Oh man, reading the stuff I missed while I was working was intense. Like reading the Red Wedding for the first time level intense. Glad Fry had enough sanity to stand down and not end it either with a single shot or go out firing wildly. The worst thing is every right wing keyboard warrior is going to attack themselves to this to try to prove their points about government over reach and obama = hitler and all kinds of dumb poo poo that is the reason we have people who are so divorced from reality that they are the willing to die for the idea that they can do whatever they want because of the Constitution. Lucky none of them did. Recordings and transcripts of the streams should be heard and seen by everyone, because it really shows what a bunch of selfish children they are. Their argument boiled down to "I want to be able to do anything I want and if you tell me no, you're infringing on my rights!".

This has all been handled incredibly well and I take everything back I said about the feds dragging their feet on this one. Who they got has been incredible, and they did it all without killing anyone except for Tarp Ghost's suicide by cop (~and nothing of value was lost~) I hope they pull out RICO guns on the scumbag politicians and corporate entities that have been fostering and egging on yokel haram, but even if they just smoke everyone they have in now, I'll be happy as an illegally-grazing cow.

So people keep talking about all the militia members/whatever they arrested going away for ever, but it seems like so far they've only been charged with "conspiracy to impede officers of the United States", which doesn't seem to carry a crazily steep penalty considering:quote:If two or more persons in any State, Territory, Possession, or District conspire to prevent, by force, intimidation, or threat, any person from accepting or holding any office, trust, or place of confidence under the United States, or from discharging any duties thereof, or to induce by like means any officer of the United States to leave the place, where his duties as an officer are required to be performed, or to injure him in his person or property on account of his lawful discharge of the duties of his office, or while engaged in the lawful discharge thereof, or to injure his property so as to molest, interrupt, hinder, or impede him in the discharge of his official duties, each of such persons shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six years, or both. So are they going to be dropping more charges on them? Can they, at this point? I don't know jack poo poo about law but if a bunch of them just get off with a fine that seems hosed.

Illegal guns, tax evasion, driving without plates/registration/insurance; anything and everything these idiots have done in the last thirty years that's in any way illegal will be brought against them on every applicable level. Note: good lawyers are not cheap, and I expect they will not get a spirited representation by a public defender.

Huh, I'd only seen the back angle photo, and had just assumed he was "sniping" with $3k of high-speed gear. But from this angle, looks like he has a Saiga with iron sights and some Tapco railz? PD's defend far shittier people and if they shirk their professional responsibilities it is more likely than not because of the strain on the PD system not because of politics. Anyway most likely this is going to work like any other case involving a large number of defendants, they're gonna get lower level actors to flip on the leadership in exchange for more leniency and they're probably going to give a fair amount of charges against the Bundy's and others to encourage them to take a plea bargain.

There's obviously criminal damage charges for the state of the place, then whatever they find in their homes and a general conspiracy charge if they tie them into Cliven (some of his charges open him and others up to a RICO case, at which point their whole movement is going to get ripped apart by the FBI).

Serious question: how do you defend these assholes in court? They've already proven that they don't think Constitutional law applies to them, a bunch of them are probably on the SovCit side of legal theory. What happens to them when they fire their fourth appointed public defender because he/she won't recite their magic legal spells to get them off the hook?

They can choose to defend themselves and get completely hosed but so far the Bundy's themselves have all wanted actual representation and a lot of these people, probably a majority of them, are already felons. So they prolly have a fair idea about the power of the court. Most will not really be defended in court but defended through deals with the prosecutors, though I could see whoever represents David Fry going for a competency evaluation if he's still manic. Just speculating here each of them will have their own strategies and some of these people may indeed go full gold fringe on the court but I suspect the fact that they surrendered means that most understand the gravity of the situation.
