"vanilla" VB was always a nightmare, I can't imagine how bad it got turned into if Radium re-wrote huge parts of it.

Remember when Jeff Atwood wanted to move the forums to discourse?

It all sounds more and more like radium was just an elevator technician who fell into the job of fixing SA by accident.

I wonder if radium was just kind of learning things as he went which led to his awful coding practices, or if he had previous experience doing the sort of work he was doing for SA while at Gamespy (but since nobody except a select group of computer shamans knew anything about coding, he got away with godawful coding practices)

Franken-VB doesn't even matter, these forums are a product of their evolution. Forum software is pretty basic(and not that complicated really), you're never going to find something new that covers 100% of the current feature set. SomethingAwful is a mature(haha) product with it's own unique features and requirements, you're going to be writing large sections of code any way you slice it. Switching to something else is tantamount to a rewrite. Starting with the schema, you'd have to make the decision to either migrate the schema over to a new one(which means you need approximately twice the amount of disk space you currently use) or rewrite and adapt large sections of the new code to the old schema. From there, it just snowballs into a hell project just to get back to where you were when you started.

It's much better and more pragmatic to take the path ZDR is taking of slowly moving things over to better systems over time.

fyi lowtax you don't ask a coder to estimate when they'll finish "everything" especially a coder like radium who excelled at coming up with new ideas beyond what he could do. defining what to deliver (even in high-level terms) when always comes before defining when

Well I did write design docs and gave them to him, the problem was he wouldn't necessarily follow them and would arbitrarily decide that something couldn't be done for some reason, and wouldn't inform me of it.

This guy is right. Moment coding means you just have to get it up and then hopefully never have to deal with it except in the case of security.

I am pretty sure that I can still negotiate back to sslv2 or tls 1.1 (which has some ssl in it since it was a transitional implementation) and the server will still be okay

I've seen a server still running Windows 95 because it worked. It was built to ruin the LCD screen but still network accessible. Clients said it was on an entirely internal network but there was an ethernet jack behind a bench next to it that allow a person onto the network.

What I am saying is usually when you see one significant problem with anything related to the system (code, hardware, software) there are probably many other things wrong.

I found something wrong concerning the forum and waiting for a response from lowtax about it.

The best of cargo cult devops.

You nailed it:

"Cargo cult programming is a style of computer programming characterized by the ritual inclusion of code or program structures that serve no real purpose. Cargo cult programming is typically symptomatic of a programmer not understanding either a bug they were attempting to solve or the apparent solution (compare shotgun debugging, deep magic).[1] The term cargo cult programmer may apply when an unskilled or novice computer programmer (or one inexperienced with the problem at hand) copies some program code from one place to another with little or no understanding of how it works or whether it is required in its new position.

Cargo cult programming can also refer to the results of applying a design pattern or coding style blindly without understanding the reasons behind that design principle. Examples are adding unnecessary comments to self-explanatory code, adding deletion code for objects that garbage collection would have collected automatically, and creating factories to build simple objects."

People saying things like this are naive as gently caress and you've probably never run into anything like this in your work history. I've seen this kind of empire building many times and there's nothing innocent about what went on in the chatlogs Lowtax has been posting.
