My knowledge of economics isn't the best, but for projects like this don't you get a considerable 'discount' (i'm sure this is the wrong word) when you build them in your own country, because a lot of the money spent will flow back to the government? And it stimulates the economy.

Is there somewhere that details exactly how much will be spent on defense over the next x years? I know it's currently around $32bn a year at the moment but I'd like a resource that maps it out a bit if possible.

Investing in property is popular currently , in my understanding, because of its security and the allowances and offsets provided to the investor. Overall though it seems that it has a higher negative impact on people who are not investing in housing and especially those who don't already own a home, by artificially inflating housing prices. Is this unique to investing in properties, or are there negative societal effects associated with all types of investments? For example, if the investor, or even many investors, dropped the same amount on bonds or shares it would have little impact, that I'm aware of, on pretty much anything right?

You're right - high investment in a particular share or bond would drive it's price up but that would only affect other investors and the stock market, not prevent people from getting a roof over their heads because fucko needs a 6th loss-driven investment in their portfolio.

It's popular because in theory it offers a higher rate of return for a lower perceived risk than other investments.Of course a lot of this is based on the assumption that prices will keep going up up up because much of the payoff comes in the form of the capital gains discount when you eventually sell your house.

I don't think you'd get negative impacts on society if share were heavily invested in unless they were overvalued and it lead to a bubble. I wonder if driving money out of investment housing might be a great idea because it would result in a lot more money floating around looking for a place to go, which might result in start-ups and established companies having an easier time raising capital for expansion leading to... jobs and growth. Of course a lot of the 'wealth' tied up in housing is probably on paper only and could vanish overnight (e.g. a house is only worth a $million if someone is willing to pay that much for it) if the housing bubble bursts so maybe there won't be as much movement from housing into other investments.

They play the definitions game every time. The RAN won't intercept in Indonesian waters so people who drown there don't count. Also, when everyone's dead, there's no real way to know for sure they were trying to reach Australia :spergin:

And given that Labor has just as much blood on their hands, they'll never call out the LNP over the matter.
