Yeah, I still haven't gotten a defense mission. Closest I came was early in the playthrough, where a Hunter UFO got close and chased me around a bit, but never actually made contact.

As the game has gone on, I find the most fun from the game actually comes when missions start to go pear shaped. I had killed a bunch of enemies so far, including a set of reinforcements with prox mines, and was trying to finish off the andromodon and remaining codex. I moved up my ranger to try and get a good rapid fire shot on the andromodon, thinking that he wouldn't reveal anything that wasn't already revealed. Well, I was wrong, and he found a pack consisting of a sectopod, shield guy, and commander. At this point I'm way out of position to deal with a sectopod, with most of my activations done. This mission was actually the first time a sectopod got to shoot at me! I actually ended that mission with a lot of people rather wounded, including my grenadier who started bleeding out, but who my specialists stabalized and then revived and healed through restoration(I love that ability so much).

Nothing about this was 'fair' Bradford

After losing two squad members on the first two turns, I had to clear the rest of the mission with just three of them. I only pulled it off through dumb luck. Blew the rest of my consumables on a viper pod, leaving a sectoid and pals as the last group. I just need to rescue on more civ though and I'll be clear on the objective so- oh of course its a loving faceless.

What ensues is an idiotic chase in which my squad are running around the map taking 50% shots at ADVENT troops while someone distracts the faceless. It sort of works up until the soldier serving as bait gets disoriented by the sectoid. So now he can't outrun the faceless. To make matters worse, the sectoid crits one of my other soldiers on the next turn and kills her so now I'm down to two units, one of which is about the get sandwiched between a faceless and a zombie.

Faceless shambles up to him. Misses. Zombie trundles up. Misses.

So that absurd luck saved the mission and possibly my whole campaign. Sectoid gets flanked, and then I have to spend about 10 turns kiting the last two faceless so they don't get any hits in. Takes forever, but I won dammit.

Now to make another dumb mistake and lose the campaign anyways.

Well, finally took Jack out on a mission. It's a retaliation mission. Her first action in the field: Null Lance on a Berserker, an ADVENT Shieldbearer... and apparently a civilian. Oops. :sweatdrop:

If you're curious, Firaxis explained the Caps Lock thing:

quote:

Hitting the key, through a rube-goldberg-esque series of events, forces all outstanding load requests to be filled immediately in a single frame. This causes a massive hitch, and potentially could crash the game. If you don't care about those adverse effects the synchronous load is faster.

How would that work - would it just max out the meter and so doing a facility raid or plot mission would bring it back down automatically? Because I don't want to be forced to do a bunch of plot missions in a row since people would probably get hurt and I'd be bringing out the B team.

I've never had a single problem with the caps lock trick as long as I waited for 5-10 seconds after getting to the post-mission Skyranger scene. The one time I tried hitting it immediately, the hitch was substantially longer and included some audio weirdness, and then the game went back to the camera zoom in and out in the troop bay for what at least felt like a much longer loading period than usual.

Also, I haven't really had problems with running the game, or with graphics. There's some graphical stutter in the Avenger sometimes, but it's less irritating than most of what I've heard mentioned here. It's nice to be one of the lucky ones for a change!

What I can't comprehend though is that... This is just as lovely as the previous game was at launch, but it doesn't look any better and it isn't a radical departure from it mechanically, so how'd they manage to gently caress it up this bad? Iiirc they eventually did fix up the first game so it was pretty stable and ran OK, so after unfucking the first game they went on to re-gently caress the codez they recycled for the second game, and now they are back to unfucking it all?

If video games were really all just about taking the previous game and building on top of it, we wouldn't be seeing any issues. The thing is that this is technically an entirely new game built from the ground up, evident in how a lot of minute details are different, such as line of sight, or more overt ones, such as the graphical department progressing slightly to stay as good as "you remember it". If you compare XCOM2012 to XCOM2016, you'll see that are visually distinct.

Otherwise, QA would have a really easy time testing bugs only from previous generation.

That said, it has shipped a tiny bit buggier than last release, but it's still fairly acceptable.

Good tips for retaliation missions?

My tactics on legendary are thus;

1st battle scan the biggest building or concentration of civs you can find, blue move and o/watch the faceless, keep conceal at all costs with your ranger so he can be saving civs constantly.

