This description is probably overused at this point but Trails in the Sky is very much a slow burn. It doesn't so much "get good" suddenly as it just spends a lot of time with world building.

That said I liked the battle system and it was nice having some genuinely difficult boss fights in a JRPG for a change.

The bosses (save for that optional one towards the end, which was just frustrating for me because I've always hated "winnable unwinnable battles") never seemed that tough, it always felt like it came down to how well you planned out your materia quartz loadouts. Speed and fastcharge were king, and abusing CP charge was a close second.

SC has some pretty tough ones is mostly what I was thinking of, especially a few of the Enforcers.

This is why you keep the Information quartz on and never take it off: it tells you that fight's gimmick (and a lot of others). Those worms only use the earthquake attack if they've been damaged, so you have to avoid using AoEs and kill them one at a time to minimize it. :eng101:

Nah, SMT4 is pretty darn easy. The first bit is the toughest you'll encounter, so don't be afraid to play it nice and slow and grind a bit when the game really lets you start doing stuff. It gets easier all the way to the end.

DDS1 and DDS2 will gnaw your balls off, but they are absolutely worth your time. Grinding is your friend in both, though, as you'll NEED to maxmize your exp gains in DDS2 to keep up with the power curve of the bosses, and there are so many mantras and so many skills to learn, depending on your play style, you will come to learn to love the enemy spawn increase items.

EDIT: Oh, and it goes without saying, but eat everybody.

lets hang out

I remember feeling like a total idiot when I read that after I had already beaten that fight by spamming AoE, but then I also felt like a total badass for beating it that way

Still trying to power through PS1 but wowza is the encounter rate in this game out of control. Glad I played it emulated so I can just turbo the poo poo out of random battles, but man on the overworld it's sometimes as bad as every 3-4 steps you take. Luckily dungeons aren't real big and the counter rate seems a fair bit lower in them generally.

Need to look at if PCSX2 can let me poke through memory and make a cheat to lower the encounter rate ... a lot.

Meanwhile...

I just love the fact they introduce you to him as "Rude Hero".
And man that picture just reminded me of something. Way back in 2001, there was some TV channel that just put up constant footage of trailers and gameplay featurettes. One of them was the intro to Shadow Hearts up until the forced loss against the boss. I forgot the name of the game for the next 9 years but I remember being so impressed by it back then.
It's weird to think Midway did publishing work on a JRPG too.

EO4 is the most beginner friendly, since it's by far the hardest to mess up and have a "bad party."

Man, the encounter rate in Breath of Fire III is insanely high. Really wish it had a map too with such an encounter rate so when I try to explore I at least know where I'm going and/or where I've been. Game otherwise seems fine/fun so far.

I don't remember it being so bad. My only negative memory of BoF3 was that one sequence where you had to train the guy. I hated that as a kid.

Yes, it is really high. Game seems alright, fun, nothing special though. I'm playing it for the first time. I'm taking a break from Lufia 2 to play this because a friend wanted me to play it. Unfortunately I think I might have a better opinion of BOF3 if I hadn't been playing Lufia 2. That's a bit of a step down.

I just finished the laboratory. God that sucked. Puzzle dungeons should be a thing in games with random battles. If a game has random battles and wants to have puzzle dungeons, the battles should be turned off like in FFX's cloister trials.

Invisible Inc is probably just your speed. Divinity: Original Sin is probably one of the best recent turn based CRPG out right now though. Shadowrun Dragonfall and Hong Kong are also great.

Nah, it had a physical edition since it ranked in sales charts. Although it may have been limited. Digital only in Japan is essentially suicide.
Digital is almost the majority of sales in the west these days so it makes sense. Since it's a Steam release I don't mind either but I figure some people would rather have a nice box.
