The KB is faster than your battleships, so generally what happens if you try and sortie your surviving battlewagons on the 8th to catch the KB is that even if they intercept the KB, the KB can then disengage and then sink your battleships with airstrikes during the air phase. If you sortie all your cruisers instead, the KB's battleships will eat them alive.

I've experimented with this a bit, and while I've managed to sink a few carriers, that is definitely not the most likely outcome. 75% of the time you'll just lose more ships with no return.

This is what I suspected would be the outcome.

General WiTP commentary (with the understanding that it's a game and not a real simulation):

I have to admit that I have only once, since 2011, ever gotten very far into 1943, and I have noticed that American carriers are significantly underpowered versus their counterparts in the first year of the war.

You've really got to wait until you have parity and the org penalty changes to really stand a chance in an even carrier battle as the Allies.

Yet, in real life the "turning point" of the Pacific war was June 3-7 1942 at Midway, during which the Japanese carrier force was soundly trounced.

A similar carrier battle in WiTP, at the same time, would be suicidal for an Allied player.

It's also worth noting that the Dutch navy is far superior in game than they were in the real world, and so are surface elements in general.

As an Allied player you can really make the Japanese pay for invasions, at least against the AI, with huge numbers of merchants with the cost of a few CLs. Sometimes a couple CLs can stop an entire landing.

A large part of the carrier issue is due to the concentration of force the game creates because players have the benefit of hindsight and logistics are a lot simpler, you would basically never see an IJN player splitting the KB into divisions like they did IRL. The only CV based disadvantages the allied player suffers are the 7 hex (rather than 8) strike limit and the (minor) penalties based on the number of planes in a TF (which the IJN also suffers from, it just has bigger max numbers available at the start). You can easily just have multiple CV TF's and mass them all in the same hex the same as the IJN player does.

What the game doesnt really model is how disorganised IJN carrier operations could be, they use the same routines as the allies which does actually place them somewhat above where they were historically and lets them leverage their superior numbers to win CV v CV battles. That said the KB vs the USN fleet carriers in late '42 is by no means the sure thing you seem to think it is, IJN CV's are ridiculously fragile, most of the plane/pilot quality disparity is eliminated and often that sort of engagment will come down to the exact tactical factors of the situation. I have won full on carrier engagements as the Allies in August '42 and it's even easier if you bushwack the KB trying to cover an invasion or near an allied base (like Midway was).

Does anyone know what it takes to get a captured overseas factory working? Do I need to connect it to rails and/or a port that leads back to my home territory as I just got a port up and running this turn but the factory i (captured last turn)s not working (it has slight damage, does it need to be 100%?) while the oil is.

Is there really anything that WITP needs fixing? Besides some of the RNG weirdness and everybody is incompetent at contact reports (all information is unreliable).

Reading AARs leads me to believe that the game breaks in super large air battles (e.g. 200 cap not shooting any bombers that have 100 escorts).

Unless they already have, that should be fixed. The ground war is, frankly speaking, terrible. It needs at least a "reworked" interface.

Then there are a whole lot of quality of life things, like:

1. Make the convoy system better.
2. Different map modes.
3. I want a real historical Japanese submarine doctrine option.
4. Give the allies more production flexibility
5. Allow players to give specific arrival/engagement instructions to TFs (like leave port at night, arrive at night, attack at night)
6. Better resources/industry/convoy/TF tracking tools
7. More Orphan Anna
8. For a game, it works, but I'd like to see more realistic surface engagements with elements at different ranges.

For example, I find it hard to believe that battleships would intentionally close to 2k yards with anything by their own accord, whereas they might send their destroyers to close to 2k yards while they stayed a comfortable distance.

Also, it's pretty impossible that destroyers would be shooting their 5 inch guns and raining down accurate death from its absolute maximum range (16k).

There are other things more experienced players could probably point out.

Edit

Maybe you're right about the Japanese carriers, like I said, I rarely get that deep into 1942 (I know).

That said, I think even if your point is valid, it is super important to have parity, at least, in carriers. So if the IJN player bunches their carriers together too, it makes pulling off 2nd half carrier battle victories much less likely in 1942 than reality.

Then again, I'm basing 90% of this statement on AARs.

Is Pike & Shot worth it? It's been on my wishlist for awhile but I've always been put off by the dumbass 13%.

It looks like some of the prices haven't yet been actually updated though. Command for 50% off is a great deal though. WITE is also down to a fairly reasonable price too.

I think it's the other way around - Caen is latest in the series. It's still shoehorned into the old engine though so there's not much of a difference. The full 3D Unity version of CC 'The Big Red One' was scheduled for a 2015 release (which will probably be 2017).
