Any reason to do the tutorial and not just learn by trial and error jumping into commander ironman? I'm guessing it's like EU where the tutorial has you make sub-optimal decisions to teach you some stuff.

Regarding all the RNG talk, the first game did lie to you about hit chances and actively fudged numbers in the background, giving aim bonuses to XCOM after misses and penalties to aliens after hits. When modders removed it the result was huge hit/miss chains where you could frequently spend an entire turn missing high% shots, way beyond anything statistically reasonable. So unless Firaxis changed their design philosophy and made an actually decent RNG this time around you can't just dismiss any complaints as bad luck because for all the know the RNG for the second game might be just as screwed up as the first one. On a somewhat related note it seems they went all out on the RNG which makes it all the more frustrating. I'm getting 70-80% shots on point blank flanks when IIRC the first game would have given you a 95%. Sure, even a 95% could miss but it still made close range flanks a lot more reliable and by cranking up the miss chances it feels like the game is actively trying to reduce the impact of proper tactics and trying to be more of a dice game and that's just plain frustrating.

Man, the first armor upgrade is like night and day with this game. Suddenly my soldiers can walk around without falling over for a stiff breeze. Also, regarding the RNG. The problem with extreme RNG in games is that the player has to be lucky every time, the AI only really needs to get lucky once.

Kai Tave posted:Well so what's the alternative here if "you've experienced a statistically plausible amount of bad luck" doesn't sit right with you then, that your copy of the game has some kind of hidden RNG malfunction that so far nobody else seems to be experiencing? I'm not denying your frustration but if this really is a bug it doesn't sound like one a lot of other people are running into. The alternative could be "they modified the RNG for difficulty poorly." The problem with this kind of thing is that saying "90% chance to not to pick the number one" doesn't mean that if you press the randomizer ten times, odds are that you won't pick the number one a single time, and other numbers 9 times. It will still be always a one-in-ten chance, but you can roll that 1 three times in a row, and say "that's potentially 3 out of 30." I'm not saying XCOM uses that as I don't really know, but signs seem to point to it, and it's especially a problem when you flank an enemy, miss, and they run head-on into your overwatch with no damage to score critical hits while standing in the open. Yeah, ADVENT are suicidal as gently caress and it's hard to gauge how far they can move and act when starting out. I'm getting constantly surprised. It's a difficult transition from XCOM1 especially since the timers push you to keep moving. Has anyone gotten a Code Black or lost several of their senior troops and still managed to keep their campaign alive? After that one you have free rein to move and gently caress up as you please; the talking heads just bitch at you to go to the objective without forcing you to move a certain way. The story as I understand it is: EW happened up to the point that the base was attacked, but you failed to repel the attack. The Commander was captured, X-Com was scattered, and the Council went "WELP gently caress this" and bent over for the aliens. Nah, it keeps cropping back up as you uncover new stuff. I was railroaded into abandoning a supply drop in order to go make contact with the resistance in the black site area once I unlocked that feature. Then I was forced to abandon contacting the resistance to deal with a retaliation. Good to see that forced actions don't interfere with the game tossing you directly into the poo poo.

Antti posted:I'm up to tutorial mission 3 and this is one of the rookies the game randomly spits at me. The game gave him the nickname The Truth. Sometimes when he kills an enemy he says "They can't handle me!" The aliens can't handle The Truth. Other things of note: - My first combat loss came in my third mission, which was a VIP extraction. I got everyone else out, but my last guy out was a bit behind and ate an overwatch shot when dashing to the evac zone on the last turn. The hit made him panic so he couldn't catch the rope, and he was captured. When I went to rescue him, one of the guys in the squad got walloped by a stun lancer on turn loving 2 so I had to carry his unconscious rear end all the way through the map to get a net positive out of that mission. - Like someone else mentioned a few pages back, I also made the mistake of skulljacking a commander in a retaliation mission. As if on cue, a Faceless also decided to spawn at pretty much the same time. While most of the squad was dealing with those things, I had a squaddie ranger make a mad dash to save some civilians that were being merrily gunned down by what turned out to be my first muton and a couple advent mooks. Of course, the civilian she dashed next to was another loving Faceless. I figured welp, she ded, but no. She dodged every loving shot the aliens took at her, AND the Faceless melee swipe to boot. On the next turn the first Faceless - which was now on fire* - also had a go at her but also missed. Thanks to this loving miracle and The Truth's impeccable sniping I managed to pull the mission off with only two KIA and the minimum of 6 civvies saved. Basically what I'm saying here is holy poo poo this game loving owns so much. *: Dragon Rounds are amazing. Nordick fucked around with this message at 12:50 on Feb 5, 2016 |

I am at my first Avenger Defence mission, and I'm doing pretty well but I think I'm stuck badly. When I end my turn, a dropship starts to arrive and then my computer will crash. I hear the audio of the dropship, the computer crashes with the audio still playing, nothing more happens and my monitor goes black with No Input on the display. It happens each time I tryt, and it has happened 3 times in a row now. I am on Ironman mode so any ideas?

Man this game runs like poo poo. Few questions: How do you set way points, then slash with a Ranger? I know how to set way points, but once I hover over the enemy to get the slash icon and click, it erases all my check points and shows the default mad dash line to the enemy. Where do you find the veteran of the old war preorder soldier?
