Job Seeker

Location: Telecommute, looking to relocate to Portland, OR

Education: BS in Finance

Experience: 6.5 years. 3 years of IT experience is in client services, databases, technical support, and helpdesk. My most recent positions were client facing as a consultant. Previous clients and projects included Fortune 100 companies to implement software supporting large events (such as conferences and trade shows) and SaaS implementations with the goal of configuring and tailoring software specifically for a client's business needs. Prior to that, was with the federal government in bank examination for 3.5 years. This work was mostly credit and financial analysis, so plenty of Excel, some SQL and VBA, and presentations to board directors and C-level staff.

Looking for: Similar client facing roles as my previous jobs, something in professional services or even a post-sales engineer role. Business analyst positions would be good too.

Hi all,
My firm is in the midst of a hiring push so I thought I'd post again on BFC to see if there are any interested candidates. I work at an economic consulting firm, and we're looking to hire analysts (i.e. recentish grads with BA/BS degrees in Econ/business/stats/math/engineering) and associates (i.e Econ and finance PhDs or MBAs) for openings in our NYC and DC offices. Googling economic consulting will probably give you a good idea about what I do, but basically we do economics for lawyers.

Two things:
For analysts: ~3.5 GPA or greater
For associates: top ~20 program or better.

Shoot me a PM with your resume/questions if you're interested.

JOB OPENING(S)

What: I do freelance work for a firm that offers scientific writing services and help for researchers who are non-native English speakers. For my job I receive manuscripts intended for publication in academic journals, written in English by authors who are not themselves native English speakers. I edit them to make them readable, and sometimes do some basic document formatting for them, and send them back. The firm is currently looking for editors for Physics, Chemistry and Medicine articles, and need Physics editors in particular.

Who: There's an online application you can find here. You can also PM me if you have questions, I have an e-mail contact for the person in charge of the listing but was told that the online application is the better route to go.

How: From memory, the only real qualifications they asked from me were a degree in a relevant field (for example I have a BA and MS in Chemistry and work in their Materials Science group) and "mastery" of the English language. My interview consisted of a multiple-choice quiz to make sure I could edit properly, and having not written in any scientific capacity for two years I only missed one question. They will ask if you yourself have published anything, maybe they will pay you more if you have but they hired me even though I haven't published anything.

Where: Everything is done remotely. So long as you have an internet connection, can edit Word documents (and the occasional Powerpoint deck), and can field the occasional e-mail from your manager, you're golden.

Why: Honestly, the pay isn't great and I take slight umbrage at having my English writing and editing critiqued by non-native speakers, possibly due to my suppressed racist tendencies (the firm is headquartered overseas). But you can set your own hours and take on as much or as little work as you want, as all assignments are voluntary. If you're like me and have a desk job where you have a lot of free time, and need an excuse to spend less time on SA, this is a great way to make a few extra bucks. In my opinion, however, this is not a sustainable full-time job unless you are really busting your rear end (or don't have to pay rent or other living expenses).

When: Now, I guess.

It's not for everyone (lots of conflict resolution, influencing without authority, deferring credit to the broader cross-functional team, and no functional area ownership), but it is a highly rewarding job for the right person (significant exposure to/interaction with virtually every function at the site, including senior management, you get to fix a bunch of broken business processes and you DO get credit for that). JOB SEEKER:

Current location: Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Really wouldn't mind relocating to someplace with a little more going on.

Experience: 10+ years in retail hardware sales (I started at the family store when I was little.) 3 years teaching ESL abroad. 6 years teaching college English, mostly online. Currently an insurance processor (I know beneficiary and title work, and I'm learning about indexing at the moment.)

Education: Master's degree in English (perfectly willing to pretend I don't have this.) Undergrad in English with minor in professional writing. Currently working on an associate's degree in Computer Science. I can handle simple Java/SQL/HTML/CSS, and more than simple with appropriate training.

Not interested in: Teaching English in an academic setting. Retail customer service. Mindlessly pushing buttons (mindfully pushing buttons is perfectly okay)

Interested in: Teaching business English for a company. Entry-level programming opportunities, or related opportunities in sales/business logic/communications, especially if the software is related to hardware sales or insurance. JOB SEEKER

My Experience: 10+ years in customer service experience, 2+ years in phone-related troubleshooting and technical support, experience in HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Visual Basic 6 (Yeah, my current job actually uses it). I'm currently working at a print vendor as a customer/technical support role that combines dealing with upset customers, programming, and small levels of graphic design.

