I don't mind the relative lack of jokes as it was actually a pretty good abridging of the Vegeta vs Perfect Cell fight and we finally got the Faulconer score for Final Flash alongside OH poo poo so it's now by default the definitive version of the scene Also I'm glad even the noted dub haters TFS could appreciate how good the Super Saiyan Vegeta theme was for that scene, that's the only thing I really hoped they would take from the old US release and it worked great No Dignity fucked around with this message at 20:54 on Feb 16, 2016 |

That was a pretty good episode. The dodge joke finally paid off so good in my book. Plus Goku's face of glee when Gohan turns SSJ was great. And I do love Vegeta's SSJ Faulconer score. That was great how they edited the Final Flash. I mean the original was what? Like a half an episode for him to shoot it? Shindragon fucked around with this message at 20:57 on Feb 16, 2016 |

Their entire abridged series is kind of a love letter to it. They have strong opinions on certain things but they also have a near-encyclopedic knowledge of injokes and references to it.

I don't know if they hate the dub or not but it be awkward if they did since Christopher Sabat is right there. If they hated the dub, the voices they decide to go for wouldn't be very close to the dub themselves now would it? I mean yeah Goku is different, but Vegeta/Piccolo is pretty close. (before Kai that is)

Okay maybe hater is a strong term but I always got the impression they prefered original Japanese material than the translation, in any case I'm happy with how things panned out for this episode

Shindragon posted:If they hated the dub, the voices they decide to go for wouldn't be very close to the dub themselves now would it? It'd defeat the point of doing a parody for the purpose of entertaining English speaking Dragonball fans if they went with original voices that were entirely different for everyone. To the point of it probably dying out early if they had done so, so in that sense, whether they like the dub or not is irrelevant. They needed reasonable impersonations for the audience's sake because they're close enough that you can associate it with the real deal while it still being clearly it's own thing.

Kaiser mentions in the latest Episode Breakdown that he grew up with the Japanese version and doesn't particularly care what people like. Specifically it means that he favours the Japanese score unless there's a good reason not to.

I like the Final Flash scene because it's one of the fairly few Jobbing scenes that manages to make the character doing the jobbing feel powerful and the villain's triumph feel meaningful for at least a little bit. The Final Flash gets more buildup than almost any other attack in the entire franchise, and the follow-through looks and feels really good, and having Cell himself briefly lose his composure at the last second really helps lend it some legitimacy. I mean, it doesn't last for long because any savvy viewer knows that there's no way in hell Vegeta's winning this thing, and it should be obvious the instant they show Cell missing an arm what's going to happen, but as jobbing scenes go, they really make you believe for a second there.

I think the Final Flash scene could've been a bit longer but yeah, really like that they used the Falconer score for that one. Still refuse to believe there's a version of the show without it, really, and I already watched most of Kai. Cell's line about waiting for Goku was pretty brutal.

TheKingofSprings posted:If he doesn't use the English Gohan SSJ2 theme I riot They won't. It wouldn't even fit the series tonally. The only exceptions they've made were this episode and that one time they used the US Cell theme, and only because those are pretty much a perfect 10 in terms of being iconic for western fans. I could see them maybe letting the SSJ3 theme in too. Otherwise, don't expect any more Falconer music. On a related note, that internal monologue the dub added in for Gohan before he went SSJ2 is the dumbest poo poo ever and is one of the worst examples I've seen of the whole "don't let a single moment pass without dialogue" attitude that english dubs had back then.

There were so many great and terrible decisions made with the dub in the Cell saga. Using Vegeta's theme for the final moments of the kamehameha struggle was loving perfect and then they have to ruin it by abruptly switching to Ginyu's theme

This. We knew he would regenerate, but the attack looks powerful and Cell actually has an "oh poo poo" look for a second. It's a really great jobbing scene establishing the enemy is stronger, but not that much stronger than the others that he's insurmountable for everyone not Goku. He's more of a threat due to having the best qualities of everyone. I'm still amazed at how good some of the TFS voice actors are.

I actually like how they've established why Krillen is so terrified. He is constantly getting the poo poo kicked out of him by people stronger than him but he's terrified of Perfect Cell because he was holding back.
