my eyes. They did link to/tour with these guys, might hit the spot while we wait for their third album: http://telepathyband.bandcamp.com/.

Finally got around to hooking up a turntable so I could crack this thing open: Holy crap what an amazing compilation. The track list ticks all the right boxes and the included booklet has all sorts of old photos and memorabilia in it. Jehde fucked around with this message at 20:20 on Dec 16, 2015 |

I like EITS and I think that track is promising. The last two albums were soundtracks and I didn't like either much, so I'll be glad to hear the new album. I am guaranteed to buy it anyway. A tiny bit of good news to offset the massive downer of losing Bowie...

So, now that 2015 is over what were everyone's favourites from last year? Top 3 for me were We Lost The Sea - Departure Songs, In Each Hand a Cutlass - The Kraken and Tangled Thoughts of Leaving - Yield to Despair.

Mogwai's got a new album coming out on April Fool's Day, same day as the Explosions In The Sky album. Maybe they're both trolling us. Album's called Atomic. Pitchfork posted:The record comprises reworked versions of their soundtrack for Storyville - Atomic: Living in Dread and Promise, a documentary on the dawning of the atomic age that aired last year on the BBC. I dig the first track of this more than I dig the first track from the EitS album, FWIW.

It's probably not a troll, it's a reworked version of the soundtrack they did for the Channel 4 documentary, which I still need to watch. Digging the preview track though, kind of a mix of Les Revenants and BoC's Tomorrow's Harvest.

It reminds me of when their last album was first announced and Trembling Hands was the first song shared from that which ended up not being representative of the rest of the album. This song didn't do much for me but hopefully I'll like the other songs off the album.

Sorni Nai, The Kraken, Salome. It was not a good post-rock year for me personally, but there's a lot to look forward to in 2016: Pirate Ship Quintet, Latitudes, pg.lost, Tides from Nebula just off the top of my head.

Man, Old Sunlight is great. They really jacked the tempo the hell up, or I guess got rid of a lot of the slower textural passages so it sounds a lot more intense. If it was anyone else I'd probably be mad at them but they just do it so well.

Hey guys, a blog I contribute to, https://echoesanddust.com, is looking for math rock and post rock writers at the moment, we've realised we've gotten a bit black metal heavy and we're trying to rebalance our output. You don't need to submit a writing sample or anything, you just have to want to do it and feel like you can sound the least bit intelligent for a few paragraphs writing about music. The perks: FREE albums BEFORE they're officially released! We're big enough that we get thousands and thousands of PR submissions looking for reviews. You get full freedom to pick what you do and don't want to review. (I may be sitting on the new Yndi Halda right now) FREE concert tickets and press passes! I've seen so many gigs now just by paying in reviews. It's awesome. Sometimes you even get to interview bands! The drawbacks: You don't get paid, so you'll still need a proper job to support your drug habit and rapid slide into alcoholism. If you're keen or want information, email Dan, the editor, at editor@echoesanddust.com. Oh and if you sign on there's no reason you'd be locked into doing post rock or math rock. I was brought on to review post rock but I've reviewed a fair bit of indie pop and noise as well. Cymbal Monkey fucked around with this message at 19:13 on Jan 28, 2016 |
