In terms of dudes pulled from the crowd, Canadian Guy ranks pretty high.

Summary of thoughts on last three episodes because I just binged them: 178: - What an inconsistent episode, the first part was fantastic but the end was such a disaster. - Schrab is loving invaluable for no other reason than he can derail lovely guests from talking about themselves and turn it into comedy gold. That videogame technical writer guy had nothing to bring to the table but Schrab kept interfering with Dan's attempt to talk to him and forced one of the funniest improv scenes the show has ever done. Carol in the snake basket killed me. - Unfortunately, not even Schrab can save us from DeMorge. Dude just isn't funny or interesting - like, not even a little - and he not only doesn't contribute much but also often ends up killing the momentum of the show whenever he opens his mouth. Worst of all, Dan cannot resist talking race around him. That conversation about race and porn has to be one of the lowest nadirs in this show's history. 179: - The tumblr girl could not have been a more insufferable stereotype if she had tried. At least everyone making GBS threads on her was funny. - Double mastectomy girl wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting from this thread. I hate Dan's insistence on bringing out people with medical conditions and and saying variations of "wow" for twenty minutes but she didn't linger too long and she kept it to the point. What was weird was the circumstances of how she first contacted Dan and I think Jeff caught that when he asked about it. Dan says he made the announcement on Twitter about the show and then she reached out to him, and then he moved the conversation on in a hurry, but I can't think of a way that wouldn't be awkward as hell. Was she just like: "Oh cool, you're in San Fran. By the way, I just had a double mastectomy!"? I'm sure I'm being uncharitable to her and that she wasn't fishing for anything, but, on the subject, there's nothing worse than the people who are really desperate to get on stage. I'll always remember that show with the articulate neuroscientist, who just happened to be part-Asian, which prompted one girl to offer "I"m a full Asian" when Dan canvased the audience looking for guests afterwards. There's also that one guy who goes to Nerdmelt every week who is clearly chomping at the bits every week to get up on the stage (and he's the guy with the annoying laugh). He's the one who wore a duffel bag two weeks in a row so he'd get called up (and Spencer rightly called him out on it) and then volunteered to beatbox more recently. He is just so desperate for the attention. - Overall, a good show. Dan's weekly updates about his descent into porn addition and increasingly depraved tastes are hilarious. 180: - Rhea's great, I hope she comes back again. - Canadian here: Canadian dude was way too high strung and annoying. - Political talk in this show is such a crapshoot. It can either be hilarious or a total wreck. This week it was mostly the latter. - "DeMorge isn't here" Thank gently caress.

When Dan started talking about incest porn I thought "finally, someone is on my side about this." But no, rather than being annoyed and grossed out that incest has become so common in porn, he's annoyed that it's not authentic enough. I almost admire his commitment to being the grossest dude he can be.

DeMorge is a fantastic actor. I don't know if his subdued personal affect fits Harmontown any better than... Well actually everyone complains about everyone, so who's to say.

I was in the room for that one, and it was about twenty times worse than what you can hear on the podcast. The whole theatre was going bananas shouting out any tidbits they could seize on. "DEAD DAD!" "WHEELCHAIR!" "BORN IN AUSTRIA!" and Dan was just kind of tottering through the aisles amicably dismissing people.

Between Shadowrun and his turn on Dead Authors Podcast, I really like his ability to inhabit a character. As a personality, he's not so hot. It's really not so odd of thing, but Harmontown is a personality driven podcast, so I get the griping to a point. It just gets a little weird and sad when it gets to an Irish Joe level of hatred. tldr DeMorge is sort of okay, mostly.

Well the latest episode was pretty action packed. Didn't look like the guy got hit that hard to be honest. Also was Dan joking about having a girlfriend at the end?

Around 1:10:20 Before that it's one of those mediocre "Harmontown takes place at a festival / con in front of people who aren't necessarily there for it and Dan didn't bring any notes and Dino's trying to be hilariously offensive" kind of shows and after the punch everything gets real awkward.

I think they actually did plan it. I'm not going to armchair analyze it too much but that punch looked pulled* and Punchface did not act like someone who just got sucker punched out of the blue, especially with how he brushed it off and how he was so willing to attribute the punch to his friend being zany and a "little riled up." Maybe I'm just automatically biased against Punchface because he was so eager for stage time (as he awkwardly admitted) and I'm too quick to think the worst of him, but the whole thing felt staged to me. * it might just be the perspective though. Like, Punchface definitely got hit - I'm not doubting that - I just don't think his friend was trying to hit him as hard as he could. The rest of the episode was pretty good though. Dan, Spencer, and Dino all seemed in good spirits.

The documentary tour had some good shows but I've been really lukewarm on most of the recent non-Meltdown ones in general. Agreed. The non-meltdown ones have been awful for a while, Dan is always so nervous. That's probably been the best one. I am glad they didn't have to hit the Dino well too much and even the 53 year old guy was mildly interesting. Spencer was also good - he doesn't get used enough. Why not have him as guest comptroller? That guy that got punched deserved it, geez guys like that are insufferable.

CPColin posted:Latest episode suggests they're finally going to give up on Shadowrun. Hooray! That's probably for the best if they're not going to commit to it. D&D kind of barely worked because there was a period where it was actually a significant part of the show, so once it was reduced to five minute chunks the setup was all still there. Shadowrun went, what, two episodes before it reached that point? Haven't they been at a storage facility for like four months?
|
# ? Feb 3, 2016 17:11 |

Shadowrun was a bad idea from the get-go because it's so much harder to explain to new people. You pull someone up from the audience, if it's D&D you can just say "it's like Lord of the Rings" and they'll get that. Shadowrun is a lot weirder. The specific game they play on Harmontown was completely hosed when they decided to have half a dozen characters because that's how many people were on stage that day. So every episode they have to pull up multiple random people to play a game they don't understand.

I guess their new marketing scheme to get people to sign up to the stream is just to do long, primarily visual improv? "Want to find out why Rob Schrab was just screaming for two solid minutes? $4.99 a month!"
