I'm not sure why you think helmet laws are punitive for a perceived crime? There is a question about whether or not it is better to have them (better safety) or not have them (more cyclists) but I see them as fundamentally analogous to car seatbelts rather than dole bludger investigations and torturing refugees.

Important question, why don't buses have seatbelts? I always feel really uncomfortable on a bus without a seatbelt on. Perhaps a similar exception can be made for ride share bikes?

Looks like Pell is going to have to face abuse survivors in Rome during the commission link at least

vatican scum daily posted:

Cardinal George Pell: Child abuse royal commission trying to find location for survivors to hear testimony

The child abuse royal commission has announced it is trying to find a suitable location in Rome to allow abuse survivors to be present when Cardinal George Pell gives evidence next week.

A group of survivors has been pushing to be allowed to hear Cardinal Pell's evidence in person, after he was given permission to give evidence via video link from Rome due to ill health.

Commissioner Justice Peter McClellan told the third public hearing sitting in Ballarat it was a "reasonable" request.

He told the inquiry a suitable hotel room in central Rome had been located and tests would be carried out to ensure the hearing could be video linked back to Sydney.

He added if that room was not suitable, another location would be found.

A crowd-funding campaign has raised $204,000 to send a group of abuse survivors to Rome.

The group of 15, made up of 10 survivors and five support staff, will leave for Rome on Friday.

Because the purpose of the laws is different to the stated purpose. Bike helmets aren't mandated to prevent head injuries anymore than detention is mandated to protect refugees. Helmets are mandated to reduce the number of cyclists, detention is mandated to reduce the number of refugees trying to come here.

It would be nice to think that these laws are created based on an even handed weighing of the evidence for and against, but they're not. The decision is made and the justifications come later.

I don't disagree with you regarding refugees, but that's a pretty strong assertion regarding bicycle helmets that I'd like to hear some arguments/see some evidence for given this took place from 1988-1992, which is a tiny bit outside my sphere of political awareness.

He doesn't have any, he's trying to muddy the waters and conflate distinct issues because the government is trying to prevent him breaking the law and endangering himself and others by stopping him from doing something he shouldn't be doing anyway - speeding.

The government isn't doing that and as far as I'm aware hasn't proposed doing that? I'm arguing that if the government were to do that it wouldn't be because of any kind of deep affinity for those who are affected by speeding, but to appease people who feel better knowing that people they don't like, in this case 'hoons', are being hassled.

Seatbelts are required on all but metro buses.

quote:

Australian Design Rule 68
• Developed in 1990 as a result of the
Australian crash investigations and lab
testing
• Requires three point seat belts mounted on
seats (not bus frame).
• Applies to all Australian buses built from July
1994 (metro buses are exempt)

But clearly they just came up with that over a beer one lunchtime and decided authoritarians needed a fillip.

Western Australian buses are not good at following that rule in the entire time I was using them heavily.

Unless the definition of metro stretches 20+km from the city and into the suburbs...

They all seem to be firmly on the right side of the Dulux colour chart.

Metro means a bus in a city. You can travel over 100km (and maybe? 100kph) on a metro bus in Sydney or Melbourne.

Most people have the capability to punch someone in the back of the head after drinking a skin full but they dont, but we're all being told to go home early because of that.

Most people have the ability to go faster than the posted speed limit but hey guess what, the vast majority of motorists dont and even of the portion that do, an even smaller portion result in injuries or death.

Lockout laws arent designed to keep people safe, they are designed to funnel people into a casino, just like speeding fines and no helmet fines are designed to make people happy that other people they dont like are getting in trouble (and the government is making money off it).

We are a nation of whingers. we dont want other people doing/having/getting anything we dont do/have/get. If they do, we want them punished.

Also BB if you agree with GPS speed governing you better also agree with GPS tracking because loving lmao if you think that isnt going to be the primary use of such a system.

Research has shown that seatbelts don't make buses that much safer. Between the higher position of seats, reduced amount of travel space between one seat and the next, and a heavier mass, the chance of injury is a lot lower.
