"The rendezvous point has been compromised." gently caress you game, gently caress you. gently caress. You. It's times like this where I'm glad I don't play on Ironman. I would have been extremely pissed off if I lost an entire campaign because of this. edit: Holy poo poo, I actually managed to win this one, with special help from Implacable and Stun Lancers' aversion to shooting your guys. Everyman posted:Came here to ask more or less the same thing. I started a run on Commander with the tutorial just to see the intro mission, then restarted without it. Does enabling the tutorial have any additional cutscenes beyond those in the first couple of missions or any other additional content? I know it isn't much but I like being able to see all those kinds of things. Tutorial - Gives you a "free" Ranger. - Has a ~5 minutes tutorial mission which contains a serious amount of plot. Followed by a freebie mission which you are in full control that is actually quite difficult and is basically just a story/plot mission more then a "tutorial" at all. Followed by a number of other major cutscenes you do not see if you skip the tutorial, which go into how the ship is running/what happened to Earth/etc etc. - Turns the chip research from 5 days to 0 days, and the Advent Officer research from 5-7 days to 1 day. This is actually a huge boon since getting more scientists/research upfront is a pain in the rear end. - Gives you a free Engineer/Scientist, again huge. NonTutorial - You start with a squad that will almost assuredly all level up if you aren't terrible, which means you'll have one of every class right off the bat. - You can play in Ironman ( don't yet, the game is super buggy and you will lose your save at some point. ). - You get zero context for whats going on across the board, since it still plays the cutscenes implying you saw the events of the tutorial, all the way up to where I am in the midgame ( where I met a person talking about how his brother died trying to get us that power cell in tutorial mission 2! ) Also I'm taking a breather from XCOM 2 until they get some patches on this game. I'm not sure it's working as intended even from a basic gameplay standpoint, and I don't want to deal with that right now. I had all my guys stationed inside of a building, and an Advent Trooper ran up to the WALL outside of the building, which was fully up, and suddenly got full flanking on all of them, which he used to kill my best Support. The whole length of wall was up, it just counted his model which was clipping through the wall as good enough, and placed him inside the building for a full flank on my whole team.

The most fun I've had so far was with a VIP mission where you started with the VIP and had to move him to the extraction point, which had a pod right on it (the area close around the extraction point is revealed). It turned out it had 3 other pods on/under/right nearby it as well. I ran across the map, set a sniper up on a building across the road, and had a nice shooting match with mutons, sectoids, snakemen etc. - Ranger question: often I set up my sword strike by mousing over the enemy then clicking on him, ranger wants to shoot him instead. So then I click the sword button, and it pre-sets the path for me. How do I set my own sword run path? -What exactly do the two first sniper gunslinger abilities do? One is lightning hands and the other is maybe gunslinger. The descriptions are, they both seem to be the same thing. One is 'fire without using an action' and the other is 'firing at the start of the turn doesn't end the turn'. Those sound like the same thing. I try to use this to fire my sniper rifle and my pistol and only ever manage to fire one (the pistol, which I fire first). Should I fire the rifle first? - Terror missions: are faceless counted in the 'alive civilians' count? Also, I saved 5 guys, less than the 'must save 6' limit, and it counted as ZERO PEOPLE SAVED! I mean I get that I failed it, but come on, I saved 5 dudes. - Loving my South African soldiers with Aussie accents. -Hating that every time I'm done in the lab/workshop and press the 'globe' button, someone starts talking with a cool plot point, for about .5 seconds, then stops talking and the text disappears as I get to the map. -Always bring a specialist if you have to hack a terminal for a mission! It gives you chances of extra bonuses, and you can hack the terminal while hiding elsewhere behind cover! Use a grenade to make a hole in the building, hack revealed objective with specialist, done!

I just finished this on Veteran. It is better than EU and EW in every way. The final mission gets absurdly hectic at times and I like how the difficulty never got to the point it did in EU where battles were a foregone conclusion. Turn limits were literally never a problem beyond one mission where my sniper was too far to evac. But it's funny to watch goons freak out over a minor game mechanic.

Ranger swords are either feast or famine for me as I tr to figure out which enemies I can and can't kill reliably.

You'll see a little arrow indicator on the ground showing that they are going to do a slash instead. Lightning hands means shooting your pistol is completely free, like it doesn't cost anything at all to use and you still have two actions after you are done if you do it at the beginning of your turn. The other one just makes it so you can shoot and then move or do Overwatch. No idea on the faceless thing.

So Steam says I have 21 hours of Xcom 2 logged (but at least 4 of those are when I left it running when I had to leave the house for a family emergency. So far, absolutely love the game. I feel like it has taken everything that I loved about the previous game and improved it, added a lot of cool neat concepts, and even seems to have recaptured some that feeling that I was playing against the computer instead of playing through a series of scripted events that I was missing from the original X-COM. I went the the Steam discussion forums to see if anyone was having the same issue I was with my 21:9 monitor (everything is a little too zoomed in, like they fit the image to the width of the monitor instead of the height. And some of the UI elements, like on the "bee-hive" or the soldier load up screen, don't line up right) But anyways, on the Steam Discussion forums I was surprised to see how many people are complaining so vocally about how much they hate the game and how timers have ruined it. I had one VIP rescue mission where my last guy made it out on the last turn and had to dash past several enemies to make it. Every other mission I have had, the timers have encouraged me to move along but rarely made me feel too rushed. Are timers really causing people that much trouble?