2nd find and work towards high ground - preferably a building not close to the map edge and make a deathtrap position for the rest of your squad, while continuing to scan for your ranger.

About your 3rd or 4th mission you might get berserkers which you need to flashbang and then kill all of his friends before you kill him - he is just a bullet sponge (you will most likely need all your squad taking a turn to concentrate it down) that can't do anything flashed but his buddies will ruin your day and need to die before you focus the berserker down.

Chrysallid missions are the real step up in difficulty but only because of how painful the mechanics are, you need to scan everywhere before moving out at all and when you move it needs to be blue move overwatches, your ranger cannot play conceal hero as 'lids will laugh at your disguise (they smell fear).

I have no idea how it works yet so if anyone knows please feel free to chip in- but pods of lids seem to act pretty standard and will rush up to you as per a normal pod but the solo lids that burrow will double move poison you on activation. I guess the pods might work the same but i got lucky by being so cautious.

Worth noting scans will scan through walls or anything just like flashbangs.

Jeeez, had an Avenger defense mission after barely researching 2nd tier armour, still on ballistics and a small injured pool of soldiers. Felt lucky to bug out with only two deaths. Highlight was a rookie panicking and grenading the high cover barricade on the Avenger's ramp.

That said, as someone posted earlier, this game really shines when things go pearshaped and you're having to think on your feet. Enjoyed the scenario in the end, despite thinking 'how the gently caress am I getting out of this one' at first.

Good luck with your depression!
Just had the most insane bug in the history of my xcom games so far. I'm doing the forge mission and I'm at the very end picking up the objective. The only enemy left on the map is a single sectopod out back. I have a save right before I engage the Sectopod, plus some autosaves before that. The bug follows as such:

1. I hack the Sectopod to disable it
2. During the disable animation around half the remaining walls in the forge just blow apart
3. Immediately after that my most injured squadmember dies, just keels over dead no matter where he is on the map
4. The entire rest of the squad panics, does random poo poo
5. Immediately after that control finally returns to me and the game CTDs itself

This baffling and remarkable series of events is perfectly repeatable (even across the multiple saves), I've done it 3 times. Anyone else seen anything like this?

How is the specialists other final ability? Capacitor discharge? I took it over restoration, since I find healing useless with the relatively short mission timers, but it seems pretty underwhelming so far. I've only used it twice so far, but it seems to hit for 5 damage and applies disorientation to robots.

It's loving awesome, basically an EMP bomb that also does grenade-level damage to organics. The damage goes up when you upgrade Gremlins and bypasses armor.

had the best bug last night, apparently the AI poo poo itself on the combat maps after I savescummed-loaded one too many times, and started off every single one of their turns standing on their starting points and doing nothing. Took advantage of this, refused to load anything at all (in case it rolled back to regular settings) and proceeded to avert defeat by doom meter twice. By the skin of my teeth (AI was perfectly fine on the geoscape, meaning that the dark events went and happened when they should, doom meter advanced, etc, etc). Only turned the game off after I made sure I turned back the tide against me.

Seriously though, I prefer the armour over the weapons, I can still use explosives to knock things down, I get to use more of them as I don't have to swap out grenades for battle scanners and it means I don't get hosed quite so hard if I make a dumb move/make a series of 80% misses.

Yeah, it's good. I've had situations where the one two punch of a proximity mine and capacitor discharge has completely wiped a pod before it could do literally anything.

I discovered last night that Fan Fire plus Blue Screen Rounds can basically one shot Sectopods.

I was having a really great run in EW last night. It ended in disaster when my max level sniper took a bullshit hit that hit critically and started him bleeding out. I got my support to him to stabilize the poor dude, but the game wouldn't let me stabilize him. There were no enemies in sight, I still had 2/3 uses of the medkit remaining too.

I trudged on to the next mission and after the first turn ended a cyberdisk emerged and one shot the medic who tried to save his sniper buddy in the previous mission. I alt f4'd so hard. I'm not on iron man and have a save before the mission where my sniper died, but goddamnit that was a waste of my time. That not being able to stabilize thing was a bug and not a misunderstanding of game mechanics, right?

I was actually kind of excited about him taking such a hit because I was going to send him to be augmented in the lab to cut down a 15+ day recovery period to just three days. But instead my support stood around for two turns with his buddy watching him die. :(
