Of course all the calculations have to assume every single dollar has equal utility In practice, 100 million dollars is probably not 10 times better than winning 10 million dollars.

Using the calculations derived in this thread last night, I bet my dad $200 that at least 10 of his 25 lottery tickets would have no matches I didn't actually take his money, but I could've.

And don't get me wrong- I realize that some people play for the short-lived thrill and daydreaming. But not the people at the office. They get seriously angry when they don't win. They throw up their hands in the air and start sulking for the rest of the week, as if they "almost" won. When they were discussing a previous lottery (for $60 million) I overheard one of them say, "One in 90 million odds? That's actually not too bad." Out of curiosity, is there ever a scenario where buying into a game reduces each successive person's chance of winning? So like buying more tickets lowers the chances of any of those tickets being winning tickets?

Another guy who has a wife fall for a MLM scheme My [32/m] wife [30/f] will not stop buying Lularoe clothes online. Continues buying after promising to stop quote:My wife is generally not a big wasteful spender but ever since she found out about Lularoe clothing "parties" she has spent over $1,000 on leggings and shirts in the past month. I've asked her to stop and she promised she would but every couple of days there are more charges. They aren't even cute or classic. They have weird prints that will be out of style in 8 months. That's what kills me about it- if these were classic dresses that were always in style it might be okay. Remember feather earrings? Remember lace dresses? Yeah, this will go out of style, too. Are lace dresses really out of style?

More like $2000. Her friend had bought it that day. I can appreciate a nice handbag, but I think after the $300 mark the quality isn't going to be that much better.

I can see up to around $1000 for like, a handmade leather bag with really good hardware. I wouldn't purchase one, but I can see how that wouldn't be a totally insane thing. After that, I think you're paying for the brand.

Chinese people just loving looooove gambling. Birkin bags aren't even impressive they are just dumb square leather bags that are heavy and awkward to hold.

EugeneJ posted:...this is actually a good deterrent for gambling and I wonder why other countries haven't thought of it In places with government run casinos, there is no reason to want an entrance fee because while the cash ends up in the same place, people happily plunk it into the slot machine and get really, really mad when taxes are increased. Enough people gambling and you can even cut taxes to make yourself look really good in the eyes of the voting public.
