It seems odd that I have virtually no metal in my library, I do listen to rock I guess, and some lovely indie stuff. A lot of my musical ventures for the last year or two have been artists associated with QotSA. Finding music is hard without a starting point I guess, and since there's so many goddamn subgenres of metal it's puzzling.

Driving straight into the really extreme stuff like grindcore or brutal death metal probably isn't a good idea, but apart from that, what do you like? These are all going to be incredibly random recommendations. Melodic newer stuff? Symphony X might be something for you? Stoner metal? Try Mos Generator or Saint Vitus. Old school Swedish melodic death metal? "Slaughter of the soul" by At The Gates, "The jester race" by In Flames and "The gallery" by Dark tranquillity are the go to albums. Borderline death core, but with actual talent? Fallujah are pretty good.
