I largely just use it because I don't use the sword really ever so +2 sword damage is worthless. But by not getting revealed when the rest of the squad attacks, it allows you to scout out an extra pod or so in every mission, which you can then overwatch trap / chuck grenades on to / etc. I generally just reveal the ranger on pod 2 the first time I know I can kill a guy.

Is there only one base defense mission? I got mine really early on (I'm not even sure if I had mag weapons?) and it was really intense. I think I played mine way more aggressively than you guys did judging my the debrief screen. I killed maybe 20~ dudes before I managed to get everyone out of there., and only one one was a mec. Central never even got to send out 10 soldiers, or maybe I didn't have 10 at the time.

While I'm glad I'm not constantly having to worry about those, I could go for another one. If they never spawn again I guess it will spare me from having to build that turret facility.

Also, do workshops and labs do anything other than speed up build / research times?

Crosspeice
Aug 9, 2013

I'm definitely getting towards the end of the game and maybe I shouldn't have taken so long, cause all the missions are getting pretty samey, but that's mainly cause I'm just seeing the same enemies over and over again and it's pretty uninteresting. The hell happened to Berserkers anyway? It seems I only saw two, one to do the autopsy and one to make its item just out of curiosity. Anyway, I've basically ran out of research, so the only thing left to do if go for any achievements I feel like and just finish up.

Also finally got a recoverable Advent Turret wreck and it actually unlocks a facility! The Defense Matrix, which lets you staff your recovered turrets for use in Avenger defense missions. I probably won't be able to use the turret I autopsied and I'll be surprised if I get into another base defense, as well as actually recovering another turret, so the facility is probably gonna be useless, but hey it's something new to build.

That's the weird thing about XCOM 2, it's very deep with all the stuff you can do, but then it's very shallow with all the stuff you can do. It's weird. It definitely feels like there's stuff missing, cause only having three tiers of weapons and armour is boring and encountering all the aliens like 7-8 months into the campaign is boring. So here's to DLC and mods and all that.

And oh yeah, fix your game, Jake.

Going heavy on swords is really good on rangers and absolutely murders snakes who think they can slither in for a little hug. Concealment is neat I guess but you don't even get it for the actual hard missions so I've been treating it as a neat gimmick that I most deffo will not ever use a skill point on.

I just like to open up my ambushes with a Sword attack to a Lancer or Sectoid. I find Sword attacks to fix way too many problems for me to not spec into. Most the time I am able to place myself in fairly decent cover with them as well, you just have to fiddle your waypoints a little.

They get more expensive everytime you build one, so I'd probably only put down a handful period.

So hey, I paid for the last run of luck I talked about....A-Team got wiped out in a retaliation mission when three Muton packs, a Shieldbearer, ADVENT troops and two Berserkers clown carred out of a single warehouse.

B Team was lost due to poor time management and a hosed evacuation.

C team was lost because I somehow took off magnetic weapons and predator armour, so went into battle with basic kevlar and ballistics. :suicide:

Still, had a ton of fun and I've learned how to do better. I was "preparing" for future Blacksites for too long anyway, as the Doom Counter was getting increasingly quick to load up.

Between learning this game's mechanics, and unlearning XCOM's, the beginning was rough. It was a good while after the Blacksite (which I didn't exactly race to) before I finally started feeling like I was getting control instead of of flailing wildly. I almost neglected getting more coms up and nearly lost because I couldn't reach any enemy facilities for the longest time to control the Avatar Counter (it got to the doomsday clock before I could).

They are invaluable for me during timed missions and missions where you start revealed. They make it so you are never surprised by an enemy pod and cover ground more quickly.

The Defense Matrix is almost entirely pointless really. By the time you build one the odds of getting a defense mission are never going to happen. You'd have to ignore a UFO Hunt dark event then fail the evasion.
It'd be nice if it was something that'd happen randomly while scanning somewhere late game. Just have them drop a pulse tower and come after you.

On a story note does anything ever come up about the infection stuff from the book? I don't remember even seeing random NPC chatter about it or anything at all during the game.

Yeah but what's so great about that? You get to find and murder one pod. Whopee. Sword rangers murder kill anything that gets too close for free and take out those loving baton assholes in one hit. I've never seen a sword miss yet either.

I got a bit pissed earlier, I did the fist black site instantly and the game decided to reward my efforts by shooting down the avenger completely out of nowhere before bothering to even build that first avatar factory, there wasn't even a black event or anything. My mood was improved when this lead to 24 dead alions at the cost of one injured operative.

Get hosed advent you just wait till enough time can pass for those first armor and weapon researches to finish, then you'll be in real trouble.

Are there any other types of anti-Avatar missions besides the plant X4 ones? Those missions seem really easy (only on veteran though) because normally you can move someone up to the target, wait until your next turn, plant the explosive and then just dash to the extraction point you place right outside the door.

You must be crazy. I've built a tower in every region so far and currently have around 731 supplies in August. The income goes up with the towers and intel is way harder to get on its own. 90 intel can buy like 3 things at the Black Market.

Edit: to put it into perspective, I spend ~30 Intel almost every month at the Black Market to get 100-150 supplies. My 6th tower is going to cost 175 supplies which will make me a profit in 2 months.

It is way too easy to fall behind the curve and just lose the campaign in this.

I'm two pips away from the Avatar project being done and every single mission I can do to slow it down is outside of my comms range. I don't have enough supplies or engineers to boost my comms any more than I have and I don't think I will in time. I'm pretty sure I lost this campaign and I have no idea what I could've done differently except to just... never buy anything with supplies just in case, I guess?

I really dislike the feeling of helplessness this game clearly wants to engender.

The game will sometimes throw you a Facility Lead, you should prioritize getting them off the geoscape or as hack rewards since they instantly unlock a facility map, even if you don't have contact with the region it's in.

If you have this happening you need to build the radio room faster. Also remember to upgrade it and toss a 2nt dude in there, the 2nt guy massively (I think +5) extends your limit. More contacted areas leads into more supplies and unlocked regional bonuses that save you a massive amount of supplies and intel.

Expanding your network comes before any other goal if you want to avoid a death spiral mid game.

Once the avatar project pips fill up you still have 21 days before you lose. You are probably OK since you will most likely get a supply drop or 2 before that hits.

Just ride the timer and try to get comms up with as many places as possible now, then hit a facility you have the location for with a week left or so on the doomsday timer and repeat the process indefinitely.

There are so many different things to research that seem like the most important thing to get to that I had no idea I would be completely screwed if I delayed on the radio room. And now I am.

My mood isn't helped by the fact that my best Grenadier got killed in a single shot by the last enemy on the field that had 1 HP left (that blew up a car next to him) in my most recent mission, after I'd managed to get through it without taking a single point of damage.

It's going to take another 10 days to finish excavating space for the radio room with all my engineers working on it, then another (I'm guessing) 10 days to build the radio room (assuming I have the supplies), then another 3-5 days to establish contact, so I really, really hope I have time.

I'm still wearing kevlar armor because I just don't have the supplies to get anything better. I feel pretty stupid for prioritizing magnetic weapons.
