Most places can refuse service dogs like that but they don't because it makes them look like a jerk. I mentioned it in the food thread I think but a while back I was in a restaurant and they let a family bring their service pug in and walk all over the table they were sitting at. It didn't act very well trained so I kind of doubt it was a service animal.

There's still debate and controversy over whether "emotional support animals" count as legitimate service animals or if you need to have a "real disability" to have one.

Rant of the day...

Yeah, I know, it's been a while. Life tends to take precedence over FB most days (hey, greasy - might want to try it!)

So, let me get this straight. The Dems only two viable options for President are a woman who has absolutely no self respect (she stood by her cheating husbands side while he admitted to it), has a trail of bodies a mile long behind her, is a lying, criminal piece of poo poo who takes no accountability for her crimes - and a 74 year old socialist who never worked a real day in his life, thinks all women want to be raped (his own words), and believes he can fix this country by giving everyone free poo poo. So, in other words, people who ACTUALLY represent the left. Gotcha. Uselessness coming from the left as usual.

Oh, but, wait - it gets better. The Repubs have Donald Trump, who talks a bad rear end game and tells us all what we've been longing to hear, but has not once, EVER, laid out anything of substance to convince us that he can do what he claims he can. Just says he can.So we're supposed to just accept that and vote for Trump. Yeah, how's about no. Then we have Marco Rubio who headed the gang of 8 amnesty proposal. He wants to grant amnesty to illegals. Yeah, how's about no, again. Then there's Cruz. I'm not so convinced about Cruz either. I think he has more of a chance of actually following thru on what he says, however, he's a little too far right for my tastes, too. And lets not forget about ole Jeb Bush, who claims that he'll get the Republican nomination - and he just might. The establishment stopped listening to us all a LONG time ago.

So, in other words, we still don't have anyone worth a poo poo running for President. And here we all sit bitching about it. With our thumbs up our collective asses - watching our fellow conservatives - you know, the ones actually willing to stand up to the feds - get murdered by the FBI in Oregon, while saying 'what a shame' - and still sitting in our arm chairs unwilling to do a loving thing. Fantastic. But, in all seriousness - we all bitched and moaned about someone standing up to the Feds - well, there ARE people standing up to the feds. And we all just sit here and watch them. I can't say I'm any better. I'm right there with you all.

I guess we'll just keep voting away our rights until we have none. Sucks for my kids and future grandkids - but, hey, at least I'm getting older and hopefully won't live long enough to see ALL of our rights taken away. At least if we get a conservative in the White House, we might be able to stop the cancer from completely taking over. Here's to hoping!

How can anxiety be trendy? Ugh. It just makes you look bad. By being so shy you actually stand out more and make people wonder what's wrong with you. There's nothing cool about it.

I find a lot of the people treat it similar to OCD, in that they don't actually have it but claim they do if they are picky about something being done. Same with anxiety disorders vs just getting nervous sometimes.

I'm glad I no longer have the physiological impacts I used to suffer and I'm glad my anxiety is gone. I like being able to make eye contact with people and not assuming everyone is going to btry and kill me if they raise their voice. It's wonderful the fear is gone. It's not a badge of honour to parade around. And you certainly don't have it if you get nervous before having to do something out of your comfort zone.

A lot of people I know claim their anxiety is being triggered if they have to give a presentation in class. No, that's perfectly 100% normal.

Hey guys let's just literally never talk to me again maybe that'll fix things
Look, some people make excuses to make people pity them for having a disorder that they don't.

On the other hand, poo poo like that stops people who need help from getting help. Fun fact, if you have a debilitating mental disorder that stops you from making friends and/or social contacts outside of your family, it can be hard to actually get help when people have that attitude towards you. Including some doctors. It's even worse when your parents don't let you see a doctor after you've started to realize you're different, done research into it, and considered the possibility that you have a disorder, just for the sake of saving face. Some parents are assholes and would rather have you suffer than be the parent of the "retarded kid".

