It looks like the want to bring a USL team to San Diego. There might be the possibility to build a dual use 35K stadium for that with SDSU.

Good morning!
Losing a team loving sucks. What's even worse is when it's all dragged out, and you hope and hope and then wonder why you did afterward.

Then, of course, come the years of, "poo poo, are we going to get another one?"

Suffice to say I'm not much of an NBA guy anymore.

Oh, I just looked it up. It's bad. It's basically AAA MLS which probably means it's really like pickup in a park as far as the EPL is concerned.

Born & raised in SD and I would mark the gently caress out so hard for a San Diego Raiders if that happened.

Some people root for teams because there's an element (albeit retarded) of civic pride attached to it. Yeah yeah, ignore the transient nature of these franchises, it's innate to a lot of people.

I always make this comparison; we don't have an NHL team here and when I started caring about hockey in '93 I picked the Canucks. I am a fan, I have apparel, watch their games on Center Ice, etc....but if they ever pull their heads out of their asses long enough to win a Cup I'm not going apeshit, it'll be more like a rich happiness than a spaz attack like what would happen if any major franchise in this godforsaken city won a title. And it's all because I don't have a real attachment to them, can't claim I grew up there (as is almost always the first explanation for why someone roots for a team not where they live), haven't felt that depressed camaraderie after bad losses with friends and fellow bar patrons. It's just not a full attachment.

But if Mark Davis moves that 800 million dollar haircut and Dodge Caravan to Qualcomm? INNNNN.

But Qualcom is like a 3 minute trolley ride from SDSU and there's a station literally on campus and in the Q parking lot so it's pretty drat convenient already.
Like I'm pretty sure you can get from SDSU to the Q in the same time it takes a USC student to walk from their dorm to the Coliseum

I'm the opposite. I was born and raised in Palm Springs. For those of you that don't know, it's about two hours northeast of San Diego in the California desert.

My grandparents bought season tickets when the Chargers moved to San Diego in 1961. I was raised as a Chargers fan, but my MLB team has always been the Angels (Orange county) because they were always on TV. My NHL team is the Ducks, mostly because of the movies and they were also always on TV. So I'm not a San Diegan, and more of my teams are closer to orange county/los angeles than San Diego.

I root for the team, not the city. I'm not gonna lie and say that proximity doesn't have anything to do with it, because if the Chargers moved to St. Louis, the passion probably WOULD die down. I'm more upset that my team is leaving because I had season tickets and they played a mile away from my house. I'll still root for them, I'll still probably go to a game a year up in Los Angeles. I don't feel like the team has personally betrayed me, but I totally get that mindset from people that were born and raised in this city.

I'm also like 99.8% sure they'll win a super bowl in 5 years after leaving because, again, San Diego cannot have nice things. It's why cte and cancer killed our two hometown heroes. Some deity was given the option to ordain SD with the choices of good weather, world-class burritos & beer, and winning sports teams, and could only pick two. If the Padres ever win a world series the next day a 10.1 earthquake will level the earth and somehow manage to trigger a new ice age focused entirely south of the 78 and north of the 54.

2 hours away isn't that bad, we have a ton of Rams/Bears fans that live here 2 hours away from St Louis/Chicago who have season tickets. Sunday just becomes 100% that football game. There is no go to the game and get other stuff done.

Fake Edit: not that that makes it any better your team moved, just tossing similar things out there.

OB is the last community in San Diego that would accept a big rear end stadium and all the headache that comes with it. I guess you could bulldoze the sports arena valley view casino center and put a stadium there, but I don't see how that's any more desirable than the existing Qualcom site in Mission Valley. Qualcom is really in an ideal place already; it's at the intersection of 3 major highways, there is a trolley stop right in the parking lot, and it's pretty central to the suburban sprawl where fans live.

A stadium by OB (you're probably thinking that land immediately around Sea World) would be built like a normal stadium and end up looking like the one in the CGI renders on the last page because it's all marsh and would sink into the earth with velocity.

Oh, also, it's protected wetlands as well as a city-owned aquatic park.
