DJT got lucky with a really weak field, and the few moderately competent opponents he does have all have major strikes against them (Cruz is the most hated man alive, Rubio is incredibly lazy).

I really don't think that Sanders beats Trump in the general. The Republican Party could put up Some Cauliflower w/ Googly Eyes Glued On/11-Year-Old Yorkshire Terrier as their ticket in the general, and still beat Sanders. It's waaaaay too easy to paint the man as a atheist in the public consciousness, which torpedoes his viability in the general. How hard would it be to get people to believe that a self-described socialist whose own family calls their upbringing "basically secular", is an atheist? The answer is: not very.

Nobody is saying for sure what Trump is going to do in the general-nobody can predict the future with that kind of certitude. But Trump can be difficult to handle by a conventional candidate. Romney ran a bad campaign, but he wasn't a particularly bad candidate. He smashed Obama in the first debate, and had some bright spots. You also have to acknowledge disadvantages that were not his making including running against an incumbent, which is very difficult.