When does hacking start to become useful, because a 50% chance to buff every enemy in a mission doesn't seem worth a 50% to turn off a scanner and a whole 1% to get your actions back.

redreader posted:- Ranger question: often I set up my sword strike by mousing over the enemy then clicking on him, ranger wants to shoot him instead. So then I click the sword button, and it pre-sets the path for me. How do I set my own sword run path? The guided sword-strike is actually kind of finnicky but you can do it. Just move your cursor over the tile you want to move, then edge it into the enemy's square. If you do it right the sword-slash icon will appear in the move square for the Ranger and you can right click to confirm. NO CLICKING ON ABILITY BUTTONS NECESSARY, this is done ENTIRELY through the move interface. I mostly use the Slash ability's button to check the chance of success beforehand before clicking. First three gunslinger abilities (liekly out of order because I can't remember which one goes where): The very first gunslinger ability makes the Sniper automatically return fire with his pistol when he's attacked (once a turn). This has lead to an amazing number of Lancers to suicide on him as they run up, swing with their stun rod, and then get a bullet to the dome. The skill will activate on anything, even failed Sectoid mind-fuckery attacks, or grenades. It is also entirely seperate from the Sniper's normal overwatch. Lightning Hands lets you whip out your pistol once every four turns for free: it doesn't end the turn at all, and you still have two move points after (or 1 if you already moved/did something). It's exactly what it says on the tin: totally free shot once every four turns. The other one (forget the name) just makes it so that using your first action point on your pistol does not end your turn. So you can totally Lightning Hands a free shot, then immediately fire another pistol shot off, and then move, reload the rifle, toss a grenade or fire a *third* shot off. Or better yet: use Face-Off or Fan-Fire as your final action to shoot everyone once or one guy an additional three times.

Turn Timers and why this game is not a strategy title. No, I dont think the game is too hard. No, I'm not going to play on recruit, so dont bother. The turn limit issue has nothing to do with difficulty. Theres no strategy variety. You cant ♥♥♥♥ing use any strategy. Your only viable strategy is GOTTA GO FAST SANIC GOGOGOGO OH ♥♥♥♥ I LOST A GUY OH WELL GOTTA GO FAST GOTTA GO FAST! Who at Fireaxis thought putting 15 enemies on a tiny map, giving the player 4-6 soldiers, and making them move 4 turns worth of distance + 1 turn of hacking and forcing them to complete in 8 turns was a good idea. No ambushes. No sniping. No planning. Nothing. Run to the objective. If you get ♥♥♥♥ed up, reload. Thats this game. Thats all this ♥♥♥♥ is. No, I dont think combat is too difficult. Its about the same as EW with long war. Its pretty nice. The issue is, the game is balanced around a dumbass timecap, so even if you DID mod the turn timer out, the game instantly because laughably easy and stupid. Its like Fireaxis decided that using any semblance of actual military tactics was dumb, and because we are "guerillas" we should do THE EXACT OPPOSITE of insurgent warfare and run around in the open like dummies. Sorry gents, just because you are freedom fighters, doesnt mean you have to constantly and blatantly put yourself into ignorant situations where you have a very confined amount of time to reach your objectives, placing your soldiers into unnecessary danger. In fact, you'd think Super Commander McBadass wouldnt ♥♥♥♥ing take on missions which are inherently stupid and completely imbalanced risk vs reward. How is it so difficult to defeat an alien army when they just ♥♥♥♥ing stand around waiting to be shot on every single map until you break concealment, instantly alerting all enemies within 2 miles of your presence, giving them a nice window to run behind you and gank your soldiers? Oh whats that you say? Overwatch? Protect your flank? LOL GOTTA GO FAST SANIC ONLY HAS 3 TURNS LEFT. SEE YA ROOKIE! Come on guys. Tedium and forced perma death arent difficulty. They are tedium.

I try to use this to fire my sniper rifle and my pistol and only ever manage to fire one (the pistol, which I fire first). Should I fire the rifle first? Lightning Hands is a special ability, it gets its own slot on the toolbar, and it has a cooldown. Using that ability gives you a pistol shot without spending any actions. Quick Draw just means that when you shoot your pistol (which still costs an action, like shooting any other weapon), it doesn't end your turn unless you're out of actions. So you can shoot your pistol as your first action, then shoot your pistol again as your second action, or throw a grenade, or activate another ability, or whatever. Lightning Hands is the one that will let you shoot both your pistol and your rifle in the same turn. You need to shoot the pistol first (using Lightning Hands, not the regular "shoot pistol"), and then shoot the rifle. (Or shoot with the pistol twice more. That works too.)

Even with the benefits of the tutorial, I got utterly smashed by my own learning and some seriously bad luck. Highlight: Having someone with a height advantage getting 1shot out of high-cover, causing a panic chain that put me into a death spiral from losing my highest ranked soldiers on a terror mission. Second attempt on Hard is going much better so far, without the tutorial. It's hard to divine the balance between when to rush, and when to hunker down and eat shots so that other people can get into position. I much prefer Pectoids to use all the PSI powers they feel like using. For the love of god never shoot anybody, I'm begging you, psi-alien. As a friend.

The timer makes you do stupid things to make it on time (and a lot of people don't like that!). There are a couple of missions where a turn is the diff between one man getting left behind and everyone leaving. Still the biggest problem is the buggy gameplay itself. The timer just compounds the frustration people have.
