I worked at a liquor store with a friend who was training to become a.... old person caregiver? I don't know the official name. She now works at old folks' homes helping them eat and move around, and use the bathroom and bathe. Seriously unbelievable tasks that I can't ever imagine doing (I'm a teacher now). The thing is, she's the nicest, most upbeat person in a world. I can't imagine anyone doing what she does with a more negative attitude than her. It's her positive outlook that lets her wipe up old people poo, and it's amazing she can do it day after day after day. Anyway, I guess this is a shout-out to a friend who will never see it, and also another complimentary perspective on LaB's potentially sad veterinary work. It's all in the 'tude, yo. Keep it real.

Our car got totaled and we used the insurance money to pay for our cat to die from kidney problems.

Then we had no car & no cat & no money.

I don't regret it though, because Silas was the best cat and had a fun personality and was a real pal to me sometimes, so I'm glad we gave him the best chance for survival, though I have suspicions that he was pretty much terminal from the get-go, but the vets and specialists just gave us options for no real reasons other than their paychecks.

Here he is on my head:

Over time maybe for me. My brother was a hospice volunteer, and I went with him a few times, It was something unique and I think of the elderly lady often.

Reminds me of an episode of the podcast Hound Tall. They had a cremation specialist discussing death and burial cultures. She talks about the gradual acceptance of the grim (to the none acclimated) job and other things. Very hilarious, but on a dark subject matter.

Yeah, people in medicine need to watch out for compassion fatigue, which is more or less exactly what it sounds like. It will definitely be really rough at times but it's something I've wanted to do since grade school and if I can help save some peoples' critters or even just alleviate their suffering, well, that's what I'm in it for. :shobon:

I'm a foster parent and also a social worker :shobon: It's totally possible to be a great foster parent! Most often that leads them to be great adoptive parents. We train foster parents now to understand that they are that child's parent, and if they are unwilling to be a potentially adoptive home, we use them less and less in favor of people who really fall in love with the kids in their home.

Compassion fatigue is real, though. Part of my job is working with child abuse perpetrators (moms and dads who have seriously abused their children) and try to help them get to a place where they can have their children back. They get 6-12 months to make that change, so it's pretty intensive. I have to make sure my home life is as wonderful as possible because otherwise I might tell that mom that says her daughter is lying about the things moms boyfriend did what I really think!

There are certain crimes that we call "bypass cases" where you have no right to reunify with your children. For example, if you have caused the death of the child's sibling, or have permanently lost custody of previous children due to abuse or neglect.

But yeah it turns out sometimes the people who beat their kids are hosed up and in need of help and not just faceless monsters, and a lot of people have tons of remorse and ability to change. Sometimes even in six months - for instance, the mom that breaks up with her abusive husband, or the homeless family that gets housing and becomes more stable.

.... She said in the post your selfie thread somehow

As an adopted kid, good on you. Just make sure you are honest with the kids about what happened, I have never met someone adopted who was not hosed up when the found out down the road that their parents were not their natural kids, and me growing up knowing about where I came from just made me love my parents more.

And I agree with Mr. Minimalist Program, if you're going to post pics with kids at least crop faces!

If anyone in this thread is considering fostering, or your interest has been piqued, please feel free to PM me! These kids have been through a lot and I am always encouraging loving, stable adults to consider fostering children who need families, temporary and permanent.

Congrats on your finalized adoption, Vermin, and I agree about openness in adoption, RFC (though my kids are much older, and very obviously of a different racial background than my own!)
