I teach millenials and something really bothers me about the fact that they have phones but so many of them have no idea how to actually use them minus games, phone, texting, YouTube and looking for porn in their browser. They think I'm weird because I stream most of my music now even though I have 100gb of stuff. They, on the other hand, use their phones like an iPod twelve years ago and listen to the same 23 lovely 128kbps songs over and over. My favorite example was one kid who was talking to me about music and was talking about finding music similar to one band he likes. I suggested watching the band he likes on YouTube, watching suggested songs based on that and using videograbby.com. Also told him to set up a Pandora/Spotify/Milk station based on that artist and maybe it would play some similar stuff he would like . He looked at me like I said I was going to gently caress his dog and asked me about torrent sites. Kirk Vikernes fucked around with this message at 02:58 on Mar 5, 2016 |

So instead of encouraging problem solving skills, you just told him what to do, and are surprised when your students only know how to do things they are told instead of solving problems? Great teaching buddy.

Perhaps we can also say millennials can't cook a good burger, damned millennials. Hell I bet they can't even poop the correct way

In my experience Millennials are the complete opposite from what teacher goon said. The people I'm around all day would commit suicide without access to Spotify and Pandora, while I'm the one playing the same (slammin, not lovely) mp3s over and over and/or listening to FM radio. Streaming has become so prolific and easy nobody knows what torrents are anymore and they don't download poo poo, if it's not on iTunes or Netflix it may as well not exist. When I tell people I download some series or nerd out about my Plex local media setup or something they look at me like I'm some meth dealing pirate. Hell just today I was trying to tell someone how Adblock can block youtube ads and they were legitimately concerned they'd get in trouble and said "I'll deal with the ads it's not worth the trouble to me." That guy does sort of touch on a point. ~10+ years ago computers and other devices like them required you to learn something to be able to use them, and what you learned trying to play or consume media or whatever overlapped with what you would have to learn to do something useful on the thing. If you wanted to play an online game in the early 90's you had to teach yourself some networking. Now theres technology for consuming and technology for producing and poor kids only know how to use the consumer focused tech making them in some ways more technologically illiterate to the poor people slightly older than them This is all job security to me so i dont mind

i have only the most basic idea of how a television works, well a CRT tv, nothing about an LCD. i have basically no clue about how a car works, except for what internal combustion is and an idea of the general principle of how the fuel is injected into the cylinders, explodes, and drives the pistons, which transfer their mechanical work into the drive train and thence into the wheels. but all the details are lost on me.

I guess what im getting at is if you were in the 1920s and had a car you would know those details because you would have to just to operate the thing. Same with computers, except knowing the details of how computers work is a very in demand job skill