It's because of that attitude that my life was almost ruined. I've attempted suicide once and I used to contemplate it a lot. All because my mother always told me "there's nothing wrong with you, stop being lazy" no matter how bad I ended up throwing my life down the drain. You don't deliberately almost fail out of college 3 times, fail out of college on your last year, lose 3 jobs, and socially ostracize yourself for the entirety of grade school, be a nervous wreck, and sleep 12-15 hours a day every day for attention. Like, it's one thing to make up symptoms, it's another completely when your life's in shambles over seemingly irrational behavior and people think you're making excuses.

I finally got the chance to cut contact with my parents and go see a doctor after I attempted suicide. And what do you know, it's not just depression and anxiety, but full-blown adult ADHD! I get put on Adderall, and I'm finally starting to function like a human being for once in my life. I can complete tasks that I start successfully. It's great!

Here's the thing. Sure, there are some people who use fake disabilities to make excuses for their behavior, but stop generalizing that everyone or even close to everyone is like that. Not to mention, the reason "more disorders" are being found is because psychologists and psychiatrists are learning more about the human mind and how debilitating its malfunctioning can be, not because people are literally making up poo poo. I get it, schadenfreude is great, but you don't have to instantly beeline to "oh it's because people are turning into pathetic narcissistic tumblrinas" or some poo poo.

Like, stuff like this is people just making poo poo up and/or being facetious. Same with "oh, I'm so OCD about such and such". Again, it's usually pretty obvious to spot. When someone actually has OCD, I guarantee you they wish they were making that poo poo up. Washing your hands hundreds of times a day is nobody's idea of fun, not even for a lovely person who likes making excuses to justify bad behavior.

I think the general venture of posts like this are trying to normalize mental illness when all they achieve is infantilizing people with those illnesses. I can see why people with [x] condition get sandy when that starts happening.

To chime in, I think it gets trendy because people are insecure about deficiencies in their personalities and assume that mental illness will give them a "pass" when, if you've ever experienced mental illness, you'll know no one gives you a pass for actual mentally ill behavior.

I hear that anxiety disorders are the current "I, the shrink, have to diagnose this patient with SOMETHING in order to get insurance to pay for their treatment, but don't have a really solid diagnosis yet beyond 'has brain problems'" diagnosis, so that may also have something to do with its current popularity.

Not that there aren't a bunch of self-diagnosers. I also assume we see a lot of anxiety people on the internet for the same reason we see a lot of autism people: this is the only place they can comfortably socialize for whatever reasons.

Exactly it. I don't go around telling people I have ADHD unless it's to make people not be judgmental of people with mental disabilities, in which case I feel obligated to speak up. It makes people think less of you, especially if they know what the disorder actually entails. Losing your train of thought mid-sentence, asking people to repeat a simple question way too many times, getting bored easily, having overly impulsive emotional reactions (namely losing control of anger or sadness, but for other emotions it's not socially unacceptable most of the time), not being able to stay on task because you forget what you were doing in the first place, being bad at listening to people to the point where they think you're ignoring them, being bad at meeting deadlines or making appointments on time by accident, and being really bad at split-second decision making (driving, video games).

It's the last thing I'd want to brag about short of my sex life.

My husband has massive, diagnosed, debilitating anxiety/depression/whatever-the-gently caress-else and I hate that it's trendy for people to "have" it and think it's cute. No, not being able to handle normal life isn't fun. Having to play around with doctors and see what meds might work and what ones make him want to die isn't fun. Losing jobs and houses isn't fun. Having doctors say, "Are you sure you want to keep working there?" isn't fun. Having to worry that a doctor might not take him seriously is not loving fun. Having some doctor tell him, " Have you tried yoga and mindfulness?" when he talks about suicide is really hosed up. And I absolutely hate when someone intelligent is treated like they're retarded because they're sick. Goddamn it.

Those people who act like mental illness is trendy can gently caress right the hell off. I have a ton of mental illness in my family and I understand how awful it is. People are such assholes about it. Ugh.

I think it depends on the setting; in places like tumblr where there's a general culture of making "safe spaces" and respecting people's issues, being able to cite a mental illness (legit or no) can net you some special consideration, and in the more deranged areas can turn into a way to shut down other people.

