My dad is currently battling with the VA to get financial compensation for his cancer, which his oncologist suspected was caused by Agent Orange. The doc and my parents were working really well together and making progress when, out of nowehre, the oncologist had a heart attack and died overnight a week before the hearing.

That hearing was last Thursday and the VA told my parents to expect an answer in 6-8 weeks. The bad news is most cases of intestinal cancer aren't accepted as being from AO. The other bad news is that it has spread to his liver and a few other spots, but at least liver cancer is on the AO "approved" list.

Basically, cancer sucks.

My wife's memorial service was today (we decided to have it after the holidays so that anyone coming in from out of town wouldn't get raped by holiday travel prices, and a friend got married last week and we didn't want to compete with that). The honor guard had a real bugler, so that was cool.

And then I got to watch a SGT and a SSG gently caress up folding the flag so bad that I drat near shoved one aside and said "gently caress you, I'll do it: Pull it TIGHT dipshit."

I'm probably going to have to re fold the loving thing so it's not so jacked up.

Un ironically I wish you would have. I did one memorial as a specialist and I practiced my rear end off folding that flag. If those two assholes didn't or just didn't care, gently caress them. Not just because it's you, but in general. There are very few things I like about the military, but rendering proper respect to the dead is one of them. It's also why I don't go to "mandatory" memorial services for people I don't know. When my buddy had his, I had to listen to some human being SFCs talk about how they didn't want to be there and how it sucked and they had some email or whatever to write. It took literally all my restraint to not fly back there and hit them again and again and again. After that, I decided never to disrespect the people who knew or cared about the person by being one of those individuals.

Hopefully. You're holding up. Let us know if you need anything.

No,mthough she has almost burnt poo poo beyond recognition, let me get away with smoking while my dad was away when I was a teen and in school, and under seasoned a bunch of stuff, but mostly it's normal. She relies on texture.

Yes we've already had the "could you eat poop?" Conversation. Yes, she could possibly.

Yes, I've already asked her if she could pick up radio signals with her metal plate. No, sadly, she can't.

Yes, free for all with flatulence. Though she wins all the time because she's super into that organic free moving compost farm this eat that movement.

She enjoys texture and spice with foods. It means more now than it did.

Also, she glitters her shoes and talks to birds. Not like having a conversation like they're talking back, but like how you would a kid I guess.

Also, re: McNally's wife's funeral: Burn down everything, loving Christ. Since she was part of an active unit, were they members of that unit doing the ceremonies? Because if so, they need to be tossed in a goddamn furnace for that poo poo.

I know with my pokey reserve unit we got called on to provide services for all manner of funerals and what not, but they were pretty much always for retirees and other geriatrics and what not. We were generally pretty well practiced on the stuff though, because gently caress loving up someone's final send off. That poo poo is inexcusable.

When I was doing predeployment with the Army at Riley back in '08 they trotted all 150 or so AF/Navy dudes to go to a memorial for two dudes who just got killed. Basically we just kinda stood awkwardly while this Lt Col got up and gave a terrible, generic speech in a clipped, monotone "I have better things to be doing" voice. They were videotaping the whole thing to send to the guys' families. At the end of the speech the Lt Col finally looks up from the loving green pocket notebook he's reading off of, looks straight into the camera and says "Duty First."

I never wanted to dick-punch an officer so badly in my entire life.

Exactly. gently caress that poo poo. Also I wouldn't have added the duty first to the video if I had made it because standards, and the last thing you'd want to hear is how duty is the trump card to the family who just lost someone. He still said it though which would make him look like an rear end in a top hat regardless.

At my buddies memorial, (his name was Shiver, like shy-ver) our CSM kept calling him driver because he drove the CSM around as the driver and apparently never thought to learn his name.

That was a rough time. One of my only friends dying then another going to jail for 4 years on assault. He had to go to the memorial in handcuffs.

One of my Aussie Army buddies got his arm cut up badly by a fuckhead marine who took a kabar to a pub in Sydney, got drunk, dropped his beer and thought an offer of a free round was grounds for a knifing.
loving lucky MPs just happened to be passing by when the minor riot broke out as the marines pals reacted badly to two of my friends mates holding said marine and loosening a couple of teeth.

Looking into my family history I have a great great cousin or something who enlisted in the Army back in 1918, in Melbourne, and was in for 2 days before being dischanrged for having 6% vision in one eye, and 6.5% in the other. Fucker was blind as a post.
He turned up again in Sydney a week later and enlisted again. Was in for 5 days before being discharged. They too, discovered he was blind.

6 months later in the Queensland town of Roma, he joins the army for a third time. He's in for 10 days, when they do the eye exam and... yep, discharged.

It would seem he gave up after that.

Just read the whole thread - a hell of a ride. Give those shitheads what they deserve McNally.

I was in the Australian Army reserve, 5/6 RVR during the late 90s and early 2000s. Dumbest thing I ever took part in was a parachute jump into what had been a dry salt lake, before the drought broke and turned it into a foot of incredibly salty water over a foot of salt mush. Fuckwitted officer had failed to read a weather alert for the area indicating the potential of flash flooding and given us the go ahead. All 24 Austeyr rifles from my platoon, as well as every single metal item we had on us was rusted basically instantly, and we wrote off all of the parachute silk and belts/boots as well. I can only imagine he got a medal of some sort.
