Vader released another cover album late last year, featuring a lot of lesser known/less popular bands, about half in polish. I had no idea. But I loving love Vader so I have no idea how I missed this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhyI07PhRFI

Vulture Culture posted:Clearly you are unaware that Burzum's Det som engang var cover is the art from D&D's Temple of Elemental Evil No, I am clearly aware of the fact that metal bands are massive nerds when it comes to RPGs and other forms of geek culture. Just from the top of my head, Blind Guardian made a concept album about Silmarillion, Bolt Thrower did WH40k, Iced Earth did Spawn, Hawkwind did Elric of Melnibone, Cult of Luna did Nils Holgersson and god/satan knows how many more. Ordered a nostalgia book which I got yesterday about a classic Swedish RPG company (Äventyrsspel) and a quote from the book says "And then suddenly members of Entombed and Sator started sitting around in our offices". It is not really a complaint since some of those albums are pretty good, but more of an observation.

Slough Feg did a concept album based on the Traveller RPG; and then of course there is Summoning which is more or less all Tolkien all the time. Lovecraft has been used by more bands than one can mention, from Metallica on to more obscure stuff like The Lamp of Thoth. And so on and so forth.

Since it's now on topic, I wrote a guide to H.P. Lovecraft's influence on metal. I think it's pretty comprehensive, although it's limited to bands of some note.

Polish black metal with cool atomsphere and chanting, sounds contrived but it's actually really good and dare I say it, original sounding. Released in 2015 but I totally missed it. Batushka - Litourgiya http://witchinghourproductions.bandcamp.com/album/litourgiya Favourite Songs: http://witchinghourproductions.bandcamp.com/track/yekteniya-2 http://witchinghourproductions.bandcamp.com/track/yekteniya-3 ( the riff starting at 1:33 ) http://witchinghourproductions.bandcamp.com/track/yekteniya-8 ( beautiful slower tempo start, and again a killer riff starting at 1:50 ) The songs vary enough that you kind of get a mixed bag, sometimes it sounds like Blut Aus Nord, sometimes it sounds like Drudkh ( definitely that kind of "mounrful" sounding riffing ), sometimes it's kinda doomy, sometimes it's more atmospherey, sometimes there's weird warbling polish singing, sometimes there's bells being shaken ( I guess this is a Polish church thing? I have no idea ). They're all good individually but it's totally one of those albums that gets REALLY good if you listen to it from start to finish. Have fun trying to order the Vinyl from the Polish-only label. Even with chrome/translate it took me 30 minutes. TollTheHounds fucked around with this message at 01:32 on Jan 16, 2016 |

Destruction's releasing their new album in May. Considering The Least Successful Human Cannonball, any other album they will ever release will be better than that.

Went to see Insomnium last night. They were pretty tight, played a lot of newer material, which is great because Shadows of the Dying Sun is my favourite album of theirs. Some pics of the event on event FB page. Anyway, the organizers are bringing Swallow the Sun over next month. Where do I start with those guys? I heard a few tracks here and there but nothing caught my ear.

All this "DT" talk keeps confusing me because I've only ever used "DT" to refer to Dark Tranquillity. The Capitulator posted:Went to see Insomnium last night. Insomnium are great but I just cannot get into Swallow the Sun. I like bands that use parts of doom but I think Swallow the Sun is straight up Doom and it is so drat boring I just can't get going. I've tried a few songs for every album and I just end up clicking through trying to find a catchy riff or SOMETHING that might keep my interest and eventually just give up. So if someone else has a "killer" Swallow the Sun song I'd love to know what it is. Could just be they're not for me as well but I feel like I might be missing out.

Mesarthim are finally taking pre-orders for the physical release of Isolate! If you pre-order you get 3 euros off, and if you're one of the first 100 LP orders you get the bonus song "Suffocate" as a CD single w/ it's own cardboard sleeve ( it won't fit on the LP ). http://www.avantgardemusic.com/wordpress/?p=2481 I just pre-ordered the bundle because this is one of my favourite albums of 2015 if not the past decade, and the shirt design is actually really cool and I won't be embarrassed to wear it outside ( as long as no one asks me what it means ). If you've been living under a rock that doesn't include news about beautiful electro space black atmospheric not-shoe-gaze metal, here's a re-post of how awesome this album is: Full Album: http://mesarthim.bandcamp.com/releases My favourite songs: http://mesarthim.bandcamp.com/track/osteopenia Sad/depressing [edit - initially, then it gets kind of...triumphant?
