Other M was an okay game in a total vacuum - no cutscenes, pixel hunts, or comparisons to the much better gameplay of the series it claims to be a part of. Unfortunately for it, all those things do exist. :v:

I didn't mind Other M that much once I got into the mindset to enjoy the cutscenes as being 'so bad it's good' (the gameplay's genuinely pretty decent), but everything about the overall package fits as an in-universe lovely blockbuster action movie that's loosely based on a mission Samus actually did.

Dead Space 1 Clarke was definitely an ugly mofo though.

I thought I'd edited out the 'old' descriptor, but yeah, DS1 Clarke is some rando fuckin' schlub and you're never meant to see his actual face. From behind he looks like he could be in his late 50's. Which is how I took him to be because it was awesome to go through the entire game imagining him muttering "too old for this poo poo" every time he stomps a torso.

DS2 they decided to put his face in front of the camera a lot so they needed to make that face pretty.

I paid $5 for Other M and I still felt like I got ripped off. Enemies that attack from offscreen, lovely combat that has all the depth of a petri dish, and the unbelievable awkwardness of controlling a character in 3D space with a digital input is way worse than a game whose designer's reach exceeded their grasp. Metroid 2's flaws were a result of trying to accommodate the Game Boy's hardware, and would be great with a larger resolution, more tile sets, and a map. Other M's flaws are from being shittily designed.

See any FPS that has to have a mandatory crossbow weapon, or hell its good to see in 2035 a katana (loving seriously?) is a great weapon to use in a technologically advanced future. At least make it a laser katana, a laser crossbow, something that I wont find in my grandpa's basement.

But seriously, I think that style trumps substance 9 times out of 10 on this poo poo, and I can get behind any game that gives us fun poo poo to play with. Styling it after old-school weapons might be a bit awkward but, y'know, I'll take it if it means that I don't have to play another pistol-smg-assault rifle-weapons that I mostly won't use because I have the assault rifle progression chart.

I figure they're incredibly loving dangerous to use, and nobody told Gordon. I mean, it's heating metal to bright-hot levels in the open air, and none of the resistance are wearing much in the way of protective gear. Gordon, at least, is in a protective suit that's probably designed to be able to handle stuff like that sometimes.

Considering Zero Suit Samus' appearance in Smash Bros Brawl I would assume it was an ultimatum from Nintendo.

Yea when Nintendo started focusing more on Samus outside of the suit the character really took a nose dive, which is surprising for someone that never had much of a personality beyond Other M.

She had a personality. It was just understated. She gave no fucks and killed entire planets for the sake of wiping out potential biological threats. She also didn't have panic attacks when Ridley showed up.

She was a decent blank slate character earlier on, not very interesting but at least she was independent, and the fact that the character wasn't obtrusive helped the atmosphere of the prime trilogy. Then someone at nintendo thought it would be a good idea to hand metroid to Team Breast Physics.

Team Ninja handled the gameplay and nothing more, blame Sakamato for how Samus turned out.

I can't look it up right now, but I'd assume it's to match up with Zero Mission's design for her, which I think came out after Prime 1 and started the whole skintight spacesuit thing that Other M went all in on.

Yeah, as mentioned Sakamoto is entirely to blame for Other M Samus being the way she was. He actually took the reins for the game in an effort to give a big middle finger to the Prime trilogy, as it didn't fit his "vision" for Samus when he made the previous games. So he made Other M, his official new-canon backstory for Samus.

Come on, dude.

Which makes it even funnier that Rosh complains that Katarn never lets him anything important on missions. I guess he just thinks that Rosh is an incapable tool and has to do everything, but he takes a power nap during your character's missions.

Yeah, that didn't happen. He just said that Other M and the Prime series were two completely separate stories, so there wouldn't be any callbacks to it in the game.

Holy god that ending was dumb. I would have to go out of my way to find out what he was going for and I'm pretty sure I'd still hate it. When people complain about john blow i thought it was some dumb bullshit like how the internet hates anyone for any reason, but now I get it. Now to go back to when people were complaining about the ending in huge blocks of spoilers to find out if they hated it the way I hated it.

e: Weird. I thought I saw a huge brick of spoilers followed by an unspoiled reply saying "it's all a nuclear disarmament metaphor" and I didn't get that at all but I was constantly looking for signs it was true, and then the game was over and I still didn't get it, and I guess I was mistaken. I mean if a plot existed I missed it. I wanted to find those spoilers to find what the plot was. Just seemed like a pointless puzzle island with no denouement.
