Well we know the latter was happening at one point, John Brennan had a meltdown at the senate committee the other day when called on that bullshit.

I was thinking more in the context of monitoring all outgoing communications to Iran and probably most communications in and out of Iran to other countries, sure they probably did it in person somewhere but who knows. I'm hopeful they've got proof somewhere but the Iranians lie about poo poo all the time.

If someone is monitoring all Iran's foreign communications, it's almost certainly the NSA. The NSA never releases any information about intercepted communications to the public, nor would they be believed if they did.

NHTSA has ruled that the computer of a self driving car is the driver for design purposes.

What this means - a ton of regulations about vehicle design and safety are about the assumption a person is in the driving seat - headlight brightness, steering wheel placement, seat location, etc. this imposes design constraints (eg the headlights have to provide a specific degree of visibility to a given distance, this the lamps need to be a certain size and strength, which influences frontal design, which plays into things like force dissipation and aerodynamics and frame and etc)

If NHTSA had held the person inside was the driver, those constraints would still be in place, which imposes a lot of rules on the designers - basically they'd need to build 2 systems to control the car, one for people, one for the computer, and have to deal with the headache as a result (eg fitting in a lidar system as well as those headlights)

But they held that the computer is the driver, which relaxes (eg those headlights now just need to provide enough to alert other drivers that the car is oncoming) resizes (eg the headlight rule was meant to be able to detect what was so far in front of you at such amount of darkness so you could stop or swerve within X distance, now the lidar system needs to be able to do that) or removes (bye bye steering wheel) some of those constraints

Not as exciting as electoral stuff, but important going forward!

I was suspecting that Iran might start trolling the Republicans after they tried to sabotage the nuclear deal, this should be fun. :munch:

Even if that was true the federal government did not force banks to bundle all of those mortgages together and then try and sell them as a gold plated investment.

Good news! For Hillary!!!

quote:

A new report reveals that State Department investigators issued a subpoena to the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation sometime last year. Investigators are looking for foundation projects that may have also needed approval from the federal government during Hillary Clinton’s term as secretary of state, according to the Washington Post.

The subpoena also asked to see records related to Huma Abedin, Hillary’s longtime aide, who for a short time worked for both the State Department and the foundation. A foundation representative told the Washington Post that they are not the focus of the probe. The State Department’s Inspector General office declined to speak about their investigation or the subpoena.

The Community Reinvestment Act, which is the purported source of this "force," was passed in 1977. Challenge them to possibly explain a mechanism by which the CRA destroyed the housing market, which had been chugging along just fine in the intervening time, with a time lag of thirty years.

So here's a weird question I first thought about during the 2008 election of the Socialist Muslim Kenyan Devil Obama that's crossing my mind again because candidates like Trump and Clinton are so divisive and so vehemently despised by small groups without and within their parties: what the heck happens if a candidate for office is assassinated during the election? Does their running mate step in? Is there any official process for what's supposed to happen?

It's kind of an interesting scenario to consider, especially in terms of how it would affect voters and voting.

You won't be able to purchase Kanye West's newest album if Martin Shkreli has anything to say about it.

The pharmaceutical CEO, who recently made headlines after being accused of widespread securities fraud, took to Twitter on Thursday to offer the famed rapper $10 million in exchange for exclusive access to Kanye's newest album, "The Life of Pablo."

West, who is no stranger to controversy and social media himself, did not immediately reply.

The purchase may eventually prove more costly for the former hedge fund manager, as a lawsuit surfaced on Tuesday claiming that the Wu-Tang Clan album contains illustrations ripped off from a New York artist.

The pharma bad boy's E-Trade stock account — valued at $45 million — lost a whopping $41 million in value since last month, when it was used to secure a $5 million criminal release bond.

Not according to the nonpartisan government investigation:

quote:

.
In conducting our inquiry, we took a careful look at HUD’s affordable housing goals, as noted above, and the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). The CRA wasenacted in order to combat “redlining” by banks—the practice of denying credit to individuals and businesses in certain neighborhoods without regard to their creditworthiness. The CRA requires banks and savings and loans to lend, invest, and provide services to the communities from which they take deposits, consistent with bank safety and soundness.

The Commission concludes the CRA was not a significant factor in subprime lending or the crisis. Many subprime lenders were not subject to the CRA. Research indicatesonly 6% of high-cost loans—a proxy for subprime loans—had any connection to the law. Loans made by CRA-regulated lenders in the neighborhoods in which they were required to lend were half as likely to default as similar loans made in the same neighborhoods by independent mortgage originators not subject to the law.

It's also worth noting that despite the CRA, banks were continuing to redline.

quote:

Studies have shown that blacks and Latinos were twice as likely to have been affected by the housing crisis as white borrowers, largely for the reasons Bernanke outlined. Many minority borrowers were pushed into riskier, more expensive subprime loans even though they qualified for lower-interest prime mortgages. Subprime loans, which can add $100,000 to the price over the life of the mortgage, were given to 30.9 percent of Latinos and 41.5 percent of blacks, compared to just 17.8 percent of whites.
