All of the Chris Carter episodes feel like first drafts. Like they were half-assed assignments written the night before they were due. I'm just completely bewildered by this final episode and I'm not sure I want more if he's still going to be in charge.

Yeah, a lot of military and "essential" government types got smallpox vax in the early 2000s. It's plausible that someone who thought they might be rolling up to a biological warfare lab without knowing it (such as an FBI agent who worked counter-terror) would get poked as an insurance policy but I don't know if it's available anymore outside of somewhere like Ft. Detrick.

This guy always wrote as he went back in the old series and it ultimately caught up with him when the mythos crashed and burned. But does he actually plan something out this time, especially for a super short 6 episode long mini-series? Nope- if it aint broke dont fix it. I guess people will watch either way- I know I will, but I don't have to sit here and enjoy all of his poorly written, racist, cliched garbage.

I think this episode would have been a lot better if they had used the phrase "alien DNA" a lot less and made it two hours: it would given them time for Mulder to have an actual plot and the pandemic to actually start spreading.

An episode about the fbi hypnotizing people into terrorists that they then arrest to look good would have been a good episode Or maybe Mulder thinks it's hypnosis but turns out they just trick them the normal way

The original mytharc was acceptable enough, but after the syndicate was destroyed they tried to keep it going by heaping piles of more poo poo on top. Said poo poo was bad.

The mytharc episodes didn't suffer a collapse late in the series; almost every single one, throughout the series' history, was aimless and opaque. They certainly didn't tell interesting stories individually, and collectively they didn't add up satisfactorily either. I don't know how people can look at the black oil's concept changing every time it appeared and think "Oh yeah everything was coherent and fine until the super-soldiers".

The overarching story that this Syndicate has been secretly working with alien colonists to bring about an invasion, but is really just stalling for time so that they can figure out how to beat them, is fairly coherent. When you start getting into any level of detail beyond that it falls apart.

In my opinion the way the old mytharc episodes worked was that they would save up some money and temporarily converted the x-files into a hollywood thriller movie instead of an episodic TV procedural. Lots more stunts, shootings, explosions, etc. It was a fun change of pace and they were often pretty well shot and directed, especially by the stnadards of 90s TV. It's obvious the black oil started out as one thing and became another, though. Originally it's oil because some evil alien presence jumped from a crashed spaceship into a submarine and possessed the motor oil inside. But the oil itself is just ordinary motor oil. There's some other evil spirit thing that lets it get into sealed diving suits and stuff. But then in later episodes they're finding motor oil inside meteorites or some poo poo. The overall idea that the greys are actually just possessed bodies or even fake bodies for some sort of ancient creeping evil spirit was good but afterwards it started getting more confusing

When I saw the first seasons, the conspiracies they involved was something that was barely mentioned over here, and the idea that it was any serious following of this was silly to me. But after seeing the new season, with the advent of the Internet, I can't help but feel it's loving stupid that they give so much credence to conspiracies that I actually know some people are dumb enough to follow, and I can't help wonder if I would hated the old X Files if it had been made today. At the same time, in the old series the conspiracies were covert while in the new season it's all out in the open, which ruins the idea of any masquerade, so it may just be that the old series was about things that goes bang in the night, while the new show is just a straight alien/conspiracy invasion, so it's the genre shift is annoying me. At least Carter did not make an episode about school shootings being false flag operations to ban guns.

Oh man, this thread doesn't look so good. My professional opinion after just glancing at it is that the only thing that can possibly save it is STEM CELLS with ALIEN DNA. But where can we find those? Look, aliens. *fade to black* Apart from this and some filler like the first attempt to get Scully's ALIEN DNA, I really liked the episode. Hope they get another season, because lol if that's how the show ends.