I've got a BA in Psychology with a minor in Sociology but I have an A+ certification from the year 2000. So basically I don't have the school-degree for technical work, but I do have a cert to back up the fact that I'm at least basically, conceptually competent. I'm willing to get more certs as well, I just need to know which ones. I'm great at working under supervision, on my own, or even supervising others. I can get along with others very well and pick things up pretty quickly.

What I'm looking for: Something entry level, or near entry level. Anything that will help me build skills I need to keep progressing. I'd love something that could train me to be better than I am right now- either software or hardware related since I have an aptitude in both but don't excel in either just yet.

What I'm NOT looking for: A dead-end job, sales, or anything I'm HOPELESSLY under-qualified for.

Where I live: Lilburn, GA (near Stone Mountain, GA)

Where I'm looking: The metro Atlanta area, preferrably the northeast side of the perimeter. If it's a good enough job I won't complain, though. Currently I have a 60-90 minute commute to Alpharetta. Ideally I'd like to drive less.

When I can start: I'd like to give a two week's notice, a little more if at all possible. I really like my co-workers and company, and would love to give them a bit of time to hire and train someone to replace me.

Requirements: Minimum salary of $30-40k and some possibility for upward mobility are my main "musts".

Can be reached via: PM, erion42@gmail.com

Also, if there are any specific skills people can recommend I wouldn't mind picking up and completing a Udemy course (since they're so drat cheap right now (unless there's the general consensus that Udemy is poo poo)).

BIG TEN PRIDE
JOB POSTING

Location: Chicago

Position not yet filled, but further applications are closed. Got a couple strong-looking goon candidates to go with the Indeed ones. Thanks goons.
Role: Entry-level Finance and IT Associate

Details: Job post here

Basically, it's a small office of half a dozen people so there isn't enough work to merit a true IT manager, but there's still some IT stuff that needs to get done if the server crashes or someone needs to install a font or whatever tech issues come up during the day. There's no need to be a master sysadmin or anything, in fact you don't need even need to know the answer to every tech question; just know what the answer should look like and how to find it. Another facet is helping with accounting tasks such as tracking down customers that aren't paying, matching up invoices, and running payroll. You will learn how to use QuickBooks, the ubiquitous accounting tool which is a great marketable skill to have.

The technology and finance sides meet with your work on our FileMaker database. It's a really powerful software tool that you can use to do just about anything. We've already put it to use eliminating a couple giant time-sucking, paper-wasting processes and the goal is to keep up that trend with accounting processes. Eliminate your own busywork, make your job easier! The FileMaker work is the best part of the job (in my opinion) as it involves really creative problem solving with a lot of autonomy as to how you solve a given problem. You are not expected to come aboard with prior knowledge, but you will be given time to learn FileMaker and it is extremely important that you are interested in learning to program the scripts. There might be paid one-on-one training time for it, but that I cannot guarantee.

The position is hourly*, and pays about $17/hr, possibly more depending on the candidate. The position is entry level, and I really mean it so 0 full-time work experience is totally fine and recent grads are encouraged to apply. Ideally the candidate will have some relevant experience such as balancing the family company's books in the summer, working for the student IT help desk, programming their TI-83+ for fun, or similar. What we are really looking for is someone that is generally good at numbers, comfortable with all sorts of technology, and wants to learn scripting.

* = This is an office job working regular business hours. There is no shift scheduling or anything like that. In fact you even get 8 paid hours for major holidays that fall on weekdays so for example the past Christmas and New Year's were both paid out at 8 hours each. Also no one is going to bark at you because you came in 10 minutes late or anything, everyone in the office is really nice!

I like it, what do I do?
If you are interested go ahead and PM me, if you don't have PMs email maymaymachine at hotmail dot com with "forum job" in the subject. If that is not in the subject, I can guarantee I will never see the email! You can also of course just apply straightaway via Indeed.

1. Probably? I'm not involved in the hiring process at all but it couldn't hurt to apply, if the link is active.
2. Depends on the article size. They have a loose expectation of 4000 words/day which I can usually hit, if given an assignment of that length. I typically do my assignments at work when I'm in between tasks, if you had a continuous chunk of time to dedicate to an assignment you could probably crank it out in a few hours, and sometimes they put multiple assignments up for grabs in a given day.
3. $10 for every 1000 words is the base rate I get now, but that can go up or down by as much as 20% depending on how good of a job they think you're doing. After a month or so I figured out what they look for in edits and I'm at that maximum 20% bonus pretty consistently. Maybe they'll give me a raise after a year of freelancing for them but  probably not.