Again, a lot of these people might not have strong interactions in the outside world.

I'm glad you're doing better, bluekingbar. :)

I have more of the 'obessive' part of OCD (diagnosed by a therapist yes), though both obsessions (mostly thoughts) and compulsions are an anxiety thing.

Like 'oh god my husband didn't text me exactly 11 minutes after leaving for work HE MUST BE DEAD' and god forbid if I hear ambulance sirens during that time frame. I've had awful panic attacks when his phone service went down at a bad time. It involves really intrusive thoughts about death, usually. When I went on an airplane for the first time a year ago, I had panic attacks on both flights. I've had the panic attacks about him dying while he's sitting right next to me. It's irrational and terrifying. I would give almost anything to not have to be constantly reminded of how fragile human life is.

It's not really cute or quirky, it's really loving scary and even though he's incredibly supportive, I feel bad for getting freaked out literally every day. I have some of the poo poo in that tumblr list, too, and I wish the extent of my anxiety was my sweaty palms and difficulty speaking to people when I'm out alone, instead of that plus intrusive thoughts of death, or the abandonment fears that come with BPD.

And now that I think about it, these obsessions probably do lead to some compulsions for me. Oops!

Completely unregistered and untrained 'emotional support animals' are a good way to make people wary of actual, trained and 100% necessary guide/support animals.

The amount of strict training and rules and effort that goes into an actual service animal is amazing, which also includes training with the person who they'll be working with, and those animals can do amazing things for the people who need them. gently caress people who try to abuse that and basically back employees into a corner because they can't question your lovely dog.

Really. I'm going to start magically liking Jack and the fact that Tom's ensured we won't get anything resembling a Kat/Annie end?

Great, one more boring-rear end straight romance. Tons of potential lost and for what? Because Tom didn't feel like taking any chances. That's for the two designated 'weird' kids in the comic, huh? Can't have the main characters interested in each other, despite all the little hints (and sometimes not so little ones) dropped all over the place. Must make them straight, boring, and ensure they wind up with the worst characters in the comic.

Yeah, tell me what there is to look forward to with this couple, hoss. You seem to be all for it. Jack's the most boring lead in any romance since Chiba Mamoru from Sailormoon. :) There's not a single interesting (or redeeming) thing about him and yet it's looking increasingly like Annie's going to end up with him.

Because straight people, that's why. God forbid GCC take a chance with anything. Nope, must conform to the status quo and leave that gay poo poo to the weirdo characters, right?

Yeah, no. gently caress you and gently caress Tom. I guess it's nice he made a 'please stop reading my webcomic, it's becoming like any other teen romance strip' arc though. Real considerate-like. Always good to see straightforward, boring fuckin' romance blooming. And at the end, they'll have a kid, Annie'll die, and Kat'll be there to talk about the kid's adventures in the school or some other stereotypically generic thing. Because the kids must be like the parents, always and forever.

I'll be honest I'm not exactly sure what "sharia law" entails. Does it radically infringe upon the rights of the citizen or something?

I'm probably wrong on a good chunk of this so I apologise but nobody else gave it a stab so this is what I believe it to be

Essentially, Sharia law is letting the community govern itself to a degree. Obviously in countries where Sharia law is implemented at the state level it works differently, but when they talk about Sharia law in the UK/US, they're essentially meaning that the community wants to take into it's own hands the judgment for things like adultery, and other things that go against Islam but aren't considered crime. To my knowledge, nobody can be forced into obeying it if they don't want to, it's just an agreement if you want to be considered part of the community.

Now, there is the possibility of issues where they might want to govern actual crimes rather than letting people be prosecuted under the law, but I don't know how common this mindset is. And the fact is, if anyone is caught doing that, they'll be guilty of conspiracy and a bunch of other things I'm sure, so it's never going to stand.

To my knowledge, sharia law in the West is no big deal and is simply a cultural thing that doesn't affect anyone who doesn't want to be a part of it. Therefore IT MUST BE STOPPED FROM RUINING ARE COUNTRY!!11
