literally everything about it is bad

acer
amd
not portable (15.6'' laptop lol)
undersized scrub tier hdd
undersized ram
underpowered battery
100% likelihood of it being made of brittle plastic that will immediately break (but i already said acer)
100% likelihood of the screen being some 1366*768 pos for idiots that will make you barf (1600*900 hd+ is the minimum adequate resolution, get 1920*1080 fhd if you can)

buying a macbok/thinkpad/hp elitebook/dell latitude refurb or getting one on ebay is more likely to get you a needs suiting computer

the best clone utility is booting a random linux live usb and use dd (or ddrescue if poo poo's hosed up). then afterwards use fstrim if poo poo's on an ssd.

there's a lot of overengineered cloning utilities out there.

12'' is ok if small
14'' is good
17'' is a desktop replacement boat anchor (get a mini itx PC instead)
15.6'' is borderline because it doesn't comfortably fin within smaller bags

speaking of sizes, i got a request from a colleague with some funky specs

dude needs a bunch of monitors but desk space is at a premium

i thought about buying a bunch of 15.6 laptop panels and adding in control boards, but i'm keeping that as plan b because i'd rather keep diy projects out of the work environment

are 15ish inch monitors even still being made in higher resolutions?

your problem is that you buy cheap lovely craptops in that case

enjoy thinkpad l series superiority adequacy instead: slightly less light than a t450s and not quite as durable, but you can get the base model with an upgrade to the 1080p ips screen at like $700.

You can get displaylink monitors that go on a USB 3 port. They're kinda pricy though (non-poo poo ones start around $200). They're literally laptop screens in a case. Displaylink is kind of weird though in that all the display's graphics are onboard and if the manufacturer is lovely you can have trouble adjusting colours because they didn't make a colour adjustment menu for the screen.

Note that you could also buy him some chinese cintiq clone graphics tablet (huion and bosto have some decent models, read reviews first to avoid bad surprises) and just not use the part where people can draw on it. Screens are often adequate and are more likely to have colour controls.

In addition you want one normal monitor just for diagnostics purposes because displaylink only switches on when windows has loaded drivers so good luck booting from grub or reading error messages during boot.

Alternatively just say gently caress it and find some refurbished 1600x1200 screens.

e: good reference setup to start modifying from would be 1x Dell IPS screen (older 4:3 or 16:10 model so it's not ludicrously wide) or something like a refurb HP LP2065 (20'' nominally but being 4:3 not actually that wide), 2x displaylink screen that's not totally poo poo dangling off the sides or 2x graphics tablet dangling off the sides (ideally on a 3x vesa mount).

that's actually what we're going for, in a 3x1 array

it's kind of my fault, depending on the season i have either a 3x1 or 5x1 portrait array on my desk, but i have a really large desk and a back wall so i can drop 23" monitors on there without a problem, and since i'm a good 3-4 feet from them it's not crazy invasive

he has a more sensibly sized desk and a neighbor opposite to him, so he can't get too crazy depth wise, so he'll have to go with vertical monitor stands or something

CrazyLittle posted:

that's an option, but separate portrait oriented panels work well for the work flow (full page document editing on #1, contract review or financial documents on #2, whatever else on #3 in half screen sized snaps) and if possible i'd rather not have to spend hours on end playing tech support for custom window snaps with such a large surface

quick side note i can't recommend gridmove enough for custom snap points

heh i'm 80% sure that driving 3 of these would be a bad idea

considered that, but a lot of them have huge bezels or other undesirable features. it's really weird, there's a bunch of displays around 7-10" for photography and graphic tablets, a bunch of 19"+ monitors but not much in between

i suppose that no one in tyool 2016 uses small desk monitors anymore

Yeah it's either really small displays for things half a step away from embedded or big ~home entertainment~ and ~office productivity~ displays. If you want a mid-size display you'll pay out of your nose because it's a specialist item for weirdos. Pretty much the only widespread use case I can think of is cash register displays (lol $500 for a 15.6" 1366x766 or 1024x768 dogshit monitor in tyool 2015).

Comedy option: Build a wall of raspberry pi displays and drive them over a terrifying number of HDMI ports.

Define "sensible desk space" though, for me a sensible desk can fit like 6-10 24'' monitors in vertical orientation side by side.

could you describe the office/setup/dimensions a little more? and what the actual need is?

if this is a guy who wants more monitors but has a really tiny office, maybe what he needs first is a larger office???

also depending on how much space is available, maybe check into those new 34" ultra wide displays, like this LG model. 3440x1440 in one package could use less space than separate monitors while still offering huge resolution

if desk space is the only concern, what about using 3 normal monitors (20"-24"), center one is sitting on the desk and the outer two on monitor arms? that way you dont have to worry about them hanging off the side of the desk or whatever, and they can just be wherever they need to be

but yeah one large high-res monitor plus whatever software to be able to snap windows where you want them would be an alternate solution and require less futzing assuming the software is good

yes

buy a samsung 850 evo (the one true consumer ssd) and use the free data migration software it comes with

if you hate yourself and buy a lovely ssd or if you hate money and buy an intel ssd you can use macrium reflect to put an image on the ssd

I need a new router. What's the current hot goodness? I was thinking of getting one of those mikrotik routers, but i don't know how much I would enjoy messing around with stuff. i figure it might be fun for a while but ultimately annoying, idk. also, depends on how good the devices are.

would prefer something that support tomato or dd-wrt since i like some of the features I can find on them that don't seem to be available on other router OS' (like dnsmasq)