VV Yeah I know, but I also try as much as I can to avoid using my free time for assignments.

Job Seeker
I just graduated last month and now I need a job. Somebody hire me please, I'm broke.

Education
BS in computer science with a mathematics minor.
BFA in art. This focused primarily on ceramics. I also know my way around Photoshop.

I was an honors student and graduated summa cum laude. GPA overall was 3.8/4.0. My CS education was heavily mathematical and also covered AI. I wrote a paper on neural networks in roguelike games. My name is on it so I'll not post a public link but would happily PM one.

Technical Skills
My primary language is C#. This is largely due to convenience; most classes used it and my personal projects have been primarily game-related using Unity. I am also familiar with C++, Java, HTML, CSS, Assembly, JavaScript, Processing, and a smattering of other oddball languages. Right now I'm working on improving my web dev skills.

I also know basic electronics and Arduino. I built a waving robot and a simple circuit that sends MIDI signals back and forth in electronics class.

What I'm Looking For
Programming work primarily. I'm not all that particular as to what. I just like to write code in general. Something that would let me use both degrees would be fantastic but that's probably a stretch. Given my qualifications entry-level is probably the best bet; I don't have the many years of experience for senior positions.

If you have something else you think I could do let me know. I'm interested in a lot of things.

What I'm Not Looking For
Tech support or spec work.

Location
I live in NW PA and would be willing to relocate.

How to Talk To Me

Location: New York, NY

Who we are: Our client is a top European investment bank. My firm, Options Group, is an executive search and strategic consulting firm based in NYC and we have been in business since 1992.

Who we are looking for: C# Developers and Java Developers from top-ranked colleges/universities

Requirements
Core Java Developer:
*Graduated from a top-ranked college/university.
*5-10 years of experience in Core Java
*Excellent problem-solver
*Core Java and Multi-threading
• Deep understanding of core Java libraries such as concurrency, collection and networking
• Demonstrable Java testing skills (e.g. JUnit or Mockito)

C# Developer:
*Graduated from a top-ranked college/university.
- C# server side
- Web front end (Angular JS, HTML5, CSS3)
- 5-15 years of experience (8 years is the sweet spot)
- Agile Methodology
- Ability to show initiative and create solutions in a fluid environment

Why you should work here:

• Client is a top investment bank, recognized and respected worldwide
• You get to live in or next to NYC – amazing and diverse city (I’m a native NYer so I know ;)
• Contract roles often offer higher rates and flexibility to the contractor

* Core Java role:
1. This is part of a 10 billion $ initiative
2. Made up of very smart techies and some have even called it a “true oasis”
3. Group is consolidating 40 risk systems into 1 single platform from end of day to intraday risk assessment.
4. The best person on the team works 9-5.
5. Manager only cares that the job is done and does NOT demand crazy hours.

* C# role:
1. This group has been built out like a tech company, with tech company-like values.
2. They have an organized Scala training program for folks who want to learn the language.

Why you might not want to work here:
• Some of the downsides of working at a large global investment bank
• Cost of living in NYC
• While these are ongoing/long-term contract roles, they are not permanent (They can become perm but are not perm from the get-go).

Interested?
Email me, Vicky, at vchang@optionsgroup.com . I would be very happy to chat about either position. If you have referrals, my firm will pay $500 if your referral is successfully hired (if this is mod-approved). I'll take good energy as well :).

Job posting for Dallas residents

Who: a mediocre corporation (founders of meh.com, former founders of woot.com)

What: Support Engineer (and some other stuff on our jobs page)

What does that mean:
  • Independently verifying bug reports and fixing bugs where you’ll quickly learn about Node.js, Express, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other web development technologies
  • Gathering, organizing, and monitoring data from Salesforce, MongoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch, and more
  • Helping to troubleshoot issues with everything from our supply chain and warehouse management systems to our customer facing websites hosted in the cloud on Microsoft Azure and AWS
  • Administering our Desk.com support system
  • Creating, debugging, and maintaining ETL processes
  • Maintaining and debugging our Raspberry Pi, Google Chrome OS, and Geckoboard company dashboards
  • You’ll be expected to learn the current and future technologies we use to build our ecommerce systems.

It's a super fun company to work for and there is a lot of opportunity for getting experience in development technologies that you might not have worked with before (at least that's what they tell me, I'm not a developer). Dallas residents only though. PM me with questions or just apply here.

