Grand Theft Autobot posted:What states are considered the "home base" of the Republican Establishment? States where the kooky evangelicals aren't as powerful. Mostly states outside of the south that tend to vote democratic in the presidential election anyways. Basically the states that Romney won in 2012 before everyone dropped out. One of the most glaring stupidities of analysis from pundits this cycle is how they've repeatedly missed that Trump's numbers are actually stronger in these traditionally establishment states.

To expand and extrapolate the commentary of the legendary campaigner Lee Atwater into position implications for current electoral lanes: Fiscal conservatism is a product of political correctness. Why do I say this? Let's look directly at Atwater's commentary: quote:You start out in 1954 by saying, “friend of the family, friend of the family, friend of the family.” By 1968 you can’t say “friend of the family”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “friend of the family, friend of the family.” Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, and Marco Rubio are "talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things...." That's what fiscal conservatism means to them. Trump's not talking about those things other than to offhandedly dogwhistle towards them to judge their popularity at his rallies. Trump's found a way to yell "friend of the family, friend of the family" without being a racist and so can call for expanding America's social support network and for spending levels last seen during FDR's New Deal on public-works projects which directly address civilian employment opportunities and economic inequality in America.

What are the implications for the general election? Well, Bernie Sanders is selling the same fiscal policies as Donald Trump, only he's attempting to do so without yelling a social media-acceptable modernization of "friend of the family, friend of the family, friend of the family." If it comes down to a choice on whether Americans would rather yell the modern equivalent to the feelings represented by "friend of the family, friend of the family, friend of the family," or of having the same policies without the underpinning of national superiority, always bet on national superiority. Unfortunately for Hillary, she passed on her opportunity to learn from Trump and maintains her politically correct stances on economic policy.

the best thing about ted cruz' kind of campaigning is that people like us are repulsed but people like the ones who answer polls and generally don't hate ted cruz, as crazy as that sounds, aren't like us, they don't pay this much attention, and there's a chance that they actually move toward him as a result of it. negative, cynical campaigning, historically, has worked, and i'll be interested to read the tea leaves on tuesday to decide how it might have affected things in iowa this year

I think it is unfortunate that Republicans are able to ratfuck opposition campaigns better than Democrats, and feel it necessary that the party should fund research and development of evidence-based methodologies for the most effective ratfuckery possible in today's post-Citizen's United campaign ecosystem. You know what has also, historically, worked for elections? Owning and operating breweries and saloons.
