Honestly, they kind of had to have it happen given how Arkham City and HQR went, especially since Scarecrow is the main villain. But we can discuss actual execution of his appearance as we go along.

I don't really hate the concept of the Joker showing up in a few fear gas sections or whatever, it just feels so obvious it's kind of coming off as lazy to me, really. It would have been much cooler to just do a Batman story where Joker doesn't come up, or at least hold off a little longer before pulling this. Build Scarecrow up as the real main player here, establish what other villains are doing to back him, have some more setup with what's going on with the Knight, and then maybe throw in a little Joker at a big act two climax to really mess with Batman's head. Especially coming off of Origins as well, where Joker got a stranglehold on the plot that really outstayed its welcome and shoved other characters and plotlines aside, this just feels way too early to be shoving him in again. I knew he was coming, but it happening so early is what I find disappointing. You're right though, just because it's the obvious setup it doesn't make it terrible. Though I suspect the game may very well still manage to make it terrible, we shall have to see. Though to be fair, the 'blast radius increased by one thousand percent' fear gas lead in was pretty subtle and clever, coming from this game. The long drawn out sequence where you're forced to go slow and Alfred is pleading for you to get out while sad music plays was a little forced though.

I'm going to just kind of hope against hope here that Barbara has NOT been kidnapped, but rather Scarecrow was taking advantage of the fear gas to gently caress with Batman by saying that someone will die.

'sup Joker fear gas hallucination, how is it going? On one hand, I like this sequence, until now. Bat's worst fears? Barbara getting kidnapped and Alfred telling him to abandon Gotham and save his skin. On the other hand, Bats fearing the Joker? Every single time he was exposed to the toxin in Asylum he fought it off, to the point Scarecrow was actually scared. Bats doesn't fear villains, that's like half the point of Batman.

Oh boy Joker's here! We're going this direction huh? Interesting. Well, can't wait till Talia shows up and forces him to confront how he failed to save her from his most well-known villain and how he should've been so much better than this.

This game's animation is almost unnervingly smooth. It makes watching Scruffy beat up thugs a delight though. And now we have to worry about the Terrans from trying to kill batman.

It is worth noting, now that we've seen him, yes, Mark Hammil does voice the Joker in this as opposed to Origins' Troy Baker. While Baker did an excellent job at voicing him in Origins (we've all discussed the Joker problems that game had to death), Hammil is really the one and only. Personally, I like what they do with Joker in this one. It will be explained why, but he's handled much better than Origins Joker and in my opinion, better than Arkham City Joker. Please note that the above opinions are coming from someone who hasn't played more than maybe a third of the game total.

Okay - just dropping Scarecrow on the ground and turning your back on him to check up on Barbara - that was stupid, Bats. You could've at least held him on the ground with your boot or something! ... Also, is it just me, or is the new cowl a liiitle bit too tight? Batman's face seem to bulge forward in rather uncomfortable way.

anilEhilated posted:I thought so too, but this game actually mostly uses him pretty well (unlike Origins where he pretty much destroys the story). I think that's because whoever wrote Origin's Joker fundamentally misunderstood the way the joker worked in The Dark Knight. Ledger's joker really didn't care about Batman specifically, he wanted to prove that everyone was scum, that deep down everyone was corruptable, and if he managed to bring Batman down to his level it would plunge Gotham into chaos. You got a sense that the Joker existed prior to Batman and would have gone on doing poo poo after him. But Origin's Joker seemed to congeal fully formed around one idea "I will get Batman to kill someone." and then forced the plot to also revolve around that point.