I realized it's gotten out of control. I realize I'm out of control.
Job Seeker

Location: Denver, CO or Telecommute

Education: BS in Physics

Experience: Over a decade of experience in IT consulting, project management and account management. I came up as a network admin and transitioned into account/project management 6 years ago. For the last eight years I worked for one company, a small "boutique" IT consultant specializing in Managed Services, Private Cloud implementation and SaaS. The company's small size and expansive array of client needs necessitated that I acquire hands-on experience with a wide variety of technologies and wear many hats in managing my client accounts. I have knowledge and experience with project management (technical implementations and also software dev as a product owner) client retention and relationships/sales, Cloud architecture (Private Clous, IaaS, DaaS, PaaS), data center management, vendor management, and staff management.

Looking for: Technical project management roles first and foremost. Also very open to IT Manager, IT Director, or (slightly less open to) Account Manager positions. I have the most experience in a small, start-up style environment, but working for a larger company would also be cool.

Availability: ASAP

Job Seeker

Location: Seattle, WA

Education: BA in English (University of Wisconsin), Certificate in Technical Writing (University of Washington)

Experience: I currently work as a technical writer and instructional developer at F5 Networks on their Field Enablement team, helping our various sales teams get trained in on their messaging to companies who badly need modern load balancers/security for their server setups (and probably don't even realize it). Sometimes I'm writing guides for people to coordinate training boot camps, sometimes I'm putting together assessments in Storyline 2, sometimes I'm editing videos in Camtasia, and sometimes I'm doing whatever my boss can't get to, since almost everyone else in my group is in meetings 80-95% of the time. F5 is a great company that is currently doing quite well, and I recommend it.

Before that I worked as a technical writer for Bio-Rad Laboratories, who make medical diagnostic equipment, like HIV testing kits. I worked on their procedural documentation, the kind of stuff that if it's not right, one of the many groups that regularly audits Bio-Rad can assign fines and work stoppages, causing millions of dollars in losses. This involved updating documentation that was created in the early 1980's, hadn't really changed in look since then, and in some cases hadn't been updated in 10-15 years. I was hired and working for people who really had no idea what a technical writer does (an issue that comes up frequently that they never tell you about in school), so that was fun.

Previous to that I worked as an RFP Editor at Kibble & Prentice, a downtown insurance brokerage that usually worked in employee benefits plans. I would write and edit RFPs for commercial, tribal, and government groups, all of which were wildly different in what they expected to read from us.

My first real job in the area was as a content editor with Google, who were very big on metrics and changing all the parameters of the project every week. I worked on the Field Trip app, which is composed of content originally written for tour guides and local history books, and often written poorly. So I was running through about 300 pages of content a week and sprucing it up for general audience consumption/to meet Google's standards. That eventually involved teaching other people how to do it one-on-one, and write guides and FAQs to help onboard people who came onto the project months or years after I did.

Looking For: That was all contract stuff. My current gig ends at the end of this month. I'm looking for a permanent job, but I'll take whatever. As you can see I tend to fit in doing whatever you can throw at me in terms of editing. I've enjoyed working in sales/marketing because it tends to be less tedious, but tedium cannot defeat me.

Contact: PM me.

-Assist with after-hours/weekend/holiday recovery call to ensure 24/7 coverage.
-Operate cooperatively with other members of the leadership team in order to develop the best technical team possible.
-Demonstrate initiative; identifying areas for improvement, acting on developing training materials for implementation and execution, without requiring direction.
-Assists with guidance and direction with the overall plan path, and with staff members performing duties.
-Foster a spirit of cooperation with co-workers by being a leader, mentor, and trainer.
-Establish and maintain effective/positive communications with all staff.

-Prefer 5+ years’ experience in similar technical position
-Vast knowledge of In Situ, Enucleation, and Excision procedures

Job Seeker

Location
Portland, OR
Super interested in Washington or California. Anywhere else could be interesting too.

Experience
4+ years in maintaining production windows servers (IIS basically) and occasional helpdesk tasks. My department gets treated like a human python script so I started learning how to automate away all the little annoyances and checking if any critical services went down or log files said anything important.
Now I want to find my start in web-development. I’ve been studying for about 8 months and have two Node projects that we use at work.

Elevator Pitch
Dedicated software craftsman with proven experience in solution development from scratch or existing codebases. I specialize in realtime web applications.
Interested in any work related to Node.js, Javascript, python, ahk, or Dart.

Education
I do not have a college degree. Went and learned object oriented programming by necessity when scripts got too long or needed a GUI. I learned Node.js after server timeouts and scalability got in the way of speed.

What I'm Looking For
Anything web related. Anything programming related.
