Coca Koala posted:Toxicity in esports is something that companies like Valve and Riot take pretty seriously, because if you can't log into a game without a thirteen year old calling you a loving human being constantly, you're not going to play the game and if you don't play the game, then Valve and Riot don't make any money. It's easy to ban the 13 year old for being an abusive prick, but now you have a situation where you have high profile, extremely visible players playing the game in what is essentially a massive advertising campaign for the game, right? And if the 13 year old sees this pro player saying something nasty to another pro player and nothing happens, then he's going to start making a bunch of noise about how "Well, why did I get banned when these guys can say what they want, and nothing happens?" People also neglect to think about how a team would handle a player mic'd up for 10 minutes verbally harassing a teammate or other player. They would probably get in trouble, at least forced to make an apology by the team. Teams don't like to look like they're full of dickheads. It's bad publicity. Players get fined for writing bad poo poo on their eyeblack and not saying a word to other players. Also in real sports if you trash talk too much one of two things happen. The refs/umps will get involved or the other team is going to physically assault you during play. Get ready to get checked/beaned/head hit/have your knee taken out/fouled.

Pigsfeet on Rye posted:Jack Whittaker's story on his lottery win and the destruction that it caused is a real sad tale, true schadenfreude for us all. drat that's sad. I feel bad for the guy. This bit annoyed me though- quote:“Today is my birthday—I’m 65 years old,” he said, and then explained his policy of not giving interviews, except for money. I suggested that he’d been through experiences that no sane man would want to go through, that others might benefit from being able to understand, and that was why he should speak to me for free. I told him that his story was an American story, about the belief in luck and the damage people can do while meaning to do good. I'M SPESHAL!

He is a kind of confidence man, preying on people's vanity, ignorance or loneliness, gaining their trust and betraying them without remorse. Like the credulous widow who wakes up one day to find the charming young man and all her savings gone, so the consenting subject of a piece of nonfiction learns—when the article or book appears—his hard lesson. Journalists justify their treachery in various ways according to their temperaments. The more pompous talk about freedom of speech and "the public's right to know"; the least talented talk about Art; the seemliest murmur about earning a living."

Magres posted:Also happiness doesn't correlate that strongly with more money after a certain point - I remember reading that making more than ~70k a year doesn't generally make people much happier, but happiness correlates pretty strongly with income up to 70k. Money-to-happiness is a flawed metric though, unless you are in an extremely precarious situation, you don't think in terms of actual dollars, but in terms of what your spending power allows or doesn't. I had classes that actually advocated that annual raises of more than cost-of-living increases was a waste from an employee satisfaction point of view, and instead you should blow money on bullshit like high-value coffee machines and guest speakers. This was based on questionable studies that point blank asked people if they'd be more motivated in getting a 4% instead of a 3% raise, without properly framing it. Unless you're having serious financial issues, things motivate you much more than money. Buying a thing, doing a thing, etc. Taking all of 30 seconds to talk to employees about what the extra spending power from a raise during your quarterly/annual review will make them leave the meeting thinking about their projects instead of "geez, I get 30$ more on my paycheck, whoopityfuckingdo". It's true that there's an upper limit, but it scales way past 70k if you frame it properly.

It's not that money is not useful past a certain point, but that the returns are diminishing. Ask a guy making $30k a year whether he wants a $250 bonus or two extra vacation days, and ask a guy earning $300k whether he wants a $2,500 bonus or two extra vacation days. First guy probably takes the cash, and the second guy takes the time off.
